    Online Learning with Ensembles

Supervised online learning with an ensemble of students randomized by the choice of initial conditions is analyzed. For the case of the perceptron learning rule, asymptotically the same improvement in the generalization error of the ensemble compared to the performance of a single student is found as in Gibbs learning. For more optimized learning rules, however, using an ensemble yields no improvement. This is explained by showing that for any learning rule ff a transform f~\tilde{f} exists, such that a single student using f~\tilde{f} has the same generalization behaviour as an ensemble of ff-students.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. Trace organic contaminant removal from drinking water using local char

Chemical contamination of drinking water sources is a worldwide problem. However, few locally managed, sustainable, and low-cost on-site treatment technologies are available in rural and remote situations. Char filter-adsorbers have been used to treat drinking water for thousands of years and are still widely used today. Our laboratory studies have shown that chars derived from surplus agricultural and forestry biomass using low-cost, low-emission gasifier cookstoves and drum-ovens develop favorable sorption properties for uptake of prevalent organic contaminants such as 2,4-D herbicide, environmentally persistent pharmaceuticals sulfamethoxazole and warfarin, algal metabolite 2- methylisoborneol, and trihalomethane by-products resulting from chlorine disinfection. Based on these studies we present design recommendations for integrating char adsorbers into low-cost multi-barrier treatment trains for on-site water provision. We also present field observations and monitoring data from application of char adsorbers in Thailand and eastern Burma

Strategies for an Efficient Official Publicity Campaign

We consider the process of opinion formation, in a society where there is a set of rules B that indicates whether a social instance is acceptable. Public opinion is formed by the integration of the voters’ attitudes which can be either conservative (mostly in agreement with B) or liberal (mostly in disagreement with B and in agreement with peer voters). These attitudes are represented by stable fixed points in the phase space of the system. In this article we study the properties of a perturbative term, mimicking the effects of a publicity campaign, that pushes the system from the basin of attraction of the liberal fixed point into the basin of the conservative point, when both fixed points are equally likely

Derivation of a closed form analytical expression for fluorescence recovery after photo bleaching in the case of continuous bleaching during read out

Measurements of very slow diffusive processes in membranes, like the diffusion of integral membrane proteins, by fluorescence recovery after photo bleaching (FRAP) are hampered by bleaching of the probe during the read out of the fluorescence recovery. In the limit of long observation time (very slow diffusion as in the case of large membrane proteins), this bleaching may cause errors to the recovery function and thus provides error-prone diffusion coefficients. In this work we present a new approach to a two-dimensional closed form analytical solution of the reaction-diffusion equation, based on the addition of a dissipative term to the conventional diffusion equation. The calculation was done assuming (i) a Gaussian laser beam profile for bleaching the spot and (ii) that the fluorescence intensity profile emerging from the spot can be approximated by a two-dimensional Gaussian. The detection scheme derived from the analytical solution allows for diffusion measurements without the constraint of observation bleaching. Recovery curves of experimental FRAP data obtained under non-negligible read-out bleaching for native membranes (rabbit endoplasmic reticulum) on a planar solid support showed excellent agreement with the analytical solution and allowed the calculation of the lipid diffusion coefficient
