    The Interface of Work to Family Conflict and Racioethnic Identification: An Analysis of Hispanic Business Professionals

    This article examines work to family conflict for Hispanic Business Professionals with varied levels of Hispanic identity. Based on this study of 971 Hispanics from across the United States, results show that level of Hispanic identity moderates the relationship between work to family conflict and job satisfaction. The authors posit that identification with a culture of collectivism may attenuate the negative impact of work to family conflict on job satisfaction, enabling Hispanic professionals to view work as a way of supporting the family and contributing to the greater good of the groups to which they belong

    Audiovisual temporal correspondence modulates human multisensory superior temporal sulcus plus primary sensory cortices

    The brain should integrate related but not unrelated information from different senses. Temporal patterning of inputs to different modalities may provide critical information about whether those inputs are related or not. We studied effects of temporal correspondence between auditory and visual streams on human brain activity with functional magnetic resonance imaging ( fMRI). Streams of visual flashes with irregularly jittered, arrhythmic timing could appear on right or left, with or without a stream of auditory tones that coincided perfectly when present ( highly unlikely by chance), were noncoincident with vision ( different erratic, arrhythmic pattern with same temporal statistics), or an auditory stream appeared alone. fMRI revealed blood oxygenation level-dependent ( BOLD) increases in multisensory superior temporal sulcus (mSTS), contralateral to a visual stream when coincident with an auditory stream, and BOLD decreases for noncoincidence relative to unisensory baselines. Contralateral primary visual cortex and auditory cortex were also affected by audiovisual temporal correspondence or noncorrespondence, as confirmed in individuals. Connectivity analyses indicated enhanced influence from mSTS on primary sensory areas, rather than vice versa, during audiovisual correspondence. Temporal correspondence between auditory and visual streams affects a network of both multisensory ( mSTS) and sensory-specific areas in humans, including even primary visual and auditory cortex, with stronger responses for corresponding and thus related audiovisual inputs

    The Effect Of Plasma-deposited Polymers On The Nucleate Boiling Behavior Of Copper Heat Transfer Surfaces

    The effect of plasma deposited polymers on the nucleate boiling behavior of copper heat transfer surfaces, using water as the boiling liquid, was determined. The monomers used were tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and methane. It was found that an 18 nm thick coating of TFE enhanced the nucleate boiling, while a 150 nm thick coating reduced the nucleate boiling. Both 15 nm and 150 nm thick coatings of methane reduced the nucleate boiling, with the effect being more pronounced with the thicker coating. A surface energy effect is postulated to explain the enhanced boiling observed. © 1981

    Inhomogeneous Distribution of Components in Solid Protein Pharmaceuticals:Origins, Consequences, Analysis, and Resolutions

    Successful development of stable solid protein formulations usually requires the addition of one or several excipients to achieve optimal stability. In these products, there is a potential risk of an inhomogeneous distribution of the various ingredients, specifically the ratio of protein and stabilizer may vary. Such inhomogeneity can be detrimental for stability but is mostly neglected in literature. In the past, it was challenging to analyze inhomogeneous component distribution, but recent advances in analytical techniques have revealed new options to investigate this phenomenon. This paper aims to review fundamental aspects of the inhomogeneous distribution of components of freeze-dried and spray-dried protein formulations. Four key topics will be presented and discussed, including the sources of component inhomogeneity, its consequences on protein stability, the analytical methods to reveal component inhomogeneity, and possible solutions to prevent or mitigate inhomogeneity

    Multilayer clustering: Biomarker driven segmentation of Alzheimer's disease patient population

    Identification of biomarkers for the Alzheimer's disease is a challenge and a very difficult task both for medical research and data analysis. In this work we present results obtained by application of a novel clustering tool. The goal is to identify subpopulations of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients that are homogeneous in respect of available clinical and biological descriptors. The result presents a segmentation of the Alzheimer's disease patient population and it may be expected that within each subpopulation separately it will be easier to identify connections between clinical and biological descriptors. Through the evaluation of the obtained clusters with AD subpopulations it has been noticed that for two of them relevant biological measurements (whole brain volume and intracerebral volume) change in opposite directions. If this observation is actually true it would mean that the diagnosed severe dementia problems are results of different physiological processes. The observation may have substantial consequences for medical research and clinical trial design. The used clustering methodology may be interesting also for other medical and biological domains
