Novel quantum phases of dipolar Bose gases in optical lattices
We investigate the quantum phases of polarized dipolar Bosons loaded into a
two-dimensional square and three-dimensional cubic optical lattices. We show
that the long-range and anisotropic nature of the dipole-dipole interaction
induces a rich variety of quantum phases, including the supersolid and striped
supersolid phases in 2D lattices, and the layered supersolid phase in 3D
lattices.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Onset of unsteady horizontal convection in rectangle tank at
The horizontal convection within a rectangle tank is numerically simulated.
The flow is found to be unsteady at high Rayleigh numbers. There is a Hopf
bifurcation of from steady solutions to periodic solutions, and the
critical Rayleigh number is obtained as for the
middle plume forcing at , which is much larger than the formerly obtained
value. Besides, the unstable perturbations are always generated from the
central jet, which implies that the onset of instability is due to velocity
shear (shear instability) other than thermally dynamics (thermal instability).
Finally, Paparella and Young's [J. Fluid Mech. 466 (2002) 205] first hypotheses
about the destabilization of the flow is numerically proved, i.e. the middle
plume forcing can lead to a destabilization of the flow.Comment: 4pages, 6 figures, extension of Chin. Phys. Lett. 2008, 25(6), in

A performance measure for manual control systems
A new performance measure is introduced for multivariable closed loop experiments with a human operator. The essential feature of the phase margin performance measure (PMPM) is that the performance of each control loop can be determined independently, with prescribed disturbance and error levels. A variable filter parameter is used as the PMPM within the loop and it assures a high workload at the same time. There is a straightforward relationship between the PMPM and the inner loop feedback augmentation that can be utilized in trade-off studies. An adjustment scheme that seeks the PMPM automatically is described as employed in a single loop control task. This task applies directly to the experimental study of displays for helicopters and VTOL aircraft
