    From Grain to Feed

    Horse beans are used as an example of grain, which have potentials to substitute fish meal in fish feed. After several grinding and fractionation steps it was possible to obtain a protein-rich horse bean fraction with a yield of 19 %. This fraction contained 55.9 % protein. The high protein content together with the amino acid profile makes the fraction very suitable as a substitute to fish meal in fish feed. The protein-rich fraction was used as a successful additive in extruded fish pellets

    Alternative method to find orbits in chaotic systems

    We present here a new method which applies well ordered symbolic dynamics to find unstable periodic and non-periodic orbits in a chaotic system. The method is simple and efficient and has been successfully applied to a number of different systems such as the H\'enon map, disk billiards, stadium billiard, wedge billiard, diamagnetic Kepler problem, colinear Helium atom and systems with attracting potentials.     Crossover Behavior in Burst Avalanches of Fiber Bundles: Signature of Imminent Failure

    Bundles of many fibers, with statistically distributed thresholds for breakdown of individual fibers and where the load carried by a bursting fiber is equally distributed among the surviving members, are considered. During the breakdown process, avalanches consisting of simultaneous rupture of several fibers occur, with a distribution D(Delta) of the magnitude Delta of such avalanches. We show that there is, for certain threshold distributions, a crossover behavior of D(Delta) between two power laws D(Delta) proportional to Delta^(-xi), with xi=3/2 or xi=5/2. The latter is known to be the generic behavior, and we give the condition for which the D(Delta) proportional to Delta^(-3/2) behavior is seen. This crossover is a signal of imminent catastrophic failure in the fiber bundle. We find the same crossover behavior in the fuse model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Alloreactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes generated in the presence of viral- derived peptides show exquisite peptide and MHC specificity

    The nature of alloreactivity to MHC molecules has been enigmatic, primarily because of the observation that allogeneic responses are considerably stronger than syngeneic responses. To better determine the specificity potential of allogeneic responses, we have generated alloreactive CTL specific for exogenous, viral-derived peptide ligands. This approach allowed us to critically evaluate both the peptide- and MHC-specificity of these alloreactive T cells. Exploiting the accessibility of the H-2Ld class I molecule for exogenous peptide ligands, alloreactive CTL were generated that are specific for either murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) or lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) peptides bound by Ld alloantigens. Peptide specificity was initially observed in bulk cultures of alloreactive CTL only when tested on peptide-sensitized T2.Ld target cells that have defective presentation of endogenous peptides. Subsequent cloning of bulk alloreactive CTL lines generated to MCMV yielded CTL clones that had exquisitely specific MCMV peptide recognition requirement. All of the MCMV/Ld alloreactive CTL clones were also exquisitely MHC-specific in that none of the CTL clones lysed targets expressing MCMV/Lq complexes, even though Lq differs from Ld by only six amino acid residues and Lq also binds the MCMV peptide. This observation clearly demonstrates that alloreactive CTL are capable of the same degree of specificity for target cell recognition as are syngeneic CTL in MHC-restricted responses

    A spiral-like disk of ionized gas in IC 1459: Signature of a merging collision

    The authors report the discovery of a large (15 kpc diameter) H alpha + (NII) emission-line disk in the elliptical galaxy IC 1459, showing weak spiral structure. The line flux peaks strongly at the nucleus and is more concentrated than the stellar continuum. The major axis of the disk of ionized gas coincides with that of the stellar body of the galaxy. The mass of the ionized gas is estimated to be approx. 1 times 10 (exp 5) solar mass, less than 1 percent of the total mass of gas present in IC 1459. The total gas mass of 4 times 10(exp 7) solar mass has been estimated from the dust mass derived from a broad-band color index image and the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) data. The authors speculate that the presence of dust and gas in IC 1459 is a signature of a merger event

    Cool Customers in the Stellar Graveyard IV: Spitzer Search for Mid-IR excesses Around Five DAs

    Hydrogen atmosphere white dwarfs with metal lines, so-called DAZs, require external accretion of material to explain the presence of weak metal line absorption in their photospheres. The source of this material is currently unknown, but could come from the interstellar medium, unseen companions, or relic planetesimals from asteroid belt or Kuiper belt analogues. Accurate mid-infrared photometry of these white dwarfs provide additional information to solve the mystery of this accretion and to look for evidence of planetary systems that have survived post main sequence evolution. We present {\em Spitzer} IRAC photometry accurate to ∼\sim3% for four DAZs and one DA with circumstellar absorption lines in the UV. We search for excesses due to unseen companions or circumstellar dust disks. We use {\em Hubble Space Telescope} NICMOS imaging of these white dwarfs to gauge the level of background contamination to our targets as well as rule out common proper motion companions to WD 1620-391. All of our targets show no excesses due to companions >>20 MJ_{J}, ruling out all but very low mass companions to these white dwarfs at all separations. No excesses due to circumstellar disks are observed, and we place limits on what types of disks may still be present.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, Accepted to A
