    Enhancement of electronic anomalies in iron-substituted La_2-x_Sr_x_Cu_1-y_Fe_y_O_4_ around x=0.22

    We have measured the temperature dependences of Rho and Chi for Fe-substituted La_2-x_Sr_x_Cu_1-y_Fe_y_O_4_ in the overdoped regime, in order to investigate Fe-substitution effects on electronic properties around x=0.22. From the Rho measurements, it has been found around x=0.22 that the values of Rho are large at room temperature and that Rho exhibits a pronounced upturn at low temperatures. Moreover, from the Rho and Chi measurements, it has been found that T_c_ is anomalously depressed around x=0.22. These results indicate that the electronic anomalies around x=0.22 are enhanced by Fe substitution, which might be related to the development of stripe correlations by Fe substitution.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Electrical reduction of perovskite electrodes for accelerating exsolution of nanoparticles

    This work was supported through the Leading Graduate School Program: Academy for Co-creative Education of Environment and Energy Science (ACEEES) funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT, Japan).Growth of finely dispersed nanocatalysts by exsolution of metal nanoparticles from perovskite oxides under reducing conditions at elevated temperature is a promising approach of producing highly active catalytic materials. An alternative method of exsolution using an applied potential has been recently shown to potentially accelerate the exsolution process of nanoparticles that can be achieved in minutes rather than the hours required in chemical reduction. In the present study, we investigate exsolution of nanoparticles from perovskite oxides of La0.43Ca0.37Ni0.06Ti0.94O3-γ (LCTNi) and La0.43Ca0.37Ni0.03Fe0.03Ti0.94O3-γ (LCTNi-Fe) under applied potentials in carbon dioxide atmosphere. The impedance spectra of single cells measured before and after electrochemical poling at varying voltages showed that the onset of exsolution process occurred at 2 V of potential reduction. An average particle size of the exsolved nanoparticles observed after testing using a scanning electron microscopy was about 30–100 nm. The cells with the reduced electrodes exhibited desirable electrochemical performances not only in pure carbon dioxide (current density of 0.37 A cm−2 for LCTNi and 0.48 A cm−2 for LCTNi-Fe at 1.5 V) but also in dry hydrogen (0.36 W cm−2 for LCTNi and 0.43 W cm−2 for LCTNi-Fe).PostprintPeer reviewe

    Engineered Heart Tissue: A Novel Tool to Study the Ischemic Changes of the Heart In Vitro

    Background: Understanding the basic mechanisms and prevention of any disease pattern lies mainly on development of a successful experimental model. Recently, engineered heart tissue (EHT) has been demonstrated to be a useful tool in experimental transplantation. Here, we demonstrate a novel function for the spontaneously contracting EHT as an experimental model in studying the acute ischemia-induced changes in vitro. Methodology/Principal Findings: EHT was constructed by mixing cardiomyocytes isolated from the neonatal rats and cultured in a ring-shaped scaffold for five days. This was followed by mechanical stretching of the EHT for another one week under incubation. Fully developed EHT was subjected to hypoxia with 1 % O2 for 6 hours after treating them with cell protective agents such as cyclosporine A (CsA) and acetylcholine (ACh). During culture, EHT started to show spontaneous contractions that became more synchronous following mechanical stretching. This was confirmed by the increased expression of gap junctional protein connexin 43 and improved action potential recordings using an optical mapping system after mechanical stretching. When subjected to hypoxia, EHT demonstrated conduction defects, dephosphorylation of connexin-43, and down-regulation of cell survival proteins identical to the adult heart. These effects were inhibited by treating the EHT with cell protective agents. Conclusions/Significance: Under hypoxic conditions, the EHT responds similarly to the adult myocardium, thus making EHT a promising material for the study of cardiac functions in vitro

    CXCR2 deficient mice display macrophage-dependent exaggerated acute inflammatory responses

    CXCR2 is an essential regulator of neutrophil recruitment to inflamed and damaged sites and plays prominent roles in inflammatory pathologies and cancer. It has therefore been highlighted as an important therapeutic target. However the success of the therapeutic targeting of CXCR2 is threatened by our relative lack of knowledge of its precise in vivo mode of action. Here we demonstrate that CXCR2-deficient mice display a counterintuitive transient exaggerated inflammatory response to cutaneous and peritoneal inflammatory stimuli. In both situations, this is associated with reduced expression of cytokines associated with the resolution of the inflammatory response and an increase in macrophage accumulation at inflamed sites. Analysis using neutrophil depletion strategies indicates that this is a consequence of impaired recruitment of a non-neutrophilic CXCR2 positive leukocyte population. We suggest that these cells may be myeloid derived suppressor cells. Our data therefore reveal novel and previously unanticipated roles for CXCR2 in the orchestration of the inflammatory response

    Extended Hemi-Hepatectomy with Portal Vein Reconstruction in a Patient with Situs Ambiguous

    We report a case of far-advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with situs ambiguous, complex visceral and vascular anomalies, who was successfully managed by extended hemi-hepatectomy. A 67-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a large liver mass. Abdominal ultrasonography, computed tomography and angiography revealed HCC with a diameter of 10 cm, with tumor thrombus in the main and first branch of the portal vein. Multiple complex anomalies in the abdomen were determined preoperatively. He had right-sided spleens-stomach-duodenum, liver at midline, inferior vena cava interruption with azygous continuation, and hepatic arterial anomaly. Extended left lobectomy of the liver with reconstruction of the portal vein was performed. Postoperatively, the patient recovered without major complications, and he was discharged on postoperative day 21. We report the first successful extended hepatectomy with portal vein reconstruction for HCC in a patient with rare situs anomalies

    Genetic diversity of Brazilian isolates of feline immunodeficiency virus

    We isolated Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) from three adult domestic cats, originating from two open shelters in Brazil. Viruses were isolated from PBMC following co-cultivation with the feline T-lymphoblastoid cell line MYA-1. All amplified env gene products were cloned directly into pGL8MYA. The nucleic acid sequences of seven clones were determined and then compared with those of previously described isolates. The sequences of all of the Brazilian virus clones were distinct and phylogenetic analysis revealed that all belong to subtype B. Three variants isolated from one cat and two variants were isolated from each of the two other cats, indicating that intrahost diversity has the potential to pose problems for the treatment and diagnosis of FIV infection
