    Quasi-free Compton Scattering from the Deuteron and Nucleon Polarizabilities

    Cross sections for quasi-free Compton scattering from the deuteron were measured for incident energies of 236--260 MeV at the laboratory angle -135 degrees. The recoil nucleons were detected in a liquid-scintillator array situated at 20 degrees. The measured differential cross sections were used, with the calculations of Levchuk et al., to determine the polarizabilities of the bound nucleons. For the bound proton, the extracted values were consistent with the accepted value for the free proton. Combining our results for the bound neutron with those from Rose et al., we obtain one-sigma constraints of alpha_n = 7.6-14.0 and beta_n = 1.2-7.6.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted in PR

    Sum rule for the backward spin polarizability of the nucleon from a backward dispersion relation

    A new sum rule for γπ\gamma_\pi, the backward spin polarizability of the nucleon, is derived from a backward-angle dispersion relation. Taking into account single- and multi-pion photoproduction in the s-channel up to the energy 1.5 GeV and resonances in the t-channel with mass below 1.5 GeV, it is found for the proton and neutron that [γπ]p[\gamma_\pi]_p = -39.5 +/- 2.4 and [γπ]n[\gamma_\pi]_n = 52.5 +/- 2.4, respectively, in units of 10^{-4} fm^4.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, revtex.     Complete one-loop analysis of the nucleon's spin polarizabilities

    We present a complete one-loop analysis of the four nucleon spin polarizabilities in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The first non-vanishing contributions to the isovector and first corrections to the isoscalar spin polarizabilities are calculated. No unknown parameters enter these predictions. We compare our results to various dispersive analyses. We also discuss the convergence of the chiral expansion and the role of the delta isobar.Comment: 4 pp, REVTE

    Generalized Polarizabilities of the Nucleon in Chiral Effective Theories

    Using the techniques of chiral effective field theories we evaluate the so called generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon, which characterize the structure dependent components in virtual Compton scattering (VCS) as probed in the electron scattering reaction e N \to e' N gamma. Results are given for both spin-dependent and spin-independent structure effects to O(p^3) in SU(2) Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory and to O(epsilon^3) in the SU(2) Small Scale Expansion.     Fixed-t subtracted dispersion relations for Compton scattering off the nucleon

    We present fixed-tt subtracted dispersion relations for Compton scattering off the nucleon at energies EγE_\gamma \leq 500 MeV, as a formalism to extract the nucleon polarizabilities with a minimum of model dependence. The subtracted dispersion integrals are mainly saturated by πN\pi N intermediate states in the ss-channel γNπNγN\gamma N \to \pi N \to \gamma N and ππ\pi \pi intermediate states in the tt-channel γγππNNˉ\gamma \gamma \to \pi \pi \to N \bar N. For the subprocess γγππ\gamma \gamma \to \pi \pi, we construct a unitarized amplitude and find a good description of the available data. We show results for Compton scattering using the subtracted dispersion relations and display the sensitivity on the scalar polarizability difference αβ\alpha - \beta and the backward spin polarizability γπ\gamma_\pi, which enter directly as fit parameters in the present formalism

    Real and Virtual Compton Scattering off the Nucleon

    A review is given of the very recent developments in the fields of real and virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon. Both real and virtual Compton scattering reactions are discussed at low outgoing photon energy where one accesses polarizabilities of the nucleon. The real Compton scattering at large momentum transfer is discussed which is asymptotically a tool to obtain information on the valence quark wave function of the nucleon. The rapid developments in deeply virtual Compton scattering and associated meson electroproduction reactions at high energy, high photon virtuality and small momentum transfer to the nucleon are discussed. A unified theoretical description of those processes has emerged over the last few years, which gives access to new, generalized parton distributions. The experimental status and perspectives in these fields are also discussed.Comment: 25 pages, 17 figure
