Religions and social progress: critical assessments and creative partnerships
This extended version of the published version is also available at www.ipsp.org/downloads.This chapter starts from the premise that some 80 percent of the world’s population
affirms some kind of religious identification, a percentage that is growing rather than
declining. Emphasizing the significance of belief and practice in everyday lives and local
contexts, we analyze the impact of religion and its relevance to social progress in a wide
variety of fields: family, gender, and sexuality; diversity and democracy; conflict and peace;
everyday wellbeing; and care for the earth. We also identify a series of cross-cutting themes
that establish a foundation for policy-making
It\u27s okay, I\u27m a...teacher. Is professional status important to teachers?
Teacher accountability and the debate around teacher quality are issues of international importance. As society places increasing demands on the teaching profession, and regulatory bodies around the globe raise the ‘standards’ for teachers to adhere to, the professional status of teachers is drawn into focus. This paper reports research findings of an investigation into the perspectives of professional status of teachers, held by pre-service teachers about to embark on their teaching career. This was a comparative study whereby data were collected from an Australian university and an American university to explore professional status as an international issue. This quantitative study utilised a Likert scale to gather responses from participants. Data were analysed and findings from both universities indicated that professional status was a significant concern for pre-service teachers. Pre-service teachers felt that whilst they may have entered their teaching degree as a vocation, they hoped to receive status, as a professional, within society

Simulation of pyroshock environments using a tunable resonant fixture
Disclosed are a method and apparatus for simulating pyrotechnic shock for the purpose of qualifying electronic components for use in weapons, satellite, and aerospace applications. According to the invention, a single resonant bar fixture has an adjustable resonant frequency in order to exhibit a desired shock response spectrum upon mechanical impact. The invention eliminates the need for availability of a large number of different fixtures, capable of exhibiting a range of shock response characteristics, in favor of a single tunable system
Experimental Evaluation of Mountain Bike Suspension Systems
A significant distinction between competitive mountain bikes is whether they have a suspension system. Research studies indicate that a suspension system gives advantages, but it is difficult to quantify the benefits because they depend on so many variables, including the physiology and psychology of the cyclist, the roughness of the track and the design of the suspension system. A laboratory based test rig has been built that allows the number of variables in the system to be reduced and test conditions to be controlled. The test rig simulates regular impacts of the rear wheel with bumps in a rolling road. The physiological variables of oxygen consumption and heart rate were measured, together with speeds and forces at various points in the system. Physiological and mechanical test results both confirm a significant benefit in using a suspension system on the simulated rough track, with oxygen consumption reduced by around 30 % and power transmitted through the pedals reduced by 30 % to 60 %
Flows driven by Banach space-valued rough paths
We show in this note how the machinery of C^1-approximate flows devised in
the work "Flows driven by rough paths", and applied there to reprove and extend
most of the results on Banach space-valued rough differential equations driven
by a finite dimensional rough path, can be used to deal with rough differential
equations driven by an infinite dimensional Banach space-valued weak geometric

Recent Developments in Phyroshock Simulation Using Fixtures With Tunable Resonant Frequencies
Pyroshock is a potentially severe environment produced by the detonation of explosively actuated components and stage separation hardware. Electronic components exposed to pyroshock events during flight or deployment can be damaged by this high frequency, high G shock. Flight qualification of these components may be accomplished using one of many existing techniques to simulate the pyroshock environment in the laboratory. Two new techniques developed at Sandia National Laboratories allow larger components to be tested to a wide variety of pyroshock environments. The frequency content and amplitude of the simulated pyroshock can be easily controlled in a predictable manner. The pyroshock environment is produced by the resonant response of a test fixture that has been excited by a mechanical impact. The resonant fixture has a dominant frequency that can be continuously adjusted over a frequency range that is typically found in most pyroshock environments. The test apparatus and techniques utilized by each method will be described in this paper. Experimental results will be presented which illustrate the capabilities of each method
