    Rapid Synchronisation of RTP Flows

    <p>This memo outlines how RTP sessions are synchronised, and discusses how rapidly such synchronisation can occur. We show that most RTP sessions can be synchronised mmediately, but that the use of video switching multipoint conference units (MCUs) or large source-specific multicast (SSM) groups can greatly increase the synchronisation delay. This increase in delay can be unacceptable to some applications that use layered and/or multi-description codecs.</p> <p>This memo introduces three mechanisms to reduce the synchronisation delay for such sessions. First, it updates the RTP Control Protocol (RTCP) timing rules to reduce the initial synchronisation delay for SSM sessions.     Increased eosinophil granule proteins have been described in serum and sputum samples of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). It has been assumed that eosinophil degranulation is enhanced in atopic subjects - as in asthmatics. Since in CF no differences in eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), eosinophil protein X (EPX), and eosinophil peroxidase between atopic and nonatopic subjects have been detected, we investigated whether major basic protein (MBP) is increased in serum and sputum samples derived from atopic (n = 14) compared with nonatopic CF subjects (n = 26). In CF patients, high mean serum (sputum) levels of ECP 29.7 microg/l (2.7 mg/l), EPX 53.7 microg/l (7.9 mg/l), and MBP 984.6 microg/l but low sputum MBP levels (57.4 microg/l) were measured. In addition, in serum and in sputum samples, a significant correlation between MBP and ECP (P<0.03 and P<0.0001, respectively) or EPX (P<0.05 and P<0.0004, respectively) was detected. By subdivision of the patients into allergic and nonallergic subjects, significant differences were found for serum MBP values only(mean 1382.2 microg/l vs. 770.5 microg/l; P<0.0001), but not for ECP or EPX serum levels or for eosinophil proteins in sputum. Although no differences between atopic and nonatopic CF patients in ECP and EPX were found, serum MBP levels were higher in patients sensitized to inhalant allergens than in nonsensitized subjects. These results indicate differential release of eosinophil granule proteins in peripheral blood from eosinophils, and they also indicate that MBP in serum likely is to be a better discriminator of atopy in CF

    Development of a Sandwich ELISA to Measure Exposure to Occupational Cow Hair Allergens

    Background: Cow hair and dander are important inducers of occupational allergies in cattle-exposed farmers. To estimate allergen exposure in farming environments, a sensitive enzyme immunoassay was developed to measure cow hair allergens. Methods: A sandwich ELISA was developed using polyclonal rabbit antibodies against a mixture of hair extracts from different cattle breeds. To assess the specificity of the assay, extracts from other mammalian epithelia, mites, molds and grains were tested. To validate the new assay, cow hair allergens were measured in passive airborne dust samples from the stables and homes of farmers. Dust was collected with electrostatic dust fall collectors (EDCs). Results: The sandwich ELISA was found to be very sensitive (detection limit: 0.1 ng/ml) and highly reproducible, demonstrating intra-and interassay coefficients of variation of 4 and 10%, respectively. The assay showed no reactivity with mites, molds and grains, but some cross-reactivity with other mammalian epithelia, with the strongest reaction with goat. Using EDCs for dust sampling, high concentrations of bovine allergens were measured in cow stables (4,760-559,400 mu g/m(2)). In addition, bovine allergens were detected in all areas of cattle farmer dwellings. A large variation was found between individual samples (0.3-900 mu g/m(2)) and significantly higher values were discovered in changing rooms. Conclusion: The ELISA developed for the detection of cow hair proteins is a useful tool for allergen quantification in occupational and home environments.     3GPP compliant adaptive wireless video streaming using H.264/AVC

    In 3GPP a standard for multimedia streaming over mobile networks called PSS (packet-switched streaming service) has been specified. In order to deal with changing transmission characteristics like varying link bit-rate or handover, adaptive streaming features like client feedback have been included into Release 6 of 3GPP PSS. The adaptive behavior of the streaming server is not specified in PSS. In this paper, an adaptive video streaming system is presented that is compliant with PSS. Using PSS client feedback, transmission characteristics and client buffer status are determined. By means of transmission rate control, packet scheduling, video thinning, and bit-stream switching, the streaming server reacts to the determined transmission characteristics and the client buffer status. As video coding standard, H.264/AVC is used in the adaptive streaming system. Experimental results show that using the presented adaptive streaming system the overall video quality at the client is significantly improved in case of varying link bit-rate or handover

    Multidimensional layered forward error correction using rateless codes

    Modern layered or scalable video coding technologies generate a video bit stream with various inter layer dependencies due to references between the layers. This work proposes a method for extending forward error correction (FECs) codes following dependency structures within the media. The proposed layer-aware FEC (L-FEC) generates repair symbols so that protection of less important dependency layers can be used with protection of more important layers for combined error correction. The L-FEC approach is exemplary applied to rateless LT and Raptor codes. Gains for more important layers can be achieved without increasing the total FEC code rate. The performance gain of the L-FEC is shown by simulation results with receiver-driven layered multicast transmission using scalable video coding (SVC) with a Raptor-based L-FEC
