Highlights of the TEXONO Research Program on Neutrino and Astroparticle Physics
This article reviews the research program and efforts for the TEXONO
Collaboration on neutrino and astro-particle physics. The ``flagship'' program
is on reactor-based neutrino physics at the Kuo-Sheng (KS) Power Plant in
Taiwan. A limit on the neutrino magnetic moment of \munuebar < 1.3 X 10^{-10}
\mub} at 90% confidence level was derived from measurements with a high purity
germanium detector. Other physics topics at KS, as well as the various R&D
program, are discussedComment: 10 pages, 9 figures, Proceedings of the International Symposium on

Suppressing longitudinal double-layer oscillations by using elliptically polarized laser pulses in the hole-boring radiation pressure acceleration regime
It is shown that well collimated mono-energetic ion beams with a large
particle number can be generated in the hole-boring radiation pressure
acceleration regime by using an elliptically polarized laser pulse with
appropriate theoretically determined laser polarization ratio. Due to the
effect, the double-layer charge separation region is
imbued with hot electrons that prevent ion pileup, thus suppressing the
double-layer oscillations. The proposed mechanism is well confirmed by
Particle-in-Cell simulations, and after suppressing the longitudinal
double-layer oscillations, the ion beams driven by the elliptically polarized
lasers own much better energy spectrum than those by circularly polarized
lasers.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Phys. Plasmas (2013) accepte
Specific heat and thermal conductivity of ferromagnetic magnons in Yttrium Iron Garnet
The specific heat and thermal conductivity of the insulating ferrimagnet
YFeO (Yttrium Iron Garnet, YIG) single crystal were measured
down to 50 mK. The ferromagnetic magnon specific heat shows a
characteristic dependence down to 0.77 K. Below 0.77 K, a downward
deviation is observed, which is attributed to the magnetic dipole-dipole
interaction with typical magnitude of 10 eV. The ferromagnetic magnon
thermal conductivity does not show the characteristic
dependence below 0.8 K. To fit the data, both magnetic defect
scattering effect and dipole-dipole interaction are taken into account. These
results complete our understanding of the thermodynamic and thermal transport
properties of the low-lying ferromagnetic magnons.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Strain-stress study of AlxGa1-xN/AlN heterostructures on c-plane sapphire and related optical properties
This work presents a systematic study of stress and strain of AlxGa1-xN/AlN
with composition ranging from GaN to AlN, grown on a c-plane sapphire by
metal-organic chemical vapor deposition, using synchrotron radiation
high-resolution X-ray diffraction and reciprocal space mapping. The c-plane of
the AlxGa1-xN epitaxial layers exhibits compressive strain, while the a-plane
exhibits tensile strain. The biaxial stress and strain are found to increase
with increasing Al composition, although the lattice mismatch between the
AlxGa1-xN and the buffer layer AlN gets smaller. A reduction in the lateral
coherence lengths and an increase in the edge and screw dislocations are seen
as the AlxGa1-xN composition is varied from GaN to AlN, exhibiting a clear
dependence of the crystal properties of AlxGa1-xN on the Al content. The
bandgap of the epitaxial layers is slightly lower than predicted value due to a
larger tensile strain effect on the a-axis compared to the compressive strain
on the c-axis. Raman characteristics of the AlxGa1-xN samples exhibit a shift
in the phonon peaks with the Al composition. The effect of strain is also
discussed on the optical phonon energies of the epitaxial layers. The
techniques discussed here can be used to study other similar materials.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 table
