Interactions of malnutrition and immune impairment, with specific reference to immunity against parasites

KEY POINTS: 1. Clinical malnutrition is a heterogenous group of disorders including macronutrient deficiencies leading to body cell mass depletion and micronutrient deficiencies, and these often coexist with infectious and inflammatory processes and environmental problems. 2. There is good evidence that specific micronutrients influence immunity, particularly zinc and vitamin A. Iron may have both beneficial and deleterious effects depending on circumstances. 3. There is surprisingly slender good evidence that immunity to parasites is dependent on macronutrient intake or body composition

A Mouse Model of Acrodermatitis Enteropathica: Loss of Intestine Zinc Transporter ZIP4 (Slc39a4) Disrupts the Stem Cell Niche and Intestine Integrity

Loss-of-function of the zinc transporter ZIP4 in the mouse intestine mimics the lethal human disease acrodermatitis enteropathica. This is a rare disease in humans that is not well understood. Our studies demonstrate the paramount importance of ZIP4 in the intestine in this disease and reveal that a root cause of lethality is disruption of the intestine stem cell niche and impaired function of the small intestine. This, in turn, leads to dramatic weight loss and death unless treated with exogenous zinc

Medication-induced esophagitis

Clinical, radiographic, and endoscopic features of medication-induced esophagitis (MIE) in 4 patients are described. When the clinical history and symptoms raise a high index of suspicion for MIE, a double-contrast esophagram or endoscopic examination should be performed. The proximal esophagus, particularly the aortic segment, and occasionally the distal esophagus are the sites most commonly affected by MIE. Superficial mucosal erosions, shallow ulcers, and subtle mucosal alterations can be demonstrated by double-contrast esophagrams if careful attention is paid during performance and interpretation of these studies in an appropriate clinical setting.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/48123/1/261_2005_Article_BF02035023.pd
