    Lifetime measurements of Triaxial Strongly Deformed bands in 163^{163}Tm

    With the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, quadrupole transition moments, QtQ_t, were determined for the two recently proposed Triaxial Strongly Deformed (TSD) bands in 163^{163}Tm. The measured QtQ_t moments indicate that the deformation of these bands is larger than that of the yrast, signature partners. However, the measured values are smaller than those predicted by theory.     Relativistic Mean Field Theory in the rotating frame is used to describe superdeformed nuclei. Nuclear currents and the resulting spatial components of the vector meson fields are fully taken into account.     MWC 656 is unlikely to contain a black hole

    Context. MWC 656 was reported as the first known Be star with a black-hole (BH) companion in a 60 d period. The mass of the proposed BH companion is estimated to be between 4 - 7 MSun. This estimate is based on radial velocity (RV) measurements derived from the Fe ii 4583 emission line of the Be star disc and from the He ii 4686 emission line, assumed to be formed in a disc around the putative BH. Aims. Using new high-resolution spectroscopic data, we investigate whether MWC 656 truly contains a BH. Methods. We used the cross-correlation method to calculate the RVs of both the Be star and the He ii 4686 emission line and we derive a new orbital solution. We also performed disentangling to look for the spectral signature of a companion. Results. We derive an orbital period of 59.028 +- 0.011 d and a mass ratio q = M_Heii/M_Be = 0.12 +- 0.03, much lower than the previously reported q = 0.41 +- 0.07. Adopting a mass of the Be star of M_Be = 7.8 +- 2.0MSun, the companion has a mass of 0.94 +- 0.34MSun. For the upper limit of M_Be = 16MSun and q = 0.15, the companion has a mass 2.4MSun. Performing disentangling on mock spectra shows that the spectral signature of a non-degenerate stellar companion with such a low mass cannot be retrieved using our data. Conclusions. Our measurements do not support the presence of a BH companion in MWC 656. The derived upper limit on the mass of the companion rather indicates that it is a neutron star, a white dwarf, or a hot helium star.     How to measure the need for transition to adult services among young people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD): a comparison of surveillance versus case note review methods

The final version is available from BioMed Central via the DOI in this recordBackground: Health services have not provided adequate support for young people with long term health conditions to transfer from child to adult services. National Institute of Health and Care (NICE) guidance on transition has been issued to address these gaps. However, data are often sparse about the number of young adults who might need to transition. Using Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as an exemplar, this study used an existing surveillance system and a case note review to capture the incidence of the transition process, and compared and contrasted the findings. Methods: The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Surveillance System (CAPSS) was used to estimate the incident transition of young people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) from child to adult services. This involves consultant child and adolescent psychiatrists from the United Kingdom (UK) and Republic of Ireland (ROI) reporting relevant young people as they are seen in clinics. In parallel, a case note review was conducted using the Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Clinical Records Interactive Search (CRIS). The study period ran for twelve months with a nine month follow up to see how the transition proceeded. Results: CRIS identified 76 cases in the study period, compared to 18 identified using surveillance via CAPSS. Methodological issues were experienced using both methods. Surveillance issues; eligibility criteria confusion, reporting errors, incomplete questionnaires, difficulties contacting clinicians, and surveillance systems do not cover non-doctors and psychiatrists who are not consultants. Case note review issues using CRIS included the need for researchers to interpret clinical notes, the availability and completeness of data in the notes, and data limited to the catchment of one particular mental health trust. Conclusions: Both methods demonstrate strengths and weaknesses; the combination of both methods in the absence of strong routinely collected data, allowed a more robust estimate of the level of need for service planning and commissioning.National Institute for Health Researc

    Nature of yrast excitations near N=40: Level structure of Ni-67

    Excited states in Ni-67 were populated in deep-inelastic reactions of a Ni-64 beam at 430 MeV on a thick U-238 target. A level scheme built on the previously known 13 micro-s isomer has been delineated up to an excitation energy of ~5.3 MeV and a tentative spin and parity of (21/2-). Shell model calculations have been carried out using two effective interactions in the f5/2pg9/2 model space with a Ni-56 core. Satisfactory agreement between experiment and theory is achieved for the measured transition energies and branching ratios. The calculations indicate that the yrast states are associated with rather complex configurations, herewith demonstrating the relative weakness of the N=40 subshell gap and the importance of multi particle-hole excitations involving the g9/2 neutron orbital.Comment: Accepted by Physical Review

    In-beam spectroscopy of medium- and high-spin states in 133^{133}Ce

    Medium and high-spin states in 133^{133}Ce were investigated using the 116^{116}Cd(22^{22}Ne, 5n5n) reaction and the Gammasphere array. The level scheme was extended up to an excitation energy of ∼22.8\sim22.8 MeV and spin 93/2 . Eleven bands of quadrupole transitions and two new dipole bands are identified. The connections to low-lying states of the previously known, high-spin triaxial bands were firmly established, thus fixing the excitation energy and, in many cases, the spin parity of the levels. Based on comparisons with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations and tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory, it is shown that all observed bands are characterized by pronounced triaxiality. Competing multiquasiparticle configurations are found to contribute to a rich variety of collective phenomena in this nucleus.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figure
