Static, massive fields and vacuum polarization potential in Rindler space

    Get PDF
In Rindler space, we determine in terms of special functions the expression of the static, massive scalar or vector field generated by a point source. We find also an explicit integral expression of the induced electrostatic potential resulting from the vacuum polarization due to an electric charge at rest in the Rindler coordinates. For a weak acceleration, we give then an approximate expression in the Fermi coordinates associated with the uniformly accelerated observer.Comment: 11 pages, latex, no figure

Electrostatics in a Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string

We explicitly determine the expression of the electrostatic potential generated by a point charge at rest in the Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string. We can then calculate the electrostatic self-energy. From this, we find again the upper entropy bound for a charged object by employing thermodynamics of the black hole.Comment: Latex, 8 pages, 1 figure in late

Electrostatics in a simple wormhole revisited

The electrostatic potential generated by a point charge at rest in a simple static, spherically symmetric wormhole is given in the form of series of multipoles and in closed form. The general potential which is physically acceptable depends on a parameter due to the fact that the monopole solution is arbitrary. When the wormhole has Z2-symmetry, the potential is completely determined. The calculation of the electrostatic self-energy and of the self-force is performed in all cases considered.Comment: 16 pages, no figure

Vacuum polarization induced by a uniformly accelerated charge

    Get PDF
We consider a point charge fixed in the Rindler coordinates which describe a uniformly accelerated frame. We determine an integral expression of the induced charge density due to the vacuum polarization at the first order in the fine structure constant. In the case where the acceleration is weak, we give explicitly the induced electrostatic potential.Comment: 13 pages, latex, no figures, to appear in Int. J. Theor. Phys

Cosmic String Spacetime in Dilaton Gravity and Flat Rotation Curves

In dilaton gravity theories, we consider a string-like topological defect formed during U(1) gauge symmetry-breaking phase transition in the early Universe, and far from the cosmic string we have vacuum solutions of the generalized Einstein equation. We discuss how they can be related to the flatness of galactic rotation curves.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX4 fil

Electric Charge in Interaction with Magnetically Charged Black Holes

We examine the angular momentum of an electric charge e placed at rest outside a dilaton black hole with magnetic charge Q. The electromagnetic angular momentum which is stored in the electromagnetic field outside the black hole shows several common features regardless of the dilaton coupling strength, though the dilaton black holes are drastically different in their spacetime structure depending on it. First, the electromagnetic angular momentum depends on the separation distance between the two objects and changes monotonically from eQ to 0 as the charge goes down from infinity to the horizon, if rotational effects of the black hole are discarded. Next, as the black hole approaches extremality, however, the electromagnetic angular momentum tends to be independent of the distance between the two objects. It is then precisely eQeQ as in the electric charge and monopole system in flat spacetime. We discuss why these effects are exhibited and argue that the above features are to hold in widely generic settings including black hole solutions in theories with more complicated field contents, by addressing the no hair theorem for black holes and the phenomenon of field expulsion exhibited by extremal black holes.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures ; Typos are corrected and a reference is adde

Semiclassical gravitational effects near a singular magnetic flux

    Get PDF
We consider the backreaction of the vacuum polarization effect for a massive charged scalar field in the presence of a singular magnetic massless string on the background metric. Using semiclassical approach, we find the first-order (in ℏ\hbar units) metric modifications and the corresponding gravitational potential and deficit angle. It is shown that, in certain region of values of coupling constant and magnetic flux, the gravitational potential and deficit angle can be positive as well as negative over all distances from the string and can even change its sign. Unlike the case of massless scalar field, the gravitational corrections were found to have short-range behavior.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, journal versio

    Cosmic strings in axionic-dilatonic gravity

    Get PDF
We first consider local cosmic strings in dilaton-axion gravity and show that they are singular solutions. Then we take a supermassive Higgs limit and present expressions for the fields at far distances from the core by applying a Pecci-Quinn and a duality transformation to the dilatonic Melvin's magnetic universe.Comment: Latex file. 16 page

Exact Black Holes and Gravitational Shockwaves on Codimension-2 Branes

We derive exact gravitational fields of a black hole and a relativistic particle stuck on a codimension-2 brane in DD dimensions when gravity is ruled by the bulk DD-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert action. The black hole is locally the higher-dimensional Schwarzschild solution, which is threaded by a tensional brane yielding a deficit angle and includes the first explicit example of a `small' black hole on a tensional 3-brane. The shockwaves allow us to study the large distance limits of gravity on codimension-2 branes. In an infinite locally flat bulk, they extinguish as 1/rD−41/r^{D-4}, i.e. as 1/r21/r^2 on a 3-brane in 6D6D, manifestly displaying the full dimensionality of spacetime. We check that when we compactify the bulk, this special case correctly reduces to the 4D Aichelburg-Sexl solution at large distances. Our examples show that gravity does not really obstruct having general matter stress-energy on codimension-2 branes, although its mathematical description may be more involved.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX; v2: added references, version to appear in JHE

Self-Forces on Electric and Magnetic Linear Sources in the Space-Time of a Cosmic String

    Get PDF
In this paper we calculate the magnetic and electric self-forces, induced by the conical structure of a cosmic string space-time, on a long straight wire which presents either a constant current or a linear charge density. We also show how these self-forces are related by a Lorentz tranformation and, in this way, explain what two different inertial observers detect in their respective frames.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, to be published in Phys.
