    Synthesis and Photocatalytic Activity for Toluene Removal of CDs/TiO2 - Zeolite Y

    Hydrothermally synthesized carbon nanodots (CDs) were impregnated on TiO2. The product (CDs/TiO2) was mechanically mixed with zeolite Y for application in toluene photocatalytic oxidation reaction under UV radiation. Material properties of the samples were investigated by different methods. Toluene vapor was chosen as a typical volatile organic compound to investigate the performance of CDs/TiO2 – zeolite Y photocatalyst when these technological parameters were changed: toluene concentration, gas flow rate, humidity and UV light intensity. In each reaction, only one parameter was changed and the remaining conditions were fixed. The toluene concentrations at the beginning and the end of each reaction were analyzed with the use of gas chromatography (GC). The results of different reaction conditions show the trends for toluene treatment of the CDs/TiO2 – zeolite Y catalyst, thereby providing specific explanations for these trends. The experiments also show that toluene removal is highest when the toluene concentration in the inlet gas is 314 ppmv, the flow rate is 3 L/h, the humidity is 60%, and the catalyst (CDs/TiO2 – zeolite Y composite with 70% zeolite in weight) is illuminated by 4 UV lamps.     Probiotic Beverage From Pineapple Juice Fermented With Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium Strains

    Pineapple is an economically significant plant and the third most important fruit crop in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In this study, fermentation of pineapple juice with probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains as well as changes of some properties in the beverage during storage were investigated. All tested strains exhibited good growth properties on pineapple juice without supplementation of any nutrient compounds. After 24 h fermentation, the cell counts of lactobacilli passed the level of 5*109 cfu/ml, while the cell number of bifidobacteria reached a level of 109 cfu/ml. The highest volumetric productivity (3.5*108 cfu/ml*h) was observed in L. plantarum 299V. The ratios of lactic acids to acetic acids in the cases of L. plantarum 299V and L. acidophilus La5 were 5.37 and 9.91, respectively. In the case of B. lactis Bb-12, the concentrations of lactic acid and acetic acid were 6 mM and 23 mM in natural juices, and 15 and 21 mM in the case of supplementation with prebiotics at the 16th h of fermentation, respectively. Additionally, supplementation with prebiotics at the initiation of fermentation resulted 7 mM lactic acid and 23 mM acetic acid at the end of fermentation. Fructose was the most preferred sugar for both lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Both total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity increased slightly during fermentation and dropped during the storage period. The microbial population did not change significantly during the first month of storage. After the storage period (2 months), the probiotic bacteria lost about 0.11 log cfu/ml viability after treatment with 0.3% pepsin for 135 min, and a further 0.1 log cfu/ml after treatment with 0.6% bile salts. These values were 10 times higher than data from the fresh fermented pineapple juice. Our results are very promising and may serve as a good base for developing probiotic pineapple juice

    Building the hospital event-based surveillance system in Viet Nam: a qualitative study to identify potential facilitators and barriers for event reporting

    Introduction: Hospitals are a key source of information for the early identification of emerging disease outbreaks and acute public health events for risk assessment, decision-making, and public health response. The objectives of this study were to identify potential facilitators and barriers for reporting of unusual events from the curative sector to the preventive medicine system in Viet Nam. Methods: In 2016, we conducted 18 semi-structured in-depth interviews and 9 focus group discussions with representatives from the curative and preventive medicine sectors in four provinces. We transcribed the interviews and focus group discussions and conducted a thematic analysis of the factors that appeared to affect public health event reporting. Results: We identified five major themes. Firstly, the lack of a legal framework to guide reporting meant there was an over-reliance on internal procedures. Secondly, participants reported the importance of an enabling environment to facilitate reporting such as leadership support and having focal points for reporting. Thirdly, potential benefits for reporting were seen such as support during outbreaks and receiving feedback. Fourthly, some challenges prohibited timely reporting such as not perceiving reporting to be the task of the curative sector and hesitancy to report without laboratory confirmation. Finally, the limited resources and specialist capacities in remote areas hindered timely detection and reporting of unusual events. Discussion: This study identified potential opportunities to promote the detection and reporting of unusual events from health care workers to the public health sector, and thus improving the overall health security system in Viet Nam and beyond

    Prevalence and correlates of zinc deficiency in pregnant Vietnamese women in Ho Chi Minh City

    Background: Although Vietnam is a region with a plant-based diet that has a high zinc deficiency, epidemiological data showing how this affects pregnant women are limited. This study explores the prevalence of zinc deficiency and possible correlates in pregnant Vietnamese women in Ho Chi Minh City. Methods: This was a crosssectional study conducted at a general hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. All pregnant women who came to their first antenatal care visit from November 2011 to June 2012 were recruited. Those taking a vitamin and/or mineral supplement were excluded. Serum zinc concentrations, determined by a standard colorimetric method, of 10.7 mol/L-17.5 mol/L (70.0 g/dL-114 g/dL) were classified as normal and under 10.7 mol/L (70.0 g/dL) as zinc deficient. Results: In total, 254 pregnant women were invited and 107 (42%) participated. The mean age of participants was 29 years, and mean gestational age was 10 weeks. Median zinc concentration in serum was 13.6 mol/L, and the prevalence of zinc deficiency was 29% (95% CI=21%-39%). The daily intake of a milk product supplement was the only significant correlate of zinc deficiency of the items investigated (adjusted OR=0.40, p=0.049). Discussion: This is the first study reporting that more than 25% of pregnant Vietnamese women in Ho Chi Minh City are zinc deficient. Further academic and clinical input is needed to confirm the scale of this neglected issue and to investigate the potential of milk product supplementation in this population

    Number and timing of antenatal HIV testing: Evidence from a community-based study in Northern Vietnam

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>HIV testing for pregnant women is an important component for the success of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). A lack of antenatal HIV testing results in loss of benefits for HIV-infected mothers and their children. However, the provision of unnecessary repeat tests at a very late stage of pregnancy will reduce the beneficial effects of PMTCT and impose unnecessary costs for the individual woman as well as the health system. This study aims to assess the number and timing of antenatal HIV testing in a low-income setting where PMTCT programmes have been scaled up to reach first level health facilities.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional community-based study was conducted among 1108 recently delivered mothers through face-to-face interviews following a structured questionnaire that focused on socio-economic characteristics, experiences of antenatal care and HIV testing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of women who lacked HIV testing among the study group was 10% while more than half of the women tested had had more than two tests during pregnancy. The following factors were associated with the lack of antenatal HIV test: having two children (aOR 2.1, 95% CI 1.3-3.4), living in a remote rural area (aOR 7.8, 95% CI 3.4-17.8), late antenatal care attendance (aOR 3.6, 95% CI 1.3-10.1) and not being informed about PMTCT at their first antenatal care visits (aOR 7.4, 95% CI 2.6-21.1). Among women who had multiple tests, 80% had the second test after 36 weeks of gestation. Women who had first ANC and first HIV testing at health facilities at primary level were more likely to be tested multiple times (OR 2.9 95% CI 1.9-4.3 and OR = 4.7 95% CI 3.5-6.4), respectively.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Not having an HIV test during pregnancy was associated with poor socio-economic characteristics among the women and with not receiving information about PMTCT at the first ANC visit. Multiple testing during pregnancy prevailed; the second tests were often provided at a late stage of gestation.</p

    A multi-institutional retrospective pooled outcome analysis of molecularly annotated pediatric supratentorial ZFTA-fused ependymoma

    BACKGROUND ZFTA-RELA (formerly known as c11orf-RELA) fused supratentorial ependymoma (ZFTAfus ST-EPN) has been recognized as a novel entity in the 2016 WHO classification of CNS tumors and further defined in the recent 2021 edition. ZFTAfus ST-EPN was reported to portend poorer prognosis when compared to its counterpart, YAP1 ST-EPN in some previously published series. The aim of this study was to determine the treatment outcome of molecularly confirmed and conventionally treated ZFTAfus ST-EPN patients treated in multiple institutions. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis of all pediatric patients with molecularly confirmed ZFTAfus ST-EPN patients treated in multiple institutions in 5 different countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, and Czechia). Survival outcomes were analyzed and correlated with clinical characteristics and treatment approaches. RESULTS A total of 108 patients were collated from multiple institutions in 5 different countries across three continents. We found across the entire cohort that the 5- and 10-year PFS were 65% and 63%, respectively. The 5- and 10-year OS of this cohort of patients were 87% and 73%. The rates of gross total resection (GTR) were high with 84 out of 108 (77.8%) patients achieving GTR. The vast majority of patients also received post-operative radiotherapy, 98 out of 108 (90.7%). Chemotherapy did not appear to provide any survival benefit in our patient cohort. CONCLUSION This is the largest study to date of contemporaneously treated molecularly confirmed ZFTAfus ST-EPN patients which identified markedly improved survival outcomes compared to previously published series. This study also re-emphasizes the importance of maximal surgical resection in achieving optimal outcomes in pediatric patients with supratentorial ependymoma
