Constructive Memory for Bizarre and Sensible Sentences
Sensible, interrelated sentences were presented with or without bizarre sentences that could be transformed to fit the context of the sensible sentences. Two experiments examined subjects\u27 ability to recognize or recall both types of sentences, either immediately or after 2 weeks. Bizarre sentences were frequently recognized at immediate testing; they were generally unavailable at delayed recognition and were never recalled verbatim. In addition, results indicated that transformations of bizarre sentences were stored in memory but were not well incorporated within the structure for the sensible material. These findings are consistent with a constructive approach to memory. Finally, the results suggest that processing bizarre information can lead to more accurate recognition and recall of the sensible context
Safety, efficacy and patient acceptability of the contraceptive and non-contraceptive uses of the LNG-IUS
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) provide highly effective, long-term, safe, reversible contraception, and are the most widely used reversible contraceptive method worldwide. The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is a T-shaped IUD with a steroid reservoir containing 52 mg of levonorgestrel that is released at an initial rate of 20 μg daily. It is highly effective, with a typical-use first year pregnancy rate of 0.1% – similar to surgical tubal occlusion. It is approved for 5 years of contraceptive use, and there is evidence that it can be effective for up to 7 years of continuous use. After removal, there is rapid return to fertility, with 1-year life-table pregnancy rates of 89 per 100 for women less than 30 years of age. Most users experience a dramatic reduction in menstrual bleeding, and about 15% to 20% of women become amenorrheic 1 year after insertion. The device’s strong local effects on the endometrium benefit women with various benign gynecological conditions such as menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, leiomyomata, adenomyosis, and endometriosis. There is also evidence to support its role in endometrial protection during postmenopausal estrogen replacement therapy, and in the treatment of endometrial hyperplasia
Cognition, Emotion, and Memory: Some Applications and Issues
This chapter describes some ways in which the psychology of cognition, emotion, and memory can or might be applied in several practical settings. Recent years have seen a rapid growth in research on cognition and emotion and this research has been summarized in a variety of sources (e.g., Ellis & Ashbrook, 1988, 1989; Ellis, Varner, & Becker, in press; Fiedler & Forgas, 1988; lsen, 1984; Kuiken, 1989; Williams, Watts, MacLeod, & Mathews, 1988). Moreover, a new journal appeared in 1987, Cognition and Emotion, which is entirely devoted to relations among emotional states and the full range of cognitive processes typically studied by psychologists. Ellis and Ashbrook (1989) noted that although this research area has a much earlier history of activity, it lay relatively dormant until the mid-1970s. However, its growth has accelerated rapidly until it has now become an important and active area of research and theoretical development
Anomalous cooling of the massive white dwarf in U Geminorum following a narrow dwarf nova outburst
We obtained Hubble GHRS medium resolution (G160M grating) phase-resolved
spectroscopic observations of the prototype dwarf nova U Geminorum during dwarf
nova quiescence, 13 days and 61 days following the end of a narrow outburst.
The spectral wavelength ranges were centered upon three different line regions:
N V (1238\AA, 1242\AA), Si III (1300\AA) and He II (1640\AA). All of the
quiescent spectra at both epochs are dominated by absorption lines and show no
emission features. The Si III and He II absorption line velocities versus
orbital phase trace the orbital motion of the white dwarf but the N~V
absorption velocities appear to deviate from the white dwarf motion. We confirm
our previously reported low white dwarf rotational velocity, V sin i= 100 km/s.
We obtain a white dwarf orbital velocity semi-amplitude K1=107 km/s. Using the
gamma-velocity of Wade (1981) we obtain an Einstein redshift of 80.4 km/s and
hence a carbon core white dwarf mass of ~1.1 Msun. We report the first subsolar
chemical abundances of C and Si for U Gem with C down by 0.05 with respect to
the Sun, almost certainly a result of C depletion due to thermonuclear
processing. This C-depletion is discussed within the framework of a weak TNR,
contamination of the secondary during the common envelope phase, and mixing of
C-depleted white dwarf gas with C-depleted matter deposited during a dwarf nova
event. Remarkably the Teff of the white dwarf 13 days after outburst is only
32,000K, anomalously cooler than previous early post-outburst measurements.
Extensive cooling during an extraordinarily long (210 days) quiescence followed
by accretion onto an out-of-equilibrium cooled degenerate could explain the

Scalar Spectrum from a Dynamical Gravity/Gauge model
We show that a Dynamical AdS/QCD model is able to reproduce the linear Regge
trajectories for the light-flavor sector of mesons with high spin and also for
the scalar and pseudoscalar ones. In addition the model has confinement by the
Wilson loop criteria and a mass gap. We also calculate the decay amplitude of
scalars into two pion in good agreement to the available experimental data.Comment: Presented in the 4th International Workshop on Astronomy and

Hadrons in AdS/QCD models
We discuss applications of gauge/gravity duality to describe the spectrum of
light hadrons. We compare two particular 5-dimensional approaches: a model with
an infrared deformed Anti-de Sitter metric and another one based on a dynamical
AdS/QCD framework with back-reacted geometry in a dilaton/gravity background.
The models break softly the scale invariance in the infrared region and allow
mass gap for the field excitations in the gravity description, while keeping
the conformal property of the metric close to the four-dimensional boundary.
The models provide linear Regge trajectories for light mesons, associated with
specially designed infrared gravity properties. We also review the results for
the decay widths of the f0's into two pions, as overlap integrals between
mesonic string amplitudes, which are in qualitative agreement with data
