It was evaluated the effects of using milk protein or supplemental zinc in the diet on performance, relative weights of small intestine and liver, intestine morphology and IGF-I (insulin-like growth factor) serum concentrations, growth hormone and zinc in piglets. The experiment lasted 14 days and it was carried out using 60 piglets weaned at 21 days of age (5.43 ± 0.46 kg) in a complete random design, in a 2 x 2 factorial composed of two levels of milk protein (with and without, 4%) and two levels of zinc (with or without, 2,250 ppm) in the diet. In the 1-7 day experiment period, zinc provided better feed conversion and the in the 1-14 day experiment period, it promoted higher body weight at 14 days and higher weight gain. Supply of milk protein in the diet worsened feed conversion in the two phases (from 1 to 7 days and from 1 to 14 days of the experiment) and it resulted in a lower crypts depth in the jejunum and a higher villous height on day 14 of the experiment. On the 7th day of the experiment, there was an interaction among milk protein and supplemental zinc for villous height:crypts depth relationship, which was also higher for animals fed milk protein. The addition of zinc in the diet reduced insuline-like growth factor concentration and the average weight of the liver on day 14 of the experiment while the use of milk protein increased IGF-I concentrations. The inclusion of milk protein improves feed conversion, affects intestine morphology and increases IGF-I concentration, but supplementation of zinc is not efficient to affect levels of growth hormone in the organism.Zinpro Performance Mineral

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of ractopamine and chromium-methionine additions and their combinations in diets for growing and finishing swines on performance, carcass traits and meat quality. Sixty-four Topigs line swines at 26.56 ± 3.11 kg initial body weight were distributed in a randomized block experimental design in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme with two levels of ractopamine (0 and 5 ppm) and two levels of chromium-methionine (0 and 400 ppb), totaling four diets with eight replications (blocks) per diet. In each one of the three following phases, growing 1 (from 26.56 kg to 50.51 kg), growing 2 (from 50.51 kg to 70.32 kg) and finishing (from 70.32 kg to 114.80 kg), meal rations and water were given ad libitum to animals. When pigs reached 114.80 ± 4.98 kg body weight, they were slaughtered and carcasses were evaluated regarded to cold carcass yield, carcass length, backfat thickness, loin eye area and fat:meat ratio. Samples of longissimus dorsi muscle were taken to measure colour, final pH and drip loss. Supplementation of ractopamine improved feed conversion, cold carcass yield, loin eye area, fat:meat ratio and drip loss, and it reduced redness and yellowness components of meat. Although chromium-methionine decreased daily feed intake, it does not affect the performance and carcass traits neither meat quality of swines. Supplementation of ractopamine combined to chromium-methionine do not affect carcass traits and meat quality of animals

A PL para esta fase proporcionou menor CA (P<0,01).A hundred and twenty Dalland pigs (60 in each experiment), weaned at 21 days of age and with 5,43 kg &#177; 0,46 (Exp. 1) e 5,81 kg &#177; 0,54 (Exp. 2) of average live weight were used to evaluate the presence of milk protein or supplemental zinc on performance, IGF-I, GH and zinc plasma concentrations, intestinal morphology and relative weight of liver and small intestine. A 14-d (Exp.1) and 28-d (Exp.2) randomized complete block design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (milk protein and supplemental zinc): T1 = basal diet with corn and soybean meal (BD) with milk protein (MP) + 2000 ppm of zinc (ZnO) + 250 ppm of zinc (Zn-amino acid); T2 = BD with MP with no supplemental zinc; T3 = BD with no MP + 2000 ppm of zinc (ZnO) + 250 ppm of zinc (Zn- amino acid); T4 = BD with no MP and no supplemental zinc. In Exp.1, pigs fed with supplemental zinc had lower feed conversion (FC) for 1-7d period (P<.04) and for 1-14d period showed higher body weight at 28 days (BW28) (P<.06) and average daily gain (ADG) (P<.05). The MP improved FC for 1-7d (P<.001) and 1-14d period (P<.02), respectively. For plasma concentrations, supplemental zinc decreased IGF-I concentrations (P<.007) while there was an increase IGF-I concentration for MP at 14-d. For morphology data, MP provided shorter crypts depth (CD) on jejune at 7-d (P<.07) and higher villus height (VH) on duodenum at 14-d (P<.04). There was interaction between zinc and MP for VH:CD relation on jejune at 7-d (P<.009) and also this relation was bigger for animals fed with MP (P<.004) and supplemental zinc (P<.02). The relative weight of liver at 14-d was smaller for animal fed with supplemental zinc (P<.02). In Exp.2, for 1-14d period, the animals fed with MP decreased average daily feed intake (ADFI) (P<.01), while the supplemental zinc increased BW14 (P<.07) e decreased ADFI (P<.01). For 14-28d period, there was interaction between MP and supplemental zinc for BW28 e ADG (P<.05). Also, the animals fed supplemental zinc had higher BW28 e ADG. For the whole period (1-28d), there was interaction between MP and supplemental zinc (P<.07) for BW28, ADG e FC and considering isolated factors, supplemental zinc provided higher BW28 (P<.007) e higher ADG (P<.007) and MP for this period provided better FC (P<.01)

    No full text
Using 960 brown laying hens from 20 to 48 wk of age, in a 4 × 5 factorial arrangement, the effects on production, quality of eggs, and nutrient balance of analysed 18, 41, 61, and 111 mg kg−1 of copper (Cu) and of 0.550%, 0.679%, 0.793%, 0.845%, and 0.948% of methionine and cysteine (Met + Cys) were evaluated. Treatments were administered to six replicate cages (eight hens per cage). At the 49th wk of age, 320 of these hens were kept under the same experimental conditions to evaluate the nutrient balance, and each treatment was allocated to four replicate cages (four hens per cage). The trend of interaction effect between Cu and Met + Cys levels was observed on egg weight and mass. The interaction between mineral and amino acid was characterized on egg quality variables. Quadratic equations indicated that increasing the dietary level of Cu reduced the estimate requirement of Met + Cys for hens. Across the entire experimental period, the total estimated Met + Cys level was 0.755% ± 0.021% based on the performance variables. As Cu increased in the diet, it decreased the estimated Met + Cys level to ensure egg weight, mass, and egg quality. Level of chelated Cu above 23 mg kg−1 may negatively affect the egg quality. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page. No full text
Seventy-two crossbred pigs (Landrace x Large White) average initial body weight of 7.1kg and 20 crossbred pigs average initial body weight of 18.9kg were used in the performance and digestibility experiments to evaluate high-moisture corn silage with different particle sizes for piglets in nursery phase. A randomized block design was used. In both experiments the nutritional values of high-moisture corn silage with 979, 1168 and 2186µm geometric mean particle sizes (GM) and dry corn with 594µm GM were evaluated. From day 0 to 8, high-moisture corn silage provided daily feed intake (ADFI) lower than dry corn. A linear increase was observed to this variable when increasing the particle size of the silage. The silage with intermediate and coarse particle sizes provided higher feed/weight gain than the dry corn, but no difference in average daily gain (ADG) was observed. Throughout the experimental period, there were no statistical differences in ADFI and ADG. Therefore, the silage improved feed/weight gain in comparison to the dry corn. There was a linear increase of values of this variable as particle size of the silage increased. No effect of particle size of the silage on the apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of dry matter and crude protein was observed. However, it provided higher phosphorus ADC and values of digestible energy than the dry corn. Calcium ADC as well as values of metabolizable energy increased for silage with fine and intermediate particle sizes in comparison to the dry corn silage. Calcium ADC linearly decreased as the particle size of the silage increased

The purpose of this work was to evaluate three levels of use of glycerol (0, 3, 6 and 9%) a byproduct of biodiesel production, in the diets of growing and finishing swines on performance, on carcass traits and on meat quality. A total of sixty-four Topigs pigs with 33.27 ± 4.66 kg initial body weight were distributed in 32 pens accordingly to the initial weight in a complete random block design with eight replicates (blocks) per level of glycerol. In each of the three phases: growth 1 (33.27 to 65.00 kg), growth 2 (65.00 to 85.00 kg) and finishing (85.00 to 99.97 kg), the animals were fed isonutritional rations and water ad libitum. When the animals reached 99.97 ± 1.92 kg body weight, they were slaughtered and the following carcass traits were evaluated: hot carcass yield, carcass length, backfat thickness, loin eye area and fat/meat ratio. Samples of longissimus dorsi were taken for pH measurement, color and water drip loss. The addition of glycerol into the diet reduced only the daily weight gain during growth periods 1 and 2. Generally, glycerol can be used as energetic ingredient in diets for growing and finishing pigs up to 9% with no effect on performance, carcass quality and meat quality

Effects of analgesic and noise stimulus in gait score assessment.

    No full text
This experiment was carried out aiming to assess walking manner and speed of broiler chickens with different gait scores (GS), with or without sound stimulus, and with or without administration of analgesic. To that end, 1,000 birds were evaluated by the GS test and 74 were selected for walking speed analyses. Weight at slaughter and breast yield values were obtained for comparisons. Walking speed analyses, both with and without analgesic and with and without stimulus were performed. Non-parametric statistics was applied to the GS data that did not meet the assumptions of the statistical model (normality and homogenicity) using Fisher's exact test according to the data behavior (P<0.05). The analyses of data on speed, weight at slaughter, and breast yield were evaluated by ANOVA and compared by Tukey's test (P<0.05). Walking speed differed after acoustic stimulus with or without administration of metamizole sodium. Body weight was also different in each GS. It is thus concluded that the birds may feel discomfort when their GS is higher than 0, but that such discomfort may be suppressed when they are stimulated to walk
