    Morocco's free trade agreement with the European community : a quantitative assessment

    Morocco is interested in developing a reciprocal free trade agreement with the European Community (EC), although it already enjoys free access to EC markets in industrial products and is not obligated to give EC exporters reciprocal access. But Moroccan agricultural exports are impeded by agricultural protection in the European Community. A free trade agreement would require that Morocco lower its moderately high tariffs against its most important trading partner. Tariff reductions against the European Community but not against the rest of the world may provide benefits provided the trade diversion costs of preferential tariff reduction do not dominate. The authors apply a 39 sector general equilibrium model of the Moroccan economy which includes the sectors most likely to be affected by such an agreement. They investigate the economic effects of the prospective free trade agreement as well as five other trade liberalization scenarios for Morocco. Some of their most important findings are: The welfare benefits to Morocco from a free trade agreement with the European Community would be about 1.5 percent GDP. Such substantial welfare gains partly reflect the benefits of reducing dispersion in the tariff regime. Welfare benefits of about 2.5 percent of GDP would accrue from liberalizing trade with the rest of the world - with only slightly higher adjustment costs. Liberalizing trade with the world would provide greater benefits because it would eliminate the trade diversion costs associated with discriminatory trade liberalization. (Although the fact that significant benefits would accrue from discriminatory liberalization against imports from either the European Community or the rest of the world indicates that trade diversion is not dominant.) As a result of improved access to the European Community, employment and output in the vegetable and citrus fruit sectors would expand. But the phosphate sector stands to gain most from the free trade agreement because liberalization wouldinduce a depreciation in the real exchange rate. Morocco's cereal, meat, dairy, and sugar sectors would loose more in terms of employment, because of significantly lower import prices from the European Community. The nontraded goods sector would also contract slightly. The value added tax would have to be increased to compensate for the loss in tariff revenues, on which Morocco depends.     A geometry optimization framework for photonic crystal design

    AbstractThe performance of photonic crystal devices can depend strongly on their geometry. Alas, their fundamental physics offers relatively little by way of pointers in terms of optimum shapes, so numerical design search techniques must be used in an attempt to determine high performance layouts. We discuss strategies for solving this type of optimization problem, the main challenge of which is the conflict between the enormous size of the space of potentially useful designs and the relatively high computational cost of evaluating the performance of putative shapes. The optimization technique proposed here operates over increasing levels of fidelity, both in terms of the resolution of its non-parametric shape definition and in terms of the resolution of the numerical analysis of the performance of putative designs. This is a generic method, potentially applicable to any type of electromagnetic device shape design problem. We also consider a methodology for assessing the robustness of the optima generated through this process, investigating the impact of manufacturing errors on their performance. As an illustration, we apply this technology to the design of a two-dimensional photonic crystal structure; the result features a large complete band gap structure and a topology that is different from previously published designs

    Autodisplay for the co-expression of lipase and foldase on the surface of E. coli: washing with designer bugs

    Background: Lipases including the lipase from Burkholderia cepacia are in a main focus in biotechnology research since many years because of their manifold possibilities for application in industrial processes. The application of Burkholderia cepacia lipase for these processes appears complicated because of the need for support by a chaperone, the lipase specific foldase. Purification and reconstitution protocols therefore interfere with an economic implementation of such enzymes in industry. Autodisplay is a convenient method to express a variety of passenger proteins on the surface of E. coli. This method makes subsequent purification steps to obtain the protein of interest unnecessary. If enzymes are used as passengers, the corresponding cells can simply be applied as whole cell biocatalysts. Furthermore, enzymes surface displayed in this manner often acquire stabilization by anchoring within the outer membrane of E. coli. Results: The lipase and its chaperone foldase from B. cepacia were co-expressed on the surface of E. coli via autodisplay. The whole cell biocatalyst obtained thereby exhibited an enzymatic activity of 2.73 mU mL-1 towards the substrate p-nitrophenyl palmitate when applied in an OD578 =1. Outer membrane fractions prepared from the same culture volume showed a lipase activity of 4.01 mU mL-1. The lipase-whole cell biocatalyst as well as outer membrane preparations thereof were used in a standardized laundry test, usually adopted to determine the power of washing agents. In this test, the lipase whole cell biocatalyst and the membrane preparation derived thereof exhibited the same lipolytic activity as the purified lipase from B. cepacia and a lipase preparation which is already applied in commercial washing agents. Conclusions: Co-expression of both the lipase and its chaperone foldase on the surface of E. coli yields a lipid degrading whole cell biocatalyst. Therefore the chaperone supported folding process, absolutely required for the lipolytic activity appears not to be hindered by surface display. Furthermore, the cells and the membrane preparations appeared to be stable enough to endure a European standard laundry test and show efficient fat removal properties herein.<br

    Supplier selection model for a Brazilian oil company based on a multi-criteria group decision approach

    Background: Increasing competition among companies in the oil and gas industry results in a greater need for efficient processes. In Brazil, most oil operations are owned by a single company, which has a public trade structure. The company requires a large number of suppliers, including suppliers of raw materials, equipment and services. In fact, the company needs to employ experts to assist in the supplier selection process in order to be able to choose the best available alternatives. Therefore, supplier selection has been seen to have a significant impact on the success or otherwise of the company´s ventures. Objectives: This article proposes a group decision multi-criteria model for selecting suppliers for a Brazilian oil company. Method: It is proposed to use the PROMETHEE II method to obtain decision-makers’ individual evaluations and the voting procedure by quartiles so as to convert the individual positions into a position for the group. Results: An application of the model is performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the model in addressing supplier selection problems in a context with multiple stakeholders. Combining the results from the individual analysis of the PROMETHEE II method with the voting by quartiles procedure allowed individual preferences to be aggregated into a result that was representative of the group and produced a ranking of suppliers for one of the type of services used by the company. Conclusion: The results were very satisfactory, demonstrating that it is possible to apply the model to a context featuring additional decision-makers and alternatives

    We construct a particular class of quantum states for a massless, minimally coupled free scalar field which are of the form of a superposition of the vacuum and multi-mode two-particle states. These states can exhibit local negative energy densities. Furthermore, they can produce an arbitrarily large amount of negative energy in a given region of space at a fixed time.     Oocysts of Isospora papionis in the skeletal muscles of chacma baboons

    Numerous partially and fully sporulated oocysts of Isospora papionis were found in the skeletal muscles of two free-ranging adult male chacma baboons (Papio ursinus). Only one of them had I. papionis oocysts in the intestines and then only a few.
