Purpose: The use of prosthesis and an individual's perception of the prosthesis are associated with the quality of life. The study aimed to evaluate the quality of life related to prosthesis in Syrian refugees with lower extremity amputees. Methods: The study was conducted at three different prosthetic-orthotic centers managed by the Alliance of International Doctors. Seventy-six male (age=37.76 +/- 12.83 years) and 12 females (age=37.16 +/- 16.07 years) Syrian refugees with unilateral lower extremity (transtibial and transfemoral/knee disarticulation) amputation were evaluated. Demographic and amputation and prostheses-related characteristics were recorded. Quality of life related to the prosthesis was evaluated using the Prosthetic Evaluation Questionnaire (PEQ). Results: All PEQ scores of the transtibial and transfemoral/knee disarticulation amputees were similar (p>0.05). The PEQ-Appearance score of the single amputees was observed to be significantly lower than the married amputees (p=0.013). The PEQ-Ambulation score of participants using prosthesis over one year was significantly higher (p=0.038). The PEQ-Sound score of participants using prosthesis less than one year was found significantly higher (p=0.048). The PEQ-sound scores of chronic disease group were significantly higher than those of accident and war associated amputees (p=0.020). Conclusion: Quality of life of the refugee amputees regarding prosthesis and living with a prosthesis were similar regardless of the level of amputation. Expectations change with the increase in the duration of prosthesis use, and in single amputees, the expectation of cosmetic appearance becomes a concern

Body image and its relationship with exercise and sports in Turkish lower-limb amputees who use prosthesis

Purpose. - In this study, we investigated whether Turkish lower-limb amputees (LLA) using prosthesis, who participate in sports and exercise activities, have a different body image from those who do not participate in such physical activities. Method. - For this evaluation, we used the Amputee Body Image Scale (ABIS); in addition, a questionnaire for assessment of demographic characteristics of the subjects and issues regarding use of the prosthesis was applied. The study was conducted on 17 Turkish LLA participating in sports and exercise, and on 20 Turkish LLA not participating in sports and exercise activities. Results. - The mean ABIS score of LLA participating in sports and exercise was 25,5 +/- 7,33; mean ABIS score of LLA not participating in sports and exercise was 35,94 +/- 12,24; this difference was statistically significant (Mann-Whitney U, p < 0.05). ABIS scores for men and women were similar, regardless of participation in exercise and sports. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved

Comparison of the Immediate Effect of Petrissage Massage and Manual Lymph Drainage Following Exercise on Biomechanical and Viscoelastic Properties of the Rectus Femoris Muscle in Women

    No full text
Context: Fast and adequate recovery alter exercise and activity is important for increasing performance and preventing injuries. Inadequate recovery usually causes changes in the biomechanical and viscoelastic properties of the muscle. Objective: To compare the immediate effect of petrissage massage (PM) and manual lymph drainage (MLD) following submaximal exercise on the biomechanical and viscoelastic properties of the rectus femoris muscle in healthy women. Design: Cross-sectional, repeated-measures. Setting: Marmara University. Participants: 18 healthy female students. Intervention(s): Following the submaximal quadriceps strengthening exercise performed in 3 sets of 8 repetitions with intensity of 75% of 1 maximum repetition, participants' right leg received a 5-minute PM (PM group) and the contralateral leg received a 5-minute MLD application (MLD group). Main Outcome Measures: Skin temperature was measured using P45 thermographic thermal camera (Flir System; ThermaCAM, Danderyd, Sweden). and muscle tone, biomechanical, and viscoelastic features were measured with a myometer (Myoton AS, Tallinn, Estonia) at baseline, immediately postexercise, post-PM/MLD application, and 10 minutes postexercise. Results: In the PM group. the tonus (P = .002) and stiffness (P < .001) values measured after the massage and at the end of the 10-minute resting period were found to be statistically different than those measured right after the exercise (P < .05). Relaxation time and creep values at all measurement times were significantly different (P < .05). In the MLD group, it was observed the tonus (P < .001), stiffness (P = .025), and relaxation time (P < .01) values decreased significantly after the MLD compared with the values measured after the exercise; however, the creep value was found to be significantly different in all measurements (P < .05). Conclusion: PM and MLD reduce passive tissue stiffness and improve the extent of muscle extensibility over time against the muscle tensile strength. PM and MLD are therapeutic methods that can be used to support tissue recovery after exercise and prevent injuries

Giriş ve Amaç: Bu çalışma uluslararası bir sivil toplum örgütü aracılığıyla Türkiye’de protez hizmeti verilen Suriye savaşı mağduru transtibial ve transfemoral amputelerin protez memnuniyetlerini değerlendirmek ve protez memnuniyetine etki eden faktörleri belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Araştırma Mart, 2019- Eylül, 2020 tarihleri arasında xxxx Derneği Protez merkezlerinden protez hizmeti alan Suriye Savaşı mağduru unilateral transtibial (n=55) ve transfemoral (n=56) amputeler üzerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Protezle ilişkili memnuniyet değerlendirilmesi Orthotics Prostetics Users Survey- Cihaz Memnuniyeti Modülü (OPUS-CMM) ile yapılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde tanımlayıcı istatistiksel teknikler (ortalama ve standart sapma), ikili karşılaştırmalarda Bağımsız t Test, çoklu karşılaştırmalarda Kruskal Wallis Test kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Amputelerin cinsiyet, amputasyon seviyesi, amputasyon yılı, amputasyon nedeni, protez kullanım süresi ve süspansiyon tipine göre oluşturan alt gruplardaki OPUS-CMM puanlarının benzer olduğu görülmüştür (p>0,05). Sonuç: Türkiye’de yaşayan Suriyeli mülteci transtibial ve transfemoral amputelerde amputasyon seviyesi, cinsiyet, amputasyon yılı, protez kulllanım süresi ile süspansiyon tipinin protez memnuniyetini belirleyici bir etken olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the prosthesis satisfaction of transtibial and transfemoral amputees who were victims of the Syrian war, and to determine the factors affecting prosthesis satisfaction, through an international non-governmental organization. Materials and Methods: The research was carried out on unilateral transtibial (n=55) and transfemoral (n=56) amputees who were victims of the Syrian War, and who received prosthesis service from xxxx Association Prosthetic Centers between March, 2019- September, 2020. Prosthesis-related satisfaction was evaluated with the Orthotics Prostetics Users Survey-Device Satisfaction Module (OPUS-CMM). Descriptive statistical techniques (mean and standard deviation), Independent t-Test for pairwise comparisons, Kruskal Wallis Test for multiple comparisons were used in the analysis of the data. Results: OPUS-CMM scores of amputees were found to be similar in subgroups according to gender, amputation level, amputation year, amputation reason, prosthesis usage time and suspension type (p>0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that amputation level, gender, amputation year, prosthesis usage time and suspension type were not a determining factor for prosthesis satisfaction in Syrian refugee transtibial and transfemoral amputees living in Turkey
