Heater improves cold-temperature capacity of silver-cadmium batteries
Eight heaters are included in 14-cell package to provide 14-Vdc. Each heater is 11-ohm self-adhesive strip placed across broad face of each pair of cells. They are installed before cells are wired. Heaters are in series and are connected through pair of redundant thermostats

Aircraft and satellite measurement of ocean wave directional spectra using scanning-beam microwave radars
A microwave radar technique for remotely measuring the vector wave number spectrum of the ocean surface is described. The technique, which employs short-pulse, noncoherent radars in a conical scan mode near vertical incidence, is shown to be suitable for both aircraft and satellite application, the technique was validated at 10 km aircraft altitude, where we have found excellent agreement between buoy and radar-inferred absolute wave height spectra
Scaling Symmetries of Scatterers of Classical Zero-Point Radiation
Classical radiation equilibrium (the blackbody problem) is investigated by
the use of an analogy. Scaling symmetries are noted for systems of classical
charged particles moving in circular orbits in central potentials V(r)=-k/r^n
when the particles are held in uniform circular motion against radiative
collapse by a circularly polarized incident plane wave. Only in the case of a
Coulomb potential n=1 with fixed charge e is there a unique scale-invariant
spectrum of radiation versus frequency (analogous to zero-point radiation)
obtained from the stable scattering arrangement. These results suggest that
non-electromagnetic potentials are not appropriate for discussions of classical
radiation equilibrium.Comment: 13 page
J0316+4328: a Probable "Asymmetric Double" Lens
We report a probable gravitational lens J0316+4328, one of 19 candidate
asymmetric double lenses (2 images at a high flux density ratio) from CLASS.
Observations with the Very Large Array (VLA), MERLIN and the Very Long Baseline
Array (VLBA) imply that J0316+4328 is a lens with high confidence. It has 2
images separated by 0.40", with 6 GHz flux densities of 62 mJy and 3.2 mJy. The
flux density ratio of ~19 (constant over the frequency range 6-22 GHz) is the
largest for any 2 image gravitational lens. High resolution optical imaging and
deeper VLBI maps should confirm the lensing interpretation and provide inputs
to detailed lens models. The unique configuration will give strong constraints

Finding the Pion in the Chiral Random Matrix Vacuum
The existence of a Goldstone boson is demonstrated in chiral random matrix
theory. After determining the effective coupling and calculating the scalar and
pseudoscalar propagators, a random phase approximation summation reveals the
massless pion and massive sigma modes expected whenever chiral symmetry is

Microwave radiometer experiment of soil moisture sensing at BARC test site during summer 1981
Soil moisture was measured by truck mounted microwave radiometers at the frequencies of 1.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 10.7 GHz. The soil textures in the two test sites were different so that the soil type effect of microwave radiometric response could be studied. Several fields in each test site were prepared with different surface roughnesses and vegetation covers. Ground truth on the soil moisture, temperature, and the biomass of the vegetation was acquired in support of the microwave radiometric measurements. Soil bulk density for each of the fields in both test sites was sampled. The soils in both sites were measured mechanically and chemically. A tabulation of the measured data is presented and the sensors and operational problems associated with the measurements are discussed
A survey of polarization in the JVAS/CLASS flat-spectrum radio source surveys: I. The data and catalogue production
We have used the very large JVAS/CLASS 8.4-GHz surveys of flat-spectrum radio
sources to obtain a large, uniformly observed and calibrated, sample of radio
source polarizations. These are useful for many investigations of the
properties of radio sources and the interstellar medium. We discuss comparisons
with polarization measurements from this survey and from other large-scale

Radiation Reaction fields for an accelerated dipole for scalar and electromagnetic radiation
The radiation reaction fields are calculated for an accelerated changing
dipole in scalar and electromagnetic radiation fields. The acceleration
reaction is shown to alter the damping of a time varying dipole in the EM case,
but not the scalar case. In the EM case, the dipole radiation reaction field
can exert a force on an accelerated monopole charge associated with the
accelerated dipole. The radiation reaction of an accelerated charge does not
exert a torque on an accelerated magnetic dipole, but an accelerated dipole
does exert a force on the charge. The technique used is that originally
developed by Penrose for non-singular fields and extended by the author for an
accelerated monopole charge.Comment: 11 page
