Odontoid fracture in severe ankylosing spondylitic patient
Patients with AS, who present in the emergency room with severe pain in the cervical region after a fall present a challenge for the Orthopaedic surgeon. A careful neurologic examination and computed tomography should be done, with a high index of suspicion of a fracture at any level of the cervical spine. External immobilization with a plaster of paris may be reasonable approach in patients with severe AS, as such patients pose high surgical risk. Conflict of interest: None. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
