    Turner Contemporary: art inspiring change. social value report (15/16)

    This study focuses on the social value created by Turner Contemporary. The research and analysis was undertaken by the COaST research group at Canterbury Christ Church University on behalf of Turner Contemporary. The methods used are based upon SROI (Social Return on Investment) principles, and set out to measure social value created relative to the value of the resources invested. Data was collected using a range of methods including interviews with key personnel and outside stakeholders, focus groups, workshops, observation, surveys and desk research. The report analyses and calculates the social value created by Turner Contemporary during the gallery’s April 2015–March 2016 financial year. The report is intended to be used in the gallery’s strategic planning by helping the organisation understand where its activities achieve the most social value in relation to its investments, and to manage future return in its business planning. It will also be used as an advocacy document to report to stakeholders, and to support applications for sponsorship, resources and funding

    Range sheep production has been one of the major agricultural enterprises in Utah, particularly in the southwestern part of the state, since these areas were first settled. Stock sheep numbers in Utah were about 2,100,000 by 1890, which is approximately the present number in the state. Since 1890 the numbers have fluctuated between 2,000,000 and 2,775,000. This important industry has, from the time of its introduction, been closely associated with the use of public range lands. The unrestricted grazing of public range lands resulted in damage to a considerable area and was one of the important factors that led to the establishment of federal agencies to administer these properties

    We propose the deterministic rate equation of three-species in the reaction - diffusion system. For this case, our purpose is to carry out the decay process in our three-species reaction-diffusion model of the form A+B+C→DA+B+C\to D. The particle density and the global reaction rate are also shown analytically and numerically on a two-dimensional square lattice with the periodic boundary conditions.     Real world outcomes using 20 mm balloon expandable SAPIEN 3/ultra valves compared to larger valves (23, 26, and 29 mm)-a propensity matched analysis

    OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Small balloon expandable valves have higher echocardiographic transvalvular gradients and rates of prosthesis-patient mismatch (PPM) compared to larger valves. However, the impact of these echocardiographic findings on clinical outcomes is unknown. We sought to determine the clinical outcomes of 20 mm SAPIEN 3 (S3 BEV) compared to larger S3 BEV in relation to echocardiographic hemodynamics. METHODS: Using the STS/ACC transcatheter valve registry, we performed a propensity-matched comparison of patients undergoing treatment of native aortic valve stenosis using transfemoral, balloon-expandable implantation of 20 mm and ≥ 23 mm S3 BEVs. Baseline and procedure characteristics, echocardiographic variables and survival were analyzed. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictors of 1-year mortality. RESULTS: After propensity matching of the 20 mm and ≥ 23 mm SAPIEN 3 valves, 3,931 pairs with comparable baseline characteristics were identified. Small valves were associated with significantly higher echocardiographic gradients at discharge (15.7 ± 7.1 mmHg vs. 11.7 ± 5.5 mmHg, p \u3c 0.0001) and severe PPM rates (21.5% vs. 9.7%, p \u3c 0.0001). There was no significant difference in 1-year all-cause mortality (20 mm: 13.0% vs. ≥23 mm: 12.7%, p = 0.72) or other major adverse event rates and outcomes between the two cohorts. Based on a multivariable analysis, elevated discharge mean gradient (\u3e20 mmHg), severe PPM and the use of 20 mm versus ≥23 mm were not independent predictors of 1-year mortality. CONCLUSION: SAPIEN 3 20 mm valves were associated with higher echocardiographic gradients, and severe PPM rates compared to larger valves but these factors were not associated with significant differences in 1-year all-cause mortality or rehospitalization

    Analysis of slmo, a gene required for normal motor function in Drosophila melanogaster

    The stereotyped motor behaviour of the Drosophila larva provides a useful model for the development and function of neural circuitry. However, the cellular and molecular basis of this behaviour is poorly understood. Reported in this thesis is an analysis of slowmo (slmo), a gene previously shown to be expressed in the developing embryonic central nervous system of Drosophila. Null mutants of slmo are able to hatch, but the resulting larvae exhibit a progressive phenotype of defective locomotor activity. An enhancer trap, P(GAL4)c682, which is inserted in the slmo locus, reports expression in a subset of neurons within the embryonic, larval and adult central nervous systems. Inactivation of marked neurons with tetanus toxin light chain leads to severely impaired motor function, but not total paralysis. Affected embryos are capable of some sporadic movements, but are unable to hatch and normal peristaltic contraction waves are largely absent. The slmo gene is shown to encode a member of a novel family of conserved proteins of unknown function. GFP fusions of Slmo are shown to localise to the mitochondria in a cultured cell line. Two novel slmo related genes, termed pre/i/ (pre!) and real-time (retm), are identified in Drosophila. The prel gene is expressed ubiquitously during embryonic development, and disruption of the gene by a P-insertion results in lethality during larval development. retm encodes a member of a novel subclass of larger Slmo related proteins which contain the conserved CRAL- TRIO domain thought to be involved in the transport of small hydrophobic ligands. GFP fusions of both Prel and Retm are also associated with the mitochondria in cell culture, suggesting this might be true all proteins of this family. Using a yeast-2-hybrid approach, the identification of candidate Slmo interacting proteins is described, providing a basis for future work on the function of Slmo

    Energy and Charged Particle Flow in 10.8 A GeV/c Au+Au Collisions

    Experimental results and a detailed analysis are presented of the transverse energy and charged particle azimuthal distributions measured by the E877 collaboration for different centralities of Au+Au collisions at a beam momentum of 10.8 A GeV/c. The anisotropy of these distributions is studied with respect to the reaction plane reconstructed on an event-by-event basis using the transverse energy distribution measured by calorimeters. Results are corrected for the reaction plane resolution. For semicentral events we observe directed flow signals of up to ten percent. We observe a stronger anisotropy for slow charged particles. For both the charged particle and transverse energy distributions we observe a small but non zero elliptic anisotropy with the major axis pointing into the reaction plane. Combining the information on transverse energy and charged particle flow we obtain information on the flow of nucleons and pions. The data are compared to event generators and the need to introduce a mean field or nucleon-nucleon potential is discussed.Comment: RevTex, 25 pages, 13 figures included as one Postscript file, submitted to Phys.
