An Evaluation of Non-Stochastic Lattice Structures Fabricated Via Electron Beam Melting
Metal foam structures have many applications and can be used as structural supports, heat
exchangers, shock absorbers, and implant materials. Stochastic metal foams having different cell
sizes and densities have been commercially available for a number of years. This paper addresses
a different type of foams which are known as non-stochastic foams, or lattice structures. These
foams have a well defined repeating unit cell structure rather than the random cell structure in
commercially available stochastic foams. The paper reports on preliminary research on the
fabrication of non-stochastic Ti-6Al-4V alloy foams using the Electron Beam Melting process.
Behavior of the structures in compression, bending, and low cycle repeating load tests are
discussed, and recommendations about cell geometry and processing conditions are made.Mechanical Engineerin
Representations of G+++ and the role of space-time
We consider the decomposition of the adjoint and fundamental representations
of very extended Kac-Moody algebras G+++ with respect to their regular A type
subalgebra which, in the corresponding non-linear realisation, is associated
with gravity. We find that for many very extended algebras almost all the A
type representations that occur in the decomposition of the fundamental
representations also occur in the adjoint representation of G+++. In
particular, for E8+++, this applies to all its fundamental representations.
However, there are some important examples, such as An+++, where this is not
true and indeed the adjoint representation contains no generator that can be
identified with a space-time translation. We comment on the significance of
these results for how space-time can occur in the non-linear realisation based
on G+++. Finally we show that there is a correspondence between the A
representations that occur in the fundamental representation associated with
the very extended node and the adjoint representation of G+++ which is
consistent with the interpretation of the former as charges associated with
brane solutions.Comment: 45 pages, 9 figures, 9 tables, te
Sub-Cycle Optical Response Caused by Dressed State with Phase-Locked Wavefunctions
The coherent interaction of light with matter imprints the phase information
of the light field on the wavefunction of the photon-dressed electronic state.
Driving electric field, together with a stable phase that is associated with
the optical probe pulses, enables the role of the dressed state in the optical
response to be investigated. We observed optical absorption strengths modulated
on a sub-cycle timescale in a GaAs quantum well in the presence of a
multi-cycle terahertz driving pulse using a near-infrared probe pulse. The
measurements were in good agreement with the analytical formula that accounts
for the optical susceptibilities caused by the dressed state of excitons, which
indicates that the output probe intensity was coherently reshaped by the
excitonic sideband emissions
Zero differential resistance in two-dimensional electron systems at large filling factors
We report on a state characterized by a zero differential resistance observed
in very high Landau levels of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system.
Emerging from a minimum of Hall field-induced resistance oscillations at low
temperatures, this state exists over a continuous range of magnetic fields
extending well below the onset of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect. The minimum
current required to support this state is largely independent on the magnetic
field, while the maximum current increases with the magnetic field tracing the
onset of inter-Landau level scattering
Construction of N = 2 Chiral Supergravity Compatible with the Reality Condition
We construct N = 2 chiral supergravity (SUGRA) which leads to Ashtekar's
canonical formulation. The supersymmetry (SUSY) transformation parameters are
not constrained at all and auxiliary fields are not required in contrast with
the method of the two-form gravity. We also show that our formulation is
compatible with the reality condition, and that its real section is reduced to
the usual N = 2 SUGRA up to an imaginary boundary term.Comment: 16 pages, late
Gradient Representations and Affine Structures in AE(n)
We study the indefinite Kac-Moody algebras AE(n), arising in the reduction of
Einstein's theory from (n+1) space-time dimensions to one (time) dimension, and
their distinguished maximal regular subalgebras sl(n) and affine A_{n-2}^{(1)}.
The interplay between these two subalgebras is used, for n=3, to determine the
commutation relations of the `gradient generators' within AE(3). The low level
truncation of the geodesic sigma-model over the coset space AE(n)/K(AE(n)) is
shown to map to a suitably truncated version of the SL(n)/SO(n) non-linear
sigma-model resulting from the reduction Einstein's equations in (n+1)
dimensions to (1+1) dimensions. A further truncation to diagonal solutions can
be exploited to define a one-to-one correspondence between such solutions, and
null geodesic trajectories on the infinite-dimensional coset space H/K(H),
where H is the (extended) Heisenberg group, and K(H) its maximal compact
subgroup. We clarify the relation between H and the corresponding subgroup of
the Geroch group.Comment: 43 page
The effect of 3He impurities on the nonclassical response to oscillation of solid 4He
We have investigated the influence of impurities on the possible supersolid
transition by systematically enriching isotopically-pure 4He (< 1 ppb of 3He)
with 3He. The onset of nonclassical rotational inertia is broadened and shifts
monotonically to higher temperature with increasing 3He concentration,
suggesting that the phenomenon is correlated to the condensation of 3He atoms
onto the dislocation network in solid 4He.Comment: 4 page
Duality Symmetries and G^{+++} Theories
We show that the non-linear realisations of all the very extended algebras
G^{+++}, except the B and C series which we do not consider, contain fields
corresponding to all possible duality symmetries of the on-shell degrees of
freedom of these theories. This result also holds for G_2^{+++} and we argue
that the non-linear realisation of this algebra accounts precisely for the form
fields present in the corresponding supersymmetric theory. We also find a
simple necessary condition for the roots to belong to a G^{+++} algebra.Comment: 35 pages. v2: 2 appendices added, other minor corrections. v3: tables
