The Critical Elements of Collaborative Consultation

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to identify the critical elements necessary for speech-language pathologists to implement an effective collaborative consultation model. A survey was mailed to 300 ISHA member speech-language pathologists working in Illinois schools. The survey contained elements of collaborative consultation originally identified by researchers and professionals in the field of communication disorders and sciences. Those elements identified by the survey respondents as being most critical were, (a) planning time, and (b) acceptance and support of administrators, teachers, and parents. The elements on the survey instrument ranked significantly lower than the rest were, (a) time to observe those involved in the collaborative effort, (b) both the individuals and organization receive assistance and attention to deal with problems, and (c) evaluating alternatives to anticipate possible consequences, narrow and combine choices, and assign priorities. The results of the study and their clinical implications are discussed

Synthesis of Trishomocubane Amino Acid Derivatives

    Get PDF
The synthesis of four novel trishomocubane amino acid derivatives is described. The hydantoin precursor and bis-Boc protected hydantoin (>95% yield) were previously reported. A mild hydrolysis of the bis-Boc hydantoin with lithium hydroxide at room temperature quantitatively yielded the corresponding novel cage amino acid. The cage amino acid was characterized as the Fmoc derivative. Although the Fmoc amino acid is partially deprotected after three weeks in a refrigerator, it is stable enough for use in Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS). The Fmoc cage amino acid was converted to the acid fluoride with cyanuric fluoride. The acid fluoride is required for activation of the cage amino acid in SPPS. Esterification of the sterically hindered trishomocubane amino acid is also reported, indicating sufficient reactivity of the acid function for potential use in SPPS.Keywords: Trishomocubane amino acid, hydantoin, Fmoc protection, t-Boc protection, acid fluoride, esterification

Necessary Conditions for Non-Intersection of Collections of Sets

This paper continues studies of non-intersection properties of finite collections of sets initiated 40 years ago by the extremal principle. We study elementary non-intersection properties of collections of sets, making the core of the conventional definitions of extremality and stationarity. In the setting of general Banach/Asplund spaces, we establish new primal (slope) and dual (generalized separation) necessary conditions for these non-intersection properties. The results are applied to convergence analysis of alternating projections.Comment: 26 page

The ORGAN Experiment: An axion haloscope above 15 GHz

We present first results and future plans for the Oscillating Resonant Group AxioN (ORGAN) experiment, a microwave cavity axion haloscope situated in Perth, Western Australia designed to probe for high mass axions motivated by several theoretical models. The first stage focuses around 26.6 GHz in order to directly test a claimed result, which suggests axions exist at the corresponding mass of 110 μ110~\mueV. Later stages will move to a wider scan range of 15-50 GHz (60−210 μ60-210~\mu eV). We present the results of the pathfinding run, which sets a limit on gaγγg_{a\gamma\gamma} of 2.02×10−122.02\times 10^{-12} eV−1^{-1} at 26.531 GHz, or 110~μ\mueV, in a span of 2.5 neV (shaped by the Lorentzian resonance) with 90%90 \% confidence. Furthermore, we outline the current design and future strategies to eventually attain the sensitivity to search for well known axion models over the wider mass range.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. Dynamical density functional theory for the evaporation of droplets of nanoparticle suspension

    Get PDF
We develop a lattice gas model for the drying of droplets of a nanoparticle suspension on a planar surface, using dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) to describe the time evolution of the solvent and nanoparticle density profiles. The DDFT assumes a diffusive dynamics but does not include the advective hydrodynamics of the solvent, so the model is relevant to highly viscous or near to equilibrium systems. Nonetheless, we see an equivalent of the coffee-ring stain effect, but in the present model it occurs for thermodynamic rather the fluid-mechanical reasons. The model incorporates the effect of phase separation and vertical density variations within the droplet and the consequence of these on the nanoparticle deposition pattern on the surface. We show how to include the effect of slip or no-slip at the surface and how this is related to the receding contact angle. We also determine how the equilibrium contact angle depends on the microscopic interaction parameters.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figure

A Causal Algebra for Liouville Exponentials

A causal Poisson bracket algebra for Liouville exponentials on a cylinder is derived using an exchange algebra for free fields describing the in and out asymptotics. The causal algebra involves an even number of space-time points with a minimum of four. A quantum realisation of the algebra is obtained which preserves causality and the local form of non-equal time brackets.Comment: 10 page

Application of (S,S)-Pentacycloundecane bis(4-Phenyloxazoline) as a Novel Chiral Ligand for Catalysis of the Asymmetric Diels-Alder Reaction of Cyclopentadiene with 3-Acryloyl-2-oxazolidinone

The synthesis of the novel C1 symmetric (S,S)-pentacycloundecane bis(4-phenyloxazoline) ligand 5 and its evaluation as a chiral Lewis acid catalyst in the benchmark asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction between 3-acryloyloxazolidin-2-one (6) and cyclopentadiene (7) is reported. From the various metal salts screened the anhydrous magnesium perchlorate complex emerged as the best catalyst. The endo-cycloadduct product 8 was afforded in 81% enantiomeric excess with an endo:exo ratio of 98:2. An extensive screening of various metal ions as complexing agents was performed and is also reported. Keywords: Pentacycloundecane, oxazolines, chiral catalysis, Diels-Alder reactionPDF and Supplementry file attache
