    Interpreting aggregate wage growth

    This paper analyzes the relationship between aggregate wages and individual wages when there is time series variation in employment and in the dispersion of wages. A new and easily implementable framework for the empirical analysis of aggregation biases is developed. Aggregate real wages are shown to contain three important bias terms: one associated with the dispersion of individual wages, a second reflecting the distribution of working hours, and a third deriving from compositional changes in the (selected) sample of workers. Noting the importance of these issues for recent experience in Britain, data on real wages and participation for British male workers over the period 1978-1996 are studied. A close correspondence between the estimated biases and the patterns of differences shown by aggregate wages is established. This is shown to have important implications for the interpretation of real wage growth over this period

    Experimental investigation of automotive refueling system flow and emissions dynamics to support CFD development

    2019 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.Government regulations restrict the evaporative emissions during refueling to 0.20 grams per gallon of dispensed fuel. This requires virtually all of the vapors generated and displaced while refueling to be stored onboard the vehicle. The refueling phenomenon of spit-back and early click-off are also important considerations in designing refueling systems. Spit-back is fuel bursting past the nozzle and into the environment and early click-off is the pump shutoff mechanism being triggered before the tank is full. Both are detrimental to customer satisfaction, and spit-back leads to failing government regulations. Development of a new refueling system design is required for each vehicle as packaging requirements change. Each new design (or redesign) must be prototyped and tested to ensure government regulations and customer satisfaction criteria are satisfied. Often designs need multiple iterations, costing money and time in prototype-based validation procedures. To conserve resources, it is desired to create a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tool to assist in design validation. To aid in creating such a model, controlled experiments were performed to inform and validate simulations. The simulations and experiments were performed on the same in-production refueling system. Test data provided characterization of non-trivial boundary conditions. Refueling experiments gave points of comparison for CFD results, especially the tank pressure. Finally, collection of emissions data during refueling experiments provided insight into the travel of gasoline vapor in the refueling system. All the information gathered provides greater understanding of the refueling process and will aid the continued development of CFD models for refueling

    Reaching the Top but not Feeling on Top of the World:Examining Women’s Internalized Power Threats

    More and more women are breaking the glass ceiling to obtain positions of power. Yet with this rise, some women experience threats to their power. Here we focus on women’s perceived threats to the stability of their power and the degree to which women feel they do not deserve their power positions, as reflected in their impostor feelings. The present research identifies key workplace characteristics that are associated with these internalized power threats with survey data collected among 185 women in high-power positions. We find that negative workplace experiences (i.e., gender discrimination, denigrating treatment, lack of cultural fit, and lack of mentoring) are associated with a greater sense of power threat, which in turn relates to adverse workplace outcomes (i.e., reduced job satisfaction and increased emotional exhaustion and opting-out intentions). With this unique sample of high-powered women, our findings help illustrate the forces that make women experience power as precarious, thereby shedding light on the disadvantages these women face. We provide suggestions on how to reduce women’s internalized power threats

    Anomalous strength of membranes with elastic ridges

    We report on a simulational study of the compression and buckling of elastic ridges formed by joining the boundary of a flat sheet to itself. Such ridges store energy anomalously: their resting energy scales as the linear size of the sheet to the 1/3 power. We find that the energy required to buckle such a ridge is a fixed multiple of the resting energy. Thus thin sheets with elastic ridges such as crumpled sheets are qualitatively stronger than smoothly bent sheets.Comment: 4 pages, REVTEX, 3 figure
