Can Frustration Preserve a Quasi-Two-Dimensional Spin Fluid?

Using spin-wave theory, we show that geometric frustration fails to preserve a two-dimensional spin fluid. Even though frustration can remove the interlayer coupling in the ground-state of a classical anti-ferromagnet, spin layers innevitably develop a quantum-mechanical coupling via the mechanism of ``order from disorder''. We show how the order from disorder coupling mechanism can be viewed as a result of magnon pair tunneling, a process closely analogous to pair tunneling in the Josephson effect. In the spin system, the Josephson coupling manifests itself as a a biquadratic spin coupling between layers, and for quantum spins, these coupling terms are as large as the inplane coupling. An alternative mechanism for decoupling spin layers occurs in classical XY models in which decoupled "sliding phases" of spin fluid can form in certain finely tuned conditions. Unfortunately, these finely tuned situations appear equally susceptible to the strong-coupling effects of quantum tunneling, forcing us to conclude that in general, geometric frustration cannot preserve a two-dimensional spin fluid.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

Dissipate locally, couple globally: a sharp transition from decoupling to infinite range coupling in Josephson arrays with on-site dissipation

We study the T=0 normal to superconducting transition of Josephson arrays with {\it on-site} dissipation. A perturbative renormalization group solution is given. Like the previously studied case of {\it bond} dissipation (BD), this is a "floating" to coupled (FC) phase transition. {\it Unlike} the BD transition, at which {\it only} nearest-neighbor couplings become relevant, here {\it all} inter-grain couplings, out to {\it infinitely} large distances, do so simultaneously. We predict, for the first time in an FC transition, a diverging spatial correlation length. Our results show the robustness of floating phases in dissipative quantum systems.Comment: 7+ pages, 3 eps figures, Europhysics Letters preprint format, as publishe

Effect of the state of stress on the strain-induced martensite formation in 03Kh14N11K5M2YuT steel

The structural changes that occur in a metastable austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni-based steel during cold plastic deformation by drawing and tension are analyzed. A relation between the structure of the steel and its mechanical and magnetic properties is established. It is concluded that the stress state scheme considerably affects the rate of martensite formation. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd

Personal non-property rights are considered, which are the most important component in a person’s life, relate to moral values, occupy the highest place in the system of spiritual values, play a large role in the life of an individual person and society as a whole

Elucidation of the Origin of nOes or rOes That Show the Hydration in the Minor and Major Grooves of DNA duplex with ATTAAT tract by a Combination of NOESY and ROESY Experiments

Abstract. A combination of NOESY and ROESY experiments (using ammonia as a catalyst across the pH range of 5 to 8.6) has given us a clear understanding regarding the origin of nOes that are attributed to the stereochemical location and the residence time of water in the major and the minor grooves of d 5' ( 1 C 2 C 3 A 4 T 5 T 6 A 7 A 8 T 9 G 10 G) 2 3' duplex Our conclusions are the following: (i) In the major groove, the presence of ammonia in the buffer does not influence on the process of exchange between bound and bulk water. (ii) It has been found that the observation of the bound water in the minor groove is a result of straight dipole-dipole effect at the physiological pH. (iii) The residence time of water near H2 of adenine (H2A) in the minor groove has been estimated to be in the range of 0.3 -0.5ns, which is closer to the residence time of the bound water found on the surface of protein. (iv) The hydration pattern in the minor groove in the physiological pH, under our NMR measurement condition, is similar to the ones found in the X-ray structure. (v) It has been shown that at pH > 8.0 the nOe/rOe intensities of the water-H2A crosspeaks dramatically increase due to dipole-dipole and/or relayed magnetization transfer from H2A to water through ammonia catalyst. The nuclear Overhauser effect based NMR experiments have proved to be sensitive and efficient tool to identify sequentially assigned protein and DNA/RNA protons that have nOe/rOe interactions with nearby water protons [1

Vertical farms in the context of sustainable development

The article analyzes some of the fundamental aspects of sustainable development of cities, connected in many respects with the concept of ecological architecture. One of the main concepts of sustainability is considered in detail: the city as an eco-sustainable and balanced system, objects of architecture as a full-fledged part of this system, which, most likely, will be determined by one of the directions of this development - the development of landscape architecture as an instrument of integration of nature into the urban environment. At the same time, the variety of its functional forms and architectural methods in the system of organization of internal and external space is outlined, as well as its interrelation with energy-saving architecture, which defines them as the two most important components of eco-sustainable development. Forms of development of landscape architecture are considered in the review of analogs, as an example (an object of agricultural urbanism) a thesis on the topic of "The Vertical Farm Agroindustrial Complex" is presented
