Radio Emission from Ultra-Cool Dwarfs
The 2001 discovery of radio emission from ultra-cool dwarfs (UCDs), the very
low-mass stars and brown dwarfs with spectral types of ~M7 and later, revealed
that these objects can generate and dissipate powerful magnetic fields. Radio
observations provide unparalleled insight into UCD magnetism: detections extend
to brown dwarfs with temperatures <1000 K, where no other observational probes
are effective. The data reveal that UCDs can generate strong (kG) fields,
sometimes with a stable dipolar structure; that they can produce and retain
nonthermal plasmas with electron acceleration extending to MeV energies; and
that they can drive auroral current systems resulting in significant
atmospheric energy deposition and powerful, coherent radio bursts. Still to be
understood are the underlying dynamo processes, the precise means by which
particles are accelerated around these objects, the observed diversity of
magnetic phenomenologies, and how all of these factors change as the mass of
the central object approaches that of Jupiter. The answers to these questions
are doubly important because UCDs are both potential exoplanet hosts, as in the

Multiple-length-scale elastic instability mimics parametric resonance of nonlinear oscillators
Spatially confined rigid membranes reorganize their morphology in response to
the imposed constraints. A crumpled elastic sheet presents a complex pattern of
random folds focusing the deformation energy while compressing a membrane
resting on a soft foundation creates a regular pattern of sinusoidal wrinkles
with a broad distribution of energy. Here, we study the energy distribution for
highly confined membranes and show the emergence of a new morphological
instability triggered by a period-doubling bifurcation. A periodic
self-organized focalization of the deformation energy is observed provided an
up-down symmetry breaking, induced by the intrinsic nonlinearity of the
elasticity equations, occurs. The physical model, exhibiting an analogy with
parametric resonance in nonlinear oscillator, is a new theoretical toolkit to
understand the morphology of various confined systems, such as coated materials
or living tissues, e.g., wrinkled skin, internal structure of lungs, internal
elastica of an artery, brain convolutions or formation of fingerprints.
Moreover, it opens the way to new kind of microfabrication design of
multiperiodic or chaotic (aperiodic) surface topography via self-organization.Comment: Submitted for publicatio
Feynman Rules for the Rational Part of the Standard Model One-loop Amplitudes in the 't Hooft-Veltman Scheme
We study Feynman rules for the rational part of the Standard Model
amplitudes at one-loop level in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme.
Comparing our results for quantum chromodynamics and electroweak 1-loop
amplitudes with that obtained based on the Kreimer-Korner-Schilcher (KKS)
scheme, we find the latter result can be recovered when our
scheme becomes identical (by setting in our expressions)
with the KKS scheme. As an independent check, we also calculate Feynman rules
obtained in the KKS scheme, finding our results in complete agreement with
formulae presented in the literature. Our results, which are studied in two
different schemes, may be useful for clarifying the
problem in dimensional regularization. They are helpful to eliminate or find

Inelastic production in polarized photon-hadron collisions
Presented here is a calculation of inelastic production in polarized
photon-hadron collisions under the framework of NRQCD factorization formalism.
We consider the photoproduction of \jpsi in the energy range relevant to
HERA. The Weizs\"acker-Williams approximation is adopted in the evaluation of
the cross sections for collisions. We found that this process can give
another independent test for the color-octet mechanism, and the different
features for the two color-octet processes may provide further informations on
the mechanism for inelastic \jpsi photoproduction. And the discrepancy on the
production asymmetry between various sets of polarized gluon distribution
functions is also found to be distinctive.Comment: 14pages, 6 PS figure
Quarkonium production in SM Higgs decays
We investigate the SM Higgs decays into heavy quarkonia J/\psi and \Upsilon
in both color-singlet and color-octet mechanisms. It is found that in J/\psi
production the contribution through color-octet processes overwhelm that in
color-singlet processes all the intermediate region M_Z<M_{H^0}<2 M_w and the
fraction ratio is comparatively large, but in \Upsilon production the

The pharmaceutical use of permethrin: Sources and behavior during municipal sewage treatment

Copyright @ 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.Permethrin entered use in the 1970s as an insecticide in a wide range of applications, including agriculture, horticultural, and forestry, and has since been restricted. In the 21st century, the presence of permethrin in the aquatic environment has been attributed to its use as a human and veterinary pharmaceutical, in particular as a pedeculicide, in addition to other uses, such as a moth-proofing agent. However, as a consequence of its toxicity to fish, sources of permethrin and its fate and behavior during wastewater treatment are topics of concern. This study has established that high overall removal of permethrin (approximately 90%) was achieved during wastewater treatment and that this was strongly dependent on the extent of biological degradation in secondary treatment, with more limited subsequent removal in tertiary treatment processes. Sources of permethrin in the catchment matched well with measured values in crude sewage and indicated that domestic use accounted for more than half of the load to the treatment works. However, removal may not be consistent enough to achieve the environmental quality standards now being derived in many countries even where tertiary treatment processes are applied.United Utilities PL
Cost Analysis of the Dutch Obstetric System: low-risk nulliparous women preferring home or short-stay hospital birth - a prospective non-randomised controlled study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In the Netherlands, pregnant women without medical complications can decide where they want to give birth, at home or in a short-stay hospital setting with a midwife. However, a decrease in the home birth rate during the last decennium may have raised the societal costs of giving birth. The objective of this study is to compare the societal costs of home births with those of births in a short-stay hospital setting.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study is a cost analysis based on the findings of a multicenter prospective non-randomised study comparing two groups of nulliparous women with different preferences for where to give birth, at home or in a short-stay hospital setting. Data were collected using cost diaries, questionnaires and birth registration forms. Analysis of the data is divided into a base case analysis and a sensitivity analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the group of home births, the total societal costs associated with giving birth at home were €3,695 (per birth), compared with €3,950 per birth in the group for short-stay hospital births. Statistically significant differences between both groups were found regarding the following cost categories 'Cost of contacts with health care professionals during delivery' (€138.38 vs. €87.94, -50 (2.5-97.5 percentile range (PR)-76;-25), p < 0.05), 'cost of maternity care at home' (€1,551.69 vs. €1,240.69, -311 (PR -485; -150), p < 0.05) and 'cost of hospitalisation mother' (€707.77 vs. 959.06, 251 (PR 69;433), p < 0.05). The highest costs are for hospitalisation (41% of all costs). Because there is a relatively high amount of (partly) missing data, a sensitivity analysis was performed, in which all missing data were included in the analysis by means of general mean substitution. In the sensitivity analysis, the total costs associated with home birth are €4,364 per birth, and €4,541 per birth for short-stay hospital births.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The total costs associated with pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum care are comparable for home birth and short-stay hospital birth. The most important differences in costs between the home birth group and the short-stay hospital birth group are associated with maternity care assistance, hospitalisation, and travelling costs.</p
Construction of a Baculovirus-Silkworm Multigene Expression System and Its Application on Producing Virus-Like Particles
A new baculovirus-silkworm multigene expression system named Bombyx mori MultiBac is developed and described here, by which multiple expression cassettes can be introduced into the Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus (BmNPV) genome efficiently. The system consists of three donor vectors (pCTdual, pRADM and pUCDMIG) and an invasive diaminopimelate (DAP) auxotrophic recipient E. coli containing BmNPV-Bacmid (BmBacmid) with a homologous recombination region, an attTn7 site and a loxp site. Two genes carried by pCTdual are firstly inserted into BmBacmid by homologous recombination, while the other eight genes in pRADM and pUCDMIG are introduced into BmBacmid through Tn7 transposition and cre-loxp recombination. Then the invasive and DAP auxotrophic E. coli carrying recombinant BmBacmid is directly injected into silkworm for expressing heterologous genes in larvae or pupae. Three structural genes of rotavirus and three fluorescent genes have been simultaneously expressed in silkworm larvae using our new system, resulting in the formation of virus-like particles (VLPs) of rotavirus and the color change of larvae. The VLPs were purified from hemolymph by ultracentrifugation using CsCl gradients, with a yield of 12.7 µg per larva. For the great capacity of foreign genes and the low cost of feeding silkworm, this high efficient BmMultiBac expression system provides a suitable platform to produce VLPs or protein complexes
Discontinuous properties of current-induced magnetic domain wall depinning
The current-induced motion of magnetic domain walls (DWs) confined to nanostructures is of great interest for fundamental studies as well as for technological applications in spintronic devices. Here, we present magnetic images showing the depinning properties of pulse-current-driven domain walls in well-shaped Permalloy nanowires obtained using photoemission electron microscopy combined with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In the vicinity of the threshold current density (J th = 4.2 × 10 11 â.A.m-2) for the DW motion, discontinuous DW depinning and motion have been observed as a sequence of "Barkhausen jumps". A one-dimensional analytical model with a piecewise parabolic pinning potential has been introduced to reproduce the DW hopping between two nearest neighbour sites, which reveals the dynamical nature of the current-driven DW motion in the depinning regime
Prompt J/psi production at e^+e^- colliders
In this paper, we discuss the prompt j/psi production at e^+e^- colliders via
color-singlet and color-octet production mechanisms. The color-singlet
production processes include 1) e^+e^- to J/\psi gg; 2) e^+e^- to J/\psi
c\bar{c}; 3) e^+e^- to q \bar q ggJ/\psi and e^+e^- to q \bar q g\chi_c
followed by \chi_c to J/\psi \gamma. The color-octet production processes
include 1) e^+e^- to J/\psi g; 2) e^+e^- to j/psi q\bar q. Of all these
production channels, we find that the color-octet contributions dominate over
the color-singlet contributions at any energy scales. At low energies
(\sqrt{s}< 20 GeV), the dominant channel is e^+e^- to J/\psi g whereas at high
energies e+e^- to j/psi q\bar q will take the leading part. We also find that
the energy spectrum for the color-octet j/psi production in process e^+e^- to
j/psi q\bar q is very soft, and the mean energy of the produced j/psi is only
about 10 GeV~ 20 GeV even at very high energies (e.g. at 1000 GeV). The
extraction of color-octet matrix elements from j/psi production in e^+e^-
