Effects of zinc oxide filler on the curing and mechanical response of alkyd coatings
The mechanical properties of an alkyd resin filled with zinc oxide pigment were studied at different concentrations over a wide range of time scales using dynamic mechanical analysis, quartz crystal rheometry and nanoindentation. The motivation for this work stems from the interest in accessing the long-term properties of paint coatings by studying the mechanical properties of historic paints. In this foundational work, we compare three different modalities of mechanical measurements and systematically determine the effect of pigment filler loading on the measured properties. Quantitative agreement between the methods is obtained when the characteristic time scales of each of the methods is taken into account. While nanoindentation is the technique most readily applied to historic paint samples, the rheometric quartz crystal microbalance (rheo-QCM) is the best suited for obtaining mechanistic information from measurements of paint properties over time, provided that appropriate thin-film samples can be produced. In these studies we find that ZnO increases the rate of oxidation of the alkyd during the initial stages of cure by an amount that depends on the ZnO content
Advanced modulation technology development for earth station demodulator applications
The purpose of this contract was to develop a high rate (200 Mbps), bandwidth efficient, modulation format using low cost hardware, in 1990's technology. The modulation format chosen is 16-ary continuous phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK). The implementation of the modulation format uses a unique combination of a limiter/discriminator followed by an accumulator to determine transmitted phase. An important feature of the modulation scheme is the way coding is applied to efficiently gain back the performance lost by the close spacing of the phase points
The Population of Tiny Near-Earth Objects Observed by NEOWISE
Only a very small fraction of the asteroid population at size scales
comparable to the object that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia has been
discovered to date, and physical properties are poorly characterized. We
present previously unreported detections of 106 close approaching near-Earth
objects (NEOs) by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mission's NEOWISE
project. These infrared observations constrain physical properties such as
diameter and albedo for these objects, many of which are found to be smaller
than 100 m. Because these objects are intrinsically faint, they were detected
by WISE during very close approaches to the Earth, often at large apparent
on-sky velocities. We observe a trend of increasing albedo with decreasing
size, but as this sample of NEOs was discovered by visible light surveys, it is
likely that selection biases against finding small, dark NEOs influence this
finding.Comment: Accepted to Ap
Multiple Application Propfan Study (MAPS): Advanced tactical transport
This study was conducted to ascertain potential benefits of a propfan propulsion system application to a blended wing/body military tactical transport. Based on a design cruise Mach no. of 0.75 for the design mission, the results indicate a significant advantage in various figures of merit for the propfan over those of a comparable technology turbofan. Although the propfan has a 1.6 percent greater takeoff gross weight, its life cycle cost is 5.3 percent smaller, partly because of a 27 percent smaller specific fuel consumption. When employed on alternate missions, the propfan configuration offers significantly improved flexibility and capability: an increase in sea level penetration distance of more than 100 percent, or in time-on-station of 24 percent, or in deployment payload of 38 percent
Long-term changes in acidification and recovery at nine calibrated catchments in Norway, Sweden and Finland
International agreements to reduce the emissions of acidifying pollutants have resulted in major changes in deposition of sulphur and nitrogen in southern Scandinavia over the past 25 years. Long-term monitoring of deposition and run-off chemistry over the past 12-25 years at nine small calibrated catchments in Finland, Norway and Sweden provide the basis for analysis of trends with special attention to recovery in response to decreased sulphur and nitrogen deposition in the 1980s and 1990s. During the 1980s and 1990s sulphate deposition in the region decreased by 30 to 60%, whereas inorganic nitrogen deposition showed very little change until the mid-1990s. Deposition of non-marine base cations (especially calcium) declined in the 1990s most markedly in southern Finland. Run-off response to these changes in deposition has been rapid and clear at the nine catchments. Sulphate and base cations (mostly calcium) concentrations declined and acid neutralising capacity increased. Occasional years with unusually high inputs of sea-salt confound the general trends. Trends at all the catchments show the same general picture as that from small lakes in Scandinavia and in acid-sensitive waters elsewhere in Europe.

Keywords: acidification, recovery, Scandinavia, catchment, trend analysi
Measuring patient-perceived quality of care in US hospitals using Twitter
BACKGROUND: Patients routinely use Twitter to share feedback about their experience receiving healthcare. Identifying and analysing the content of posts sent to hospitals may provide a novel real-time measure of quality, supplementing traditional, survey-based approaches. OBJECTIVE: To assess the use of Twitter as a supplemental data stream for measuring patient-perceived quality of care in US hospitals and compare patient sentiments about hospitals with established quality measures. DESIGN: 404 065 tweets directed to 2349 US hospitals over a 1-year period were classified as having to do with patient experience using a machine learning approach. Sentiment was calculated for these tweets using natural language processing. 11 602 tweets were manually categorised into patient experience topics. Finally, hospitals with ≥50 patient experience tweets were surveyed to understand how they use Twitter to interact with patients. KEY RESULTS: Roughly half of the hospitals in the US have a presence on Twitter. Of the tweets directed toward these hospitals, 34 725 (9.4%) were related to patient experience and covered diverse topics. Analyses limited to hospitals with ≥50 patient experience tweets revealed that they were more active on Twitter, more likely to be below the national median of Medicare patients (p<0.001) and above the national median for nurse/patient ratio (p=0.006), and to be a non-profit hospital (p<0.001). After adjusting for hospital characteristics, we found that Twitter sentiment was not associated with Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) ratings (but having a Twitter account was), although there was a weak association with 30-day hospital readmission rates (p=0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Tweets describing patient experiences in hospitals cover a wide range of patient care aspects and can be identified using automated approaches. These tweets represent a potentially untapped indicator of quality and may be valuable to patients, researchers, policy makers and hospital administrators
Effect of next-nearest neighbor coupling on the optical spectra in bilayer graphene
We investigate the dependence of the optical conductivity of bilayer graphene
(BLG) on the intra- and inter-layer interactions using the most complete model
to date. We show that the next nearest-neighbor intralayer coupling introduces
new features in the low-energy spectrum that are highly sensitive to sample
doping, changing significantly the ``universal'' conductance. Further, its
interplay with interlayer couplings leads to an anisotropy in conductance in
the ultraviolet range. We propose that experimental measurement of the optical
conductivity of intrinsic and doped BLG will provide a good benchmark for the
relative importance of intra- and inter-layer couplings at different doping
levels.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Main Belt Asteroids with WISE/NEOWISE I: Preliminary Albedos and Diameters
We present initial results from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer
(WISE), a four-band all-sky thermal infrared survey that produces data well
suited to measuring the physical properties of asteroids, and the NEOWISE
enhancement to the WISE mission allowing for detailed study of Solar system
objects. Using a NEATM thermal model fitting routine we compute diameters for
over 100,000 Main Belt asteroids from their IR thermal flux, with errors better
than 10%. We then incorporate literature values of visible measurements (in the
form of the H absolute magnitude) to determine albedos. Using these data we
investigate the albedo and diameter distributions of the Main Belt. As observed
previously, we find a change in the average albedo when comparing the inner,
middle, and outer portions of the Main Belt. We also confirm that the albedo
distribution of each region is strongly bimodal. We observe groupings of
objects with similar albedos in regions of the Main Belt associated with
dynamical breakup families. Asteroid families typically show a characteristic
albedo for all members, but there are notable exceptions to this. This paper is
the first look at the Main Belt asteroids in the WISE data, and only represents
the preliminary, observed raw size and albedo distributions for the populations
considered. These distributions are subject to survey biases inherent to the
NEOWISE dataset and cannot yet be interpreted as describing the true
populations; the debiased size and albedo distributions will be the subject of
the next paper in this series.Comment: Accepted to ApJ. Online table to also appear on the publisher's

N-body Gravity and the Schroedinger Equation
We consider the problem of the motion of bodies in a self-gravitating
system in two spacetime dimensions. We point out that this system can be mapped
onto the quantum-mechanical problem of an N-body generalization of the problem
of the H molecular ion in one dimension. The canonical gravitational
N-body formalism can be extended to include electromagnetic charges. We derive
a general algorithm for solving this problem, and show how it reduces to known
results for the 2-body and 3-body systems.Comment: 15 pages, Latex, references added, typos corrected, final version

Optical Technologies for UV Remote Sensing Instruments
Over the last decade significant advances in technology have made possible development of instruments with substantially improved efficiency in the UV spectral region. In the area of optical coatings and materials, the importance of recent developments in chemical vapor deposited (CVD) silicon carbide (SiC) mirrors, SiC films, and multilayer coatings in the context of ultraviolet instrumentation design are discussed. For example, the development of chemically vapor deposited (CVD) silicon carbide (SiC) mirrors, with high ultraviolet (UV) reflectance and low scatter surfaces, provides the opportunity to extend higher spectral/spatial resolution capability into the 50-nm region. Optical coatings for normal incidence diffraction gratings are particularly important for the evolution of efficient extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrographs. SiC films are important for optimizing the spectrograph performance in the 90 nm spectral region. The performance evaluation of the flight optical components for the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) instrument, a spectroscopic instrument to fly aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission, designed to study dynamic processes, temperatures, and densities in the plasma of the upper atmosphere of the Sun in the wavelength range from 50 nm to 160 nm, is discussed. The optical components were evaluated for imaging and scatter in the UV. The performance evaluation of SOHO/CDS (Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer) flight gratings tested for spectral resolution and scatter in the DGEF is reviewed and preliminary results on resolution and scatter testing of Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) technology development diffraction gratings are presented
