Upper Bounds on Spontaneous Wave-Function Collapse Models Using Millikelvin-Cooled Nanocantilevers
6siCollapse models predict a tiny violation of energy conservation, as a consequence of the spontaneous collapse of the wave function. This property allows us to set experimental bounds on their parameters. We consider an ultrasoft magnetically tipped nanocantilever cooled to millikelvin temperature. The thermal noise of the cantilever fundamental mode has been accurately estimated in the range 0.03 – 1 K, and any other excess noise is found to be negligible within the experimental uncertainty. From the measured data and the cantilever geometry, we estimate the upper bound on the continuous spontaneous localization collapse rate in a wide range of the correlation length rC. Our upper bound improves significantly previous constraints for r_C > 10^−6  m, and partially excludes the enhanced collapse rate suggested by Adler. We discuss future improvements.openopenVinante, A.; Bahrami, M.; Bassi, A.; Usenko, O.; Wijts, G.; Oosterkamp, T.H.Vinante, A.; Bahrami, Mohammad; Bassi, Angelo; Usenko, O.; Wijts, G.; Oosterkamp, T. Determination of the complex microwave photoconductance of a single quantum dot
A small quantum dot containing approximately 20 electrons is realized in a
two-dimensional electron system of an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. Conventional
transport and microwave spectroscopy reveal the dot's electronic structure. By
applying a coherently coupled two-source technique, we are able to determine
the complex microwave induced tunnel current. The amplitude of this
photoconductance resolves photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) in the non-linear
regime through the ground state and an excited state as well. The out-of-phase
component (susceptance) allows to study charge relaxation within the quantum
dot on a time scale comparable to the microwave beat period.Comment: 5.5 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. B (Jan. B15 2001

Superposition of photon- and phonon- assisted tunneling in coupled quantum dots
We report on electron transport through an artificial molecule formed by two
tunnel coupled quantum dots, which are laterally confined in a two-dimensional
electron system of an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. Coherent
molecular states in the coupled dots are probed by photon-assisted tunneling
(PAT). Above 10 GHz, we observe clear PAT as a result of the resonance between
the microwave photons and the molecular states. Below 8 GHz, a pronounced
superposition of phonon- and photon-assisted tunneling is observed. Coherent
superposition of molecular states persists under excitation of acoustic
phonons.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Coherent transport in a two-electron quantum dot molecule
We investigate the dynamics of two interacting electrons confined to a pair
of coupled quantum dots driven by an external AC field. By numerically
integrating the two-electron Schroedinger equation in time, we find that for
certain values of the strength and frequency of the AC field we can cause the
electrons to be localised within the same dot, in spite of the Coulomb
repulsion between them. Reducing the system to an effective two-site model of
Hubbard type and applying Floquet theory leads to a detailed understanding of
this effect. This demonstrates the possibility of using appropriate AC fields
to manipulate entangled states in mesoscopic devices on extremely short
timescales, which is an essential component of practical schemes for quantum
information processing.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; the section dealing with the perturbative
treatment of the Floquet states has been substantially expanded to make it
