Determination of Boundary Scattering, Intermagnon Scattering, and the Haldane Gap in Heisenberg Chains
Low-lying magnon dispersion in a S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (AF) chain
is analyzed using the non-Abelian DMRG method. The scattering length of the boundary coupling and the inter-magnon scattering length are
determined. The scattering length is found to exhibit a
characteristic diverging behavior at the crossover point. In contrast, the
Haldane gap , the magnon velocity , and remain constant at the
crossover. Our method allowed estimation of the gap of the S=2 AF chain to be
using a chain length longer than the correlation length

Spin injection and magnetoresistance in ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet tunnel junctions
We theoretically study the spin-dependent transport in a
ferromagnet/superconductor/ferro-magnet double barrier tunnel junction. The
spin-polarized tunneling currents give rise to spin imbalance in the
superconductor. The resulting nonequilibrium spin density suppresses the
superconductivity with increase of the tunneling currents. We focus on the
effect of asymmetry in the double tunnel junction, where the barrier height of
the tunnel junction and the spin-polarization of the ferromagnets are
different, on spin injection, and discuss how the superconductivity is
suppressed in the asymmetric junction. Our results explain recent experimental
results on the critical current suppression in high- SCs by spin
injection.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, proceeding of MMM'9
Retinal adaptation of Japanese common squid (Todarodes pacificus Steenstrup) to light changes
The response of retinae of the Japanese common squid (Todarodes pacificus Steenstrup) was recorded in relation to various light intensities. In the light-adapted eye of common squid, the black pigment ascends to the external limiting membrance of the retina. Conversely, in the dark-adapted eye the black pigment descends toward the center of the black pigment layer. To express the degree of adaptation, the authors give the ratio of the height (thickness) of the black pigment to the total height (thickness) of the retina as a percentage (%)
