Context. The star γ Cep is known as a single-lined spectroscopic triple system at a distance of 13.8 pc, composed of a K1 III-IV primary star with V = 3.2 mag, a stellar-mass companion in a 66-67 year orbit (Torres 2007, ApJ, 654, 1095), and a substellar companion with M_p sin i = 1.7 M_(Jup) that is most likely a planet (Hatzes et al. 2003, ApJ, 599, 1383). Aims. We aim to obtain a first direct detection of the stellar companion, to determine its current orbital position (for comparison with the spectroscopic and astrometric data), its infrared magnitude and, hence, mass. Methods. We use the Adaptive Optics camera CIAO at the Japanese 8 m telescope Subaru on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, with the semi-transparent coronograph to block most of the light from the bright primary γ Cep A, and to detect at the same time the faint companion B. In addition, we also used the IR camera Ω Cass at the Calar Alto 3.5 m telescope, Spain, to image γ Cep A and B by adding up many very short integrations (without AO). Results. γ Cep B is clearly detected on our CIAO and Ω Cass images. We use a photometric standard star to determine the magnitude of B after PSF subtraction in the Subaru image, and the magnitude difference between A and B in the Calar Alto images, and find an average value of K = 7.3 ± 0.2 mag. The separations and position angles between A and B are measured on 15 July 2006 and 11 and 12 Sept. 2006, B is slightly south of west of A. Conclusions. By combining the radial velocity, astrometric, and imaging data, we have refined the binary orbit and determined the dynamical masses of the two stars in the γ Cep system, namely 1.40 ± 0.12 M_☉ for the primary and 0.409 ± 0.018 M_☉ for the secondary (consistent with being a M4 dwarf). We also determine the minimum mass of the sub-stellar companion to be M_p sin i = 1.60 ± 0.13 M_(Jup)

    Quantum Electrodynamics vacuum polarization solver

The self-consistent modeling of vacuum polarization due to virtual electron-positron fluctuations is of relevance for many near term experiments associated with high intensity radiation sources and represents a milestone in describing scenarios of extreme energy density. We present a generalized finite-difference time-domain solver that can incorporate the modifications to Maxwell's equations due to vacuum polarization. Our multidimensional solver reproduced in one dimensional configurations the results for which an analytic treatment is possible, yielding vacuum harmonic generation and birefringence. The solver has also been tested for two-dimensional scenarios where finite laser beam spot sizes must be taken into account. We employ this solver to explore different types of counter-propagating configurations that can be relevant for future planned experiments aiming to detect quantum vacuum dynamics at ultra-high electromagnetic field intensities

Time-resolved spectroscopy of the pulsating CV GW Lib

    Get PDF
We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy of the dwarf nova GW Librae during its rare 2007 April superoutburst and compare these with quiescent epochs. The data provide the first opportunity to track the evolution of the principal spectral features. In the early stages of the outburst, the optically thick disc dominates the optical and the line components show clear orbital radial velocity excursions. In the course of several weeks, optically thin regions become more prominent as strong emission lines replace the broad disc absorption. Post-outburst spectroscopy covering the I band illustrates the advantages of Ca II relative to the commonly used Balmer lines when attempting to constrain binary parameters. Due to the lower ionization energy combined with smaller thermal and shear broadening of these lines, a sharp emission component is seen to be moving in between the accretion disc peaks in the Ca II line. No such component is visible in the Balmer lines. We interpret this as an emission component originating on the hitherto unseen mass donor star. This emission component has a mean velocity of similar to -15 +/- 5 km s(-1) which is associated with the systemic velocity., and a velocity semi-amplitude of K-em = 82.2 +/- 4.9 km s(-1). Doppler tomography reveals an asymmetric accretion disc, with the S-wave mapping to a sharp spot in the tomogram with a velocity consistent to what is obtained with line profile fitting. A centre of symmetry analysis of the disc component suggests a very small value for the WD orbital velocity K-1 as is also inferred from double Gaussian fits to the spectral lines. While our conservative dynamical limits place a hard upper limit on the binary mass ratio of q < 0.23, we favour a significantly lower value near q similar to 0.06. Pulsation modelling suggests a white dwarf mass similar to 1 M-circle dot. This, paired with a low-mass donor, near the empirical sequence of an evolved cataclysmic variable close to the period bounce, appears to be consistent with all the observational constraints to date

Kubo formula for Floquet states and photoconductivity oscillations in a 2D electron gas

The recent discovery of the microwave induced vanishing resistance states in a two dimensional electron system (2DES) is an unexpected and surprising phenomena. In these experiments the magnetoresistance of a high mobility 2DES under the influence of microwave radiation of frequency ω\omega at moderate values of the magnetic field, exhibits strong oscillations with zero-resistance states (ZRS) governed by the ratio ω/ωc\omega /\omega_c, where ωc\omega_c is the cyclotron frequency. In this work we present a model for the photoconductivity of a two dimensional electron system (2DES) subjected to a magnetic field. The model includes the microwave and Landau contributions in a non-perturbative exact way, impurity scattering effects are treated perturbatively. In our model, the Landau-Floquet states act coherently with respect to the oscillating field of the impurities, that in turn induces transitions between these levels. Based on this formalism, we provide a Kubo-like formula that takes into account the oscillatory Floquet structure of the problem. We study the effects of both short-range and long-range disorder on the photoconductivity. Our calculation yields a magnetoresistance oscillatory behavior with the correct period and phase. It is found that, in agreement with experiment, negative dissipation can only be induced in very high mobility samples. We analyze the dependence of the results on the microwave power and polarization. For high-intensity radiation multi-photon processes take place predicting new negative-resistance states centered at ω/ωc=1/2 \omega / \omega_c=1/2, and ω/ωc=3/2 \omega / \omega_c= 3/2.Comment: Final version, accepted for publication in Phys. When performed in the proper low field, low frequency limits, measurements of the dynamics and the nonlinear susceptibility in the model Ising magnet in transverse field, LiHoxY1−xF4\text{LiHo}_x\text{Y}_{1-x}\text{F}_4, prove the existence of a spin glass transition for xx = 0.167 and 0.198. The classical behavior tracks for the two concentrations, but the behavior in the quantum regime at large transverse fields differs because of the competing effects of quantum entanglement and random fields.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Electromagnetic self-force on a charged particle on Kerr spacetime: equatorial circular orbits

We calculate the self-force acting on a charged particle on a circular geodesic orbit in the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole. We show by direct calculation that the dissipative self-force balances with the sum of the flux radiated to infinity and through the black hole horizon. Prograde orbits are found to stimulate black hole superradiance, but we confirm that the condition for floating orbits cannot be met. We calculate the conservative component of the self-force by application of the mode sum regularization method, and we present a selection of numerical results. By numerical fitting, we extract the leading-order coefficients in post-Newtonian expansions. The self-force on the innermost stable circular orbits of the Kerr spacetime is calculated, and comparisons are drawn between the electromagnetic and gravitational self forces.Comment: 41 pages, 10 figures, 1 tabl
