Event synchronization: a simple and fast method to measure synchronicity and time delay patterns
We propose a simple method to measure synchronization and time delay patterns
between signals. It is based on the relative timings of events in the time
series, defined e.g. as local maxima. The degree of synchronization is obtained
from the number of quasi-simultaneous appearances of events, and the delay is
calculated from the precedence of events in one signal with respect to the
other. Moreover, we can easily visualize the time evolution of the delay and
synchronization level with an excellent resolution.
We apply the algorithm to short rat EEG signals, some of them containing
spikes. We also apply it to an intracranial human EEG recording containing an
epileptic seizure, and we propose that the method might be useful for the
detection of foci and for seizure prediction. It can be easily extended to
other types of data and it is very simple and fast, thus being suitable for

Characterization of a ballistic supermirror neutron guide
We describe the beam characteristics of the first ballistic supermirror
neutron guide H113 that feeds the neutron user facility for particle physics
PF1B of the Institute Laue-Langevin, Grenoble (ILL). At present, the neutron
capture flux density of H113 at its 20x6cm2 exit window is 1.35x10^10/cm^2/s,
and will soon be raised to above 2x10^10/cm^2/s. Beam divergence is no larger
than beam divergence from a conventional Ni coated guide. A model is developed
that permits rapid calculation of beam profiles and absolute event rates from
such a beam. We propose a procedure that permits inter-comparability of the

Measurement of the Neutrino Asymmetry Parameter B in Neutron Decay
A new measurement of the neutrino asymmetry parameter B in neutron decay, the
angular correlation between neutron spin and anti-neutrino momentum, is
presented. The result, B=0.9802(50), agrees with the Standard Model expectation
and earlier measurements, and permits improved tests on ``new physics'' in

Dynamical response of the Hodgkin-Huxley model in the high-input regime
The response of the Hodgkin-Huxley neuronal model subjected to stochastic
uncorrelated spike trains originating from a large number of inhibitory and
excitatory post-synaptic potentials is analyzed in detail. The model is
examined in its three fundamental dynamical regimes: silence, bistability and
repetitive firing. Its response is characterized in terms of statistical
indicators (interspike-interval distributions and their first moments) as well
as of dynamical indicators (autocorrelation functions and conditional
entropies). In the silent regime, the coexistence of two different coherence
resonances is revealed: one occurs at quite low noise and is related to the
stimulation of subthreshold oscillations around the rest state; the second one
(at intermediate noise variance) is associated with the regularization of the
sequence of spikes emitted by the neuron. Bistability in the low noise limit
can be interpreted in terms of jumping processes across barriers activated by
stochastic fluctuations. In the repetitive firing regime a maximization of
incoherence is observed at finite noise variance. Finally, the mechanisms

Reply to "Comment on 'Performance of different synchronization measures in real data: A case study on electroencephalographic signals'"
We agree with the Comment by Duckrow and Albano [Phys. Rev. E 67, 063901 (2003)] that mutual information, estimated with an optimized algorithm, can be a useful tool for studying synchronization in real data. However, we point out that the improvement they found is mainly due to an interesting but nonstandard embedding technique used, and not so much due to the algorithm used for the estimation of mutual information itself. On demand treatment and home therapy of hereditary angioedema in Germany - the Frankfurt experience
Background: Manifestation of acute edema in hereditary angioedema (HAE) is characterized by interindividual and intraindividual variability in symptom expression over time. Flexible therapy options are needed. Methods: We describe and report on the outcomes of the highly individualized approach to HAE therapy practiced at our HAE center in Frankfurt (Germany). Results: The HAE center at the Frankfurt University Hospital currently treats 450 adults with HAE or AAE and 107 pediatric HAE patients with highly individualized therapeutic approaches. 73.9% of the adult patients treat HAE attacks by on-demand therapy with pasteurized pd C1-INH concentrate, 9.8% use additional prophylaxis with attenuated androgens, 1% of the total patient population in Frankfurt has been treated with Icatibant up to now. In addition adult and selected pediatric patients with a high frequency of severe attacks are instructed to apply individual replacement therapy (IRT) with pasteurized pd C1-INH concentrate. Improvement on Quality of Life items was shown for these patients compared to previous long-term danazol prophylaxis. Home treatment of HAE patients was developed in the Frankfurt HAE center in line with experiences in hemophilia therapy and has so far been implemented over a period of 28 years. At present 248 (55%) of the adult patients and 26 (24%) of the pediatric patients are practicing home treatment either as on demand or IRT treatment. Conclusions: In conclusion, the individualized home therapies provided by our HAE center, aim to limit the disruption to normal daily activities that occurs for many HAE patients. Furthermore, we seek to optimize the economic burden of the disease while offering a maximum quality of life to our patients
