Ab initio Wannier-function-based correlated calculations of Born effective charges of crystalline LiO and LiCl
In this paper we have used our recently developed ab initio
Wannier-function-based methodology to perform extensive Hartree-Fock and
correlated calculations on LiO and LiCl to compute their Born effective
charges. Results thus obtained are in very good agreement with the experiments.
In particular, for the case of LiO, we resolve a controversy originating
in the experiment of Osaka and Shindo {[}Solid State Commun. 51 (1984) 421] who
had predicted the effective charge of Li ions to be in the range 0.58--0.61, a
value much smaller compared to its nominal value of unity, thereby, suggesting
that the bonding in the material could be partially covalent. We demonstrate
that effective charge computed by Osaka and Shindo is the Szigeti charge, and
once the Born charge is computed, it is in excellent agreement with our
computed value. Mulliken population analysis of LiO also confirms ionic

Understanding Terrorist Organizations with a Dynamic Model
Terrorist organizations change over time because of processes such as
recruitment and training as well as counter-terrorism (CT) measures, but the
effects of these processes are typically studied qualitatively and in
separation from each other. Seeking a more quantitative and integrated
understanding, we constructed a simple dynamic model where equations describe
how these processes change an organization's membership. Analysis of the model
yields a number of intuitive as well as novel findings. Most importantly it
becomes possible to predict whether counter-terrorism measures would be
sufficient to defeat the organization. Furthermore, we can prove in general
that an organization would collapse if its strength and its pool of foot
soldiers decline simultaneously. In contrast, a simultaneous decline in its
strength and its pool of leaders is often insufficient and short-termed. These
results and other like them demonstrate the great potential of dynamic models
for informing terrorism scholarship and counter-terrorism policy making.Comment: To appear as Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science v2:

Sensitive Search for a Permanent Muon Electric Dipole Moment
We are proposing a new method to carry out a dedicated search for a permanent
electric dipole moment (EDM) of the muon with a sensitivity at a level of
10^{-24} e cm. The experimental design exploits the strong motional electric
field sensed by relativistic particles in a magnetic storage ring. As a key
feature, a novel technique has been invented in which the g-2 precession is
compensated with radial electric field. This technique will benefit greatly
when the intense muon sources advocated by the developers of the muon storage

R-values in Low Energy e^+e^- Annihilation
This presentation briefly summarizes the recent measurements of R-values in
low energy e^+e^- annihilation. The new experiments aimed at reducing the
uncertainties in R-values and performed with the upgraded Beijing Spectrometer
(BESII) at Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC) in Beijing and with CMD-2

Black Hole Evaporation in a Noncommutative Charged Vaidya Model
The aim of this paper is to study the black hole evaporation and Hawking
radiation for a noncommutative charged Vaidya black hole. For this purpose, we
determine spherically symmetric charged Vaidya model and then formulate a
noncommutative Reissner-Nordstrm-like solution of this model which
leads to an exact dependent metric. The behavior of temporal component
of this metric and the corresponding Hawking temperature is investigated. The
results are shown in the form of graphs. Further, we examine the tunneling
process of the charged massive particles through the quantum horizon. It is
found that the tunneling amplitude is modified due to noncommutativity. Also,
it turns out that black hole evaporates completely in the limits of large time
and horizon radius. The effect of charge is to reduce the temperature from
maximum value to zero. It is mentioned here that the final stage of black hole

Improved Measurement of the Positive Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment
A new measurement of the positive muon's anomalous magnetic moment has been
made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron using the direct
injection of polarized muons into the superferric storage ring. The angular
frequency difference omega_{a} between the angular spin precession frequency
omega_{s} and the angular orbital frequency omega_{c} is measured as well as
the free proton NMR frequency omega_{p}. These determine
R = omega_{a} / omega_{p} = 3.707~201(19) times 10^{-3}. With mu_{mu} /
mu_{p} = 3.183~345~39(10) this gives a_{mu^+} = 11~659~191(59) times 10^{-10}
(pm 5 ppm), in good agreement with the previous CERN and BNL measurements for

Keeping Steady as She Goes: A Negotiated Order Perspective on Technological Evolution
A central idea in the theory of technology cycles is that social and political mechanisms are most important during the selection of a dominant design, and that eras of incremental change are socially uninteresting periods in which innovation is driven by technological momentum and elaboration of the dominant design. In this essay, we overturn the ontological assumption that social order is inherently stable, drawing on Anselm Strauss's concept of negotiated order to analyze the persistence of a dominant design as a social accomplishment: an outcome of ongoing processes that reinforce or challenge a socially negotiated order. Thus, we shift focus from battles over standards to periods of normal innovation. We extend the technology cycles model to explain social dynamics in periods of incremental change, and to make predictions specifying how contextual conditions in standards-setting organizations affect social interaction, leading to reinforcement or challenge to a socio-technical order
Radiative energy shifts of accelerated atoms
We consider the influence of acceleration on the radiative energy shifts of
atoms in Minkowski space. We study a two-level atom coupled to a scalar quantum
field. Using a Heisenberg picture approach, we are able to separate the
contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the Lamb shift
of the two-level atom. The resulting energy shifts for the special case of a
uniformly accelerated atom are then compared with those of an atom at rest.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 1 figure as uuencoded eps file, shorter version will

Search for Lorentz and CPT Violation Effects in Muon Spin Precession
The spin precession frequency of muons stored in the storage ring has
been analyzed for evidence of Lorentz and CPT violation. Two Lorentz and CPT
violation signatures were searched for: a nonzero
