    Properties of the Amorphous Fe(100-x)B(x) Alloy Prepared by rf-Sputtering Technique

    The amorphous Fe(100-x)B(x) alloys with 18 ≤ x ≤ 42 were prepared by applying a rf-sputtering technique. The chemical composition of the sputtered films was well controlled by varying the area ratio of B plate to Fe plate, which were used as a composite target. The crystallization temperature of the amorphous films linearly rises with increasing of B content up to x = 36, but falls in a composition range of 36 ≤ x ≤ 42. The amorphous Fe(100-x)B(x) films exhibited ferromagnetism in the whole compositions studied in the present work. The internal magnetic field of the amorphous films decreases with increasing of B content, since the charge transfer increases with B atom in the system Fe(100-x)B(x)

    The Discovery of a Very Narrow-Line Star Forming Obat a Redshift of 5.66ject

    We report on the discovery of a very narrow-line star forming object beyond redshift of 5. Using the prime-focus camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope together with a narrow-passband filter centered at λc\lambda_{\rm c} = 8150 \AA with passband of Δλ\Delta\lambda = 120 \AA, we have obtained a very deep image of the field surrounding the quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 at a redshift of 5.74. Comparing this image with optical broad-band images, we have found an object with a very strong emission line. Our follow-up optical spectroscopy has revealed that this source is at a redshift of z=5.655±0.002z=5.655\pm0.002, forming stars at a rate 13 h0.72 M\sim 13 ~ h_{0.7}^{-2} ~ M_\odot yr1^{-1}. Remarkably, the velocity dispersion of Lyα\alpha-emitting gas is only 22 km s1^{-1}. Since a blue half of the Lyα\alpha emission could be absorbed by neutral hydrogen gas, perhaps in the system, a modest estimate of the velocity dispersion may be \gtrsim 44 km s1^{-1}. Together with a linear size of 7.7 h0.71h_{0.7}^{-1} kpc, we estimate a lower limit of the dynamical mass of this object to be 2×109M\sim 2 \times 10^9 M_\odot. It is thus suggested that LAE J1044-0123 is a star-forming dwarf galaxy (i.e., a subgalactic object or a building block) beyond redshift 5 although we cannot exclude a possibility that most Lyα\alpha emission is absorbed by the red damping wing of neutral intergalactic matter.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures.     In vivo imaging of zebrafish retinal cells using fluorescent coumarin derivatives

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The zebrafish visual system is a good research model because the zebrafish retina is very similar to that of humans in terms of the morphologies and functions. Studies of the retina have been facilitated by improvements in imaging techniques. <it>In vitro </it>techniques such as immunohistochemistry and <it>in vivo </it>imaging using transgenic zebrafish have been proven useful for visualizing specific subtypes of retinal cells. In contrast, <it>in vivo </it>imaging using organic fluorescent molecules such as fluorescent sphingolipids allows non-invasive staining and visualization of retinal cells <it>en masse</it>. However, these fluorescent molecules also localize to the interstitial fluid and stain whole larvae.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We screened fluorescent coumarin derivatives that might preferentially stain neuronal cells including retinal cells. We identified four coumarin derivatives that could be used for <it>in vivo </it>imaging of zebrafish retinal cells. The retinas of living zebrafish could be stained by simply immersing larvae in water containing 1 μg/ml of a coumarin derivative for 30 min. By using confocal laser scanning microscopy, the lamination of the zebrafish retina was clearly visualized. Using these coumarin derivatives, we were able to assess the development of the zebrafish retina and the morphological abnormalities induced by genetic or chemical interventions. The coumarin derivatives were also suitable for counter-staining of transgenic zebrafish expressing fluorescent proteins in specific subtypes of retinal cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The coumarin derivatives identified in this study can stain zebrafish retinal cells in a relatively short time and at low concentrations, making them suitable for <it>in vivo </it>imaging of the zebrafish retina. Therefore, they will be useful tools in genetic and chemical screenings using zebrafish to identify genes and chemicals that may have crucial functions in the retina.</p

    Enhanced stability of hippocampal place representation caused by reduced magnesium block of NMDA receptors in the dentate gyrus

    BACKGROUND: Voltage-dependent block of the NMDA receptor by Mg(2+) is thought to be central to the unique involvement of this receptor in higher brain functions. However, the in vivo role of the Mg(2+) block in the mammalian brain has not yet been investigated, because brain-wide loss of the Mg(2+) block causes perinatal lethality. In this study, we used a brain-region specific knock-in mouse expressing an NMDA receptor that is defective for the Mg(2+) block in order to test its role in neural information processing. RESULTS: We devised a method to induce a single amino acid substitution (N595Q) in the GluN2A subunit of the NMDA receptor, specifically in the hippocampal dentate gyrus in mice. This mutation reduced the Mg(2+) block at the medial perforant path–granule cell synapse and facilitated synaptic potentiation induced by high-frequency stimulation. The mutants had more stable hippocampal place fields in the CA1 than the controls did, and place representation showed lower sensitivity to visual differences. In addition, behavioral tests revealed that the mutants had a spatial working memory deficit. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the Mg(2+) block in the dentate gyrus regulates hippocampal spatial information processing by attenuating activity-dependent synaptic potentiation in the dentate gyrus

    The First Very Long Baseline Interferometry Image of 44 GHz Methanol Maser with the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA)

    We have carried out the first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging of 44 GHz class I methanol maser (7_{0}-6_{1}A^{+}) associated with a millimeter core MM2 in a massive star-forming region IRAS 18151-1208 with KaVA (KVN and VERA Array), which is a newly combined array of KVN (Korean VLBI Network) and VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). We have succeeded in imaging compact maser features with a synthesized beam size of 2.7 milliarcseconds x 1.5 milliarcseconds (mas). These features are detected at a limited number of baselines within the length of shorter than approximately 650 km corresponding to 100 Mlambda in the uv-coverage. The central velocity and the velocity width of the 44 GHz methanol maser are consistent with those of the quiescent gas rather than the outflow traced by the SiO thermal line. The minimum component size among the maser features is ~ 5 mas x 2 mas, which corresponds to the linear size of ~ 15 AU x 6 AU assuming a distance of 3 kpc. The brightness temperatures of these features range from ~ 3.5 x 10^{8} to 1.0 x 10^{10} K, which are higher than estimated lower limit from a previous Very Large Array observation with the highest spatial resolution of ~ 50 mas. The 44 GHz class I methanol maser in IRAS 18151-1208 is found to be associated with the MM2 core, which is thought to be less evolved than another millimeter core MM1 associated with the 6.7 GHz class II methanol maser.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure

    An overview of the current status of the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope constructed and operated at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan is presented. The basic design concept and the verified performance of the telescope system are described. Also given are the status of the instrument package offered to the astronomical community, the status of operation, and some of the future plans. The status of the telescope reported in a number of SPIE papers as of the summer of 2002 are incorporated with some updates included as of 2004 February.     Astrometry of H2_{2}O Masers in Nearby Star-Forming Regions with VERA. III. IRAS 22198+6336 in L1204G

    We present results of multi-epoch VLBI observations with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) of the 22 GHz H2_{2}O masers associated with a young stellar object (YSO) IRAS 22198+6336 in a dark cloud L1204G. Based on the phase-referencing VLBI astrometry, we derive an annual parallax of IRAS 22198+6336 to be 1.309±\pm0.047 mas, corresponding to the distance of 764±\pm27 pc from the Sun. Although the most principal error source of our astrometry is attributed to the internal structure of the maser spots, we successfully reduce the errors in the derived annual parallax by employing the position measurements for all of the 26 detected maser spots. Based on this result, we reanalyze the spectral energy distribution (SED) of IRAS 22198+6336 and find that the bolometric luminosity and total mass of IRAS 22198+6336 are 450LL_{\odot} and 7MM_{\odot}, respectively. These values are consistent with an intermediate-mass YSO deeply embedded in the dense dust core, which has been proposed to be an intermediate-mass counterpart of a low-mass Class 0 source. In addition, we obtain absolute proper motions of the H2_{2}O masers for the most blue-shifted components. We propose that the collimated jets aligned along the east-west direction are the most plausible explanation for the origin of the detected maser features.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ (Vol.60, No.5, October 25, VERA special issue
