Controlled enhancement or suppression of exchange biasing using impurity -layers
The effects of inserting impurity -layers of various elements into a
Co/IrMn exchange biased bilayer, at both the interface, and at given points
within the IrMn layer a distance from the interface, has been investigated.
Depending on the chemical species of dopant, and its position, we found that
the exchange biasing can be either strongly enhanced or suppressed. We show
that biasing is enhanced with a dusting of certain magnetic impurities, present
at either at the interface or sufficiently far away from the Co/IrMn interface.
This illustrates that the final spin structure at the Co/IrMn interface is not
only governed by interface structure/roughness but is also mediated by local
exchange or anisotropy variations within the bulk of the IrMn
Calibration of the Ames Anechoic Facility. Phase 1: Short range plan
A calibration was made of the acoustic and aerodynamic characteristics of a small, open-jet wind tunnel in an anechoic room. The jet nozzle was 102 mm diameter and was operated subsonically. The anechoic-room dimensions were 7.6 m by 5.5 m by 3.4 m high (wedge tip to wedge tip). Noise contours in the chamber were determined by various jet speeds and exhaust collector positions. The optimum nozzle/collector separation from an acoustic standpoint was 2.1 m. Jet velocity profiles and turbulence levels were measured using pressure probes and hot wires. The jet was found to be symmetric, with no unusual characteristics. The turbulence measurements were hampered by oil mist contamination of the airflow
Comparing Cognitive Theories of Learning Transfer to Advance Cybersecurity Instruction, Assessment, and Testing
The cybersecurity threat landscape evolves quickly, continually, and consequentially. This means that the transfer of cybersecurity learning is crucial. We compared how different recognized âcognitiveâ transfer theories might help explain and synergize three aspects of cybersecurity education. These include teaching and training in diverse settings, assessing learning formatively & summatively, and testing & measuring achievement, proficiency, & readiness. We excluded newer sociocultural theories and their implications for inclusion as we explore those theories elsewhere. We first summarized the history of cybersecurity education and proficiency standards considering transfer theories. We then explored each theory and reviewed the most relevant cybersecurity education research; in some cases, we broadened our search to computing education. We concluded that (a) archaic differential transfer theories are still influential but have negative implications to be avoided, (b) constructionist theories are popular in K-12 settings but raise issues for assessment and transfer, (c) many embrace a general cognitive science perspective that can resolve tensions between modern cognitive-associationist and cognitive-constructivist theories that are popular with innovators, and (d) new perceptual and coordinative theories have potential worth exploring. These insights should support âgenerativeâ cybersecurity learning that transfers readily and widely to future classes, tests, and workplaces. These insights should be beneficial when designing and using cyber ârangesâ and other hyper-realistic simulations, where transfer assumptions inform costly design decisions and undergird the validity of performance as evidence of proficiency
Local institutions and smallholder womenâs access to land resources in semi-arid Kenya
Land is a critical resource in smallholder farming systems, access to which is guided by complex interpretations of local norms, customary values, and statutory laws. This study explores how smallholder women access land resources under local institutions in semi-arid Kenya following a major constitutional reform on land succession passed in 2010. We draw on social relations approach, access theory, and social-ecological resilience thinking to examine Kamba womenâs access to land resources using qualitative data collected through in-depth key informant interviews (nâŻ=âŻ77), twelve focus group discussions (nâŻ=âŻ134), and eight community meetings (nâŻ=âŻ363). Results show that although some women were aware of their rights to inherit and own land, Kamba women were generally reluctant to claim land resources through local customary institutions and/or land registration processes. This stemmed from a desire to maintain gender dynamics within the household and to maintain their current relational access to land and other livelihood resources. Women, as daughters, sisters, wives, mothers, grandmothers, divorcĂŠe and widows, were found to face vastly different pressures in land resource access. They reported using relational access mechanisms to cope with, and adapt to, land resource constraints. When combined with rights-based mechanisms of access, women could better secure future generationsâ land resource access, especially in cases of skipped-generational households
Progressive changes in microglia and macrophages in spinal cord and peripheral nerve in the transgenic rat model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The role of neuroinflammation in motor neuron death of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is unclear. The human mutant superoxide dismutase-1 (hmSOD1)-expressing murine transgenic model of ALS has provided some insight into changes in microglia activity during disease progression. The purpose of this study was to gain further knowledge by characterizing the immunological changes during disease progression in the spinal cord and peripheral nerve using the more recently developed hmSOD1 rat transgenic model of ALS.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using immunohistochemistry, the extent and intensity of tissue CD11b expression in spinal cord, lumbar nerve roots, and sciatic nerve were evaluated in hmSOD1 rats that were pre-clinical, at clinical onset, and near disease end-stage. Changes in CD11b expression were compared to the detection of MHC class II and CD68 microglial activation markers in the ventral horn of the spinal cord, as well as to the changes in astrocytic GFAP expression.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our study reveals an accumulation of microglia/macrophages both in the spinal cord and peripheral nerve prior to clinical onset based on CD11b tissue expression. The microglia formed focal aggregates in the ventral horn and became more widespread as the disease progressed. Hypertrophic astrocytes were not prominent in the ventral horn until after clinical onset, and the enhancement of GFAP did not have a strong correlation to increased CD11b expression. Detection of MHC class II and CD68 expression was found in the ventral horn only after clinical onset. The macrophages in the ventral nerve root and sciatic nerve of hmSOD1 rats were observed encircling axons.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These findings describe for the first time in the hmSOD1 rat transgenic model of ALS that enhancement of microglia/macrophage activity occurs pre-clinically both in the peripheral nerve and in the spinal cord. CD11b expression is shown to be a superior indicator for early immunological changes compared to other microglia activation markers and astrogliosis. Furthermore, we suggest that the early activity of microglia/macrophages is involved in the early phase of motor neuron degeneration and propose that studies involving immunomodulation in hmSOD1transgenic models need to consider effects on macrophages in peripheral nerves as well as to microglia in the spinal cord.</p
Strain-dependent variation in the early transcriptional response to CNS injury using a cortical explant system
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>While it is clear that inbred strains of mice have variations in immunological responsiveness, the influence of genetic background following tissue damage in the central nervous system is not fully understood. A cortical explant system was employed as a model for injury to determine whether the immediate transcriptional response to tissue resection revealed differences among three mouse strains.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Immunological mRNAs were measured in cerebral cortex from SJL/J, C57BL/6J, and BALB/cJ mice using real time RT-PCR. Freshly isolated cortical tissue and cortical sections incubated in explant medium were examined. Levels of mRNA, normalized to β-actin, were compared using one way analysis of variance with pooled samples from each mouse strain.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In freshly isolated cerebral cortex, transcript levels of many pro-inflammatory mediators were not significantly different among the strains or too low for comparison. Constitutive, baseline amounts of CD74 and antisecretory factor (ASF) mRNAs, however, were higher in SJL/J and C57BL/6J, respectively. When sections of cortical tissue were incubated in explant medium, increased message for a number of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines occurred within five hours. Message for chemokines, IL-1ι, and COX-2 transcripts were higher in C57BL/6J cortical explants relative to SJL/J and BALB/cJ. IL-1β, IL-12/23 p40, and TNF-ι were lower in BALB/cJ explants relative to SJL/J and C57BL/6J. Similar to observations in freshly isolated cortex, CD74 mRNA remained higher in SJL/J explants. The ASF mRNA in SJL/J explants, however, was now lower than levels in both C57BL/6J and BALB/cJ explants.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The short-term cortical explant model employed in this study provides a basic approach to evaluate an early transcriptional response to neurological damage, and can identify expression differences in genes that are influenced by genetic background.</p
Calibrating Type Ia Supernovae using the Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function I. Initial Results
We report the results of an [O III] lambda 5007 survey for planetary nebulae
(PN) in five galaxies that were hosts of well-observed Type Ia supernovae: NGC
524, NGC 1316, NGC 1380, NGC 1448 and NGC 4526. The goals of this survey are to
better quantify the zero-point of the maximum magnitude versus decline rate
relation for supernovae Type Ia and to validate the insensitivity of Type Ia
luminosity to parent stellar population using the host galaxy Hubble type as a
surrogate. We detected a total of 45 planetary nebulae candidates in NGC 1316,
44 candidates in NGC 1380, and 94 candidates in NGC 4526. From these data, and
the empirical planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF), we derive distances
of 17.9 +0.8/-0.9 Mpc, 16.1 +0.8/-1.1 Mpc, and 13.6 +1.3/-1.2 Mpc respectively.
Our derived distance to NGC 4526 has a lower precision due to the likely
presence of Virgo intracluster planetary nebulae in the foreground of this
galaxy. In NGC 524 and NGC 1448 we detected no planetary nebulae candidates
down to the limiting magnitudes of our observations. We present a formalism for
setting realistic distance limits in these two cases, and derive robust lower
limits of 20.9 Mpc and 15.8 Mpc, respectively.
After combining these results with other distances from the PNLF, Cepheid,
and Surface Brightness Fluctuations distance indicators, we calibrate the
optical and near-infrared relations for supernovae Type Ia and we find that the
Hubble constants derived from each of the three methods are broadly consistent,
implying that the properties of supernovae Type Ia do not vary drastically as a
function of stellar population. We determine a preliminary Hubble constant of
H_0 = 77 +/- 3 (random) +/- 5 (systematic) km/s/Mpc for the PNLF, though more
nearby galaxies with high-quality observations are clearly needed.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication by the Astrophysical
