    Glutamatergic Control of Striatal Dopamine Release in Normal Rats and 6-OHDA Rats with Intrastriatal Grafts

    Recent animal experiments suggest that transplanted neurons become integrated with the host brain. Neuroanatomical studies have shown that transplanted dopaminergic neurons can form synaptic connections on target cells in the host striatum. Other studies also have shown that grafted neurons not only innervate the host striatum but also receive afferent inputs from neurons of the host. However, little is known about the dynamic regulation of graft-derived dopamine (DA) release by the host brain. In normal animals, cortical neuronal input to the striatum is carried mainly via glutamate (Glu) neurons. Interactions between DA and Glu in the striatum are shown by in vivo and in vitro studies. Using in vivo microdialysis, the present study was carried out in order to elucidate the effects of glutamatergic agonists and Glu blockade on DA release in the normal striatum and in the striatum of 6-OHDA rats with dopamine grafts

    An Accurate Determination of the Exchange Constant in Sr_2CuO_3 from Recent Theoretical Results

    Data from susceptibility measurements on Sr_2CuO_3 are compared with recent theoretical predictions for the magnetic susceptibility of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. The experimental data fully confirms the theoretical predictions and in turn we establish that Sr_2CuO_3 behaves almost perfectly like a one-dimensional antiferromagnet with an exchange coupling of J = 1700^{+150}_{-100}K.Comment: revised and reformatted paper with new title to appear in Phys. It has also been shown that the training effect on size and strength of the skeletal muscle are altered the different athletic training protocols (1, 4). From these findings, it seems possible that wrestlers possess the hypertrophied muscle and stronger muscle strength by specific training.     Vectorial Control of Magnetization by Light

    Coherent light-matter interactions have recently extended their applications to the ultrafast control of magnetization in solids. An important but unrealized technique is the manipulation of magnetization vector motion to make it follow an arbitrarily designed multi-dimensional trajectory. Furthermore, for its realization, the phase and amplitude of degenerate modes need to be steered independently. A promising method is to employ Raman-type nonlinear optical processes induced by femtosecond laser pulses, where magnetic oscillations are induced impulsively with a controlled initial phase and an azimuthal angle that follows well defined selection rules determined by the materials' symmetries. Here, we emphasize the fact that temporal variation of the polarization angle of the laser pulses enables us to distinguish between the two degenerate modes. A full manipulation of two-dimensional magnetic oscillations is demonstrated in antiferromagnetic NiO by employing a pair of polarization-twisted optical pulses.
