    The radiation emitted from dry and wet snowpack in the microwave region (1 to 100 GHz) is discussed and related to ground observations. Results from theoretical model calculations match the brightness temperatures obtained by truck mounted, airborne and spaceborne microwave sensor systems. Snow wetness and internal layer structure complicate the snow parameter retrieval algorithm. Further understanding of electromagnetic interaction with snowpack may eventually provide a technique to probe the internal snow propertie

    The microwave brightness temperature measurements for Nimbus-5 electrically scanned microwave radiometer and Nimbus E microwave spectrometer are used to retrieve the atmospheric water vapor, liquid water and wind speed by a quasi-statistical retrieval technique. It is shown that the brightness temperature can be utilized to yield these parameters under various weather conditions. Observations at 19.35 GHz, 22.235 GHz and 31.4 GHz were input to the regression equations. The retrieved values of these parameters for portions of two Nimbus-5 orbits are presented. Then comparison between the retrieved parameters and the available observations on the total water vapor content and the surface wind speed are made. The estimated errors for retrieval are approximately 0.15 g/sq cm for water vapor content, 6.5 mg/sq cm for liquid water content and 6.6 m/sec for surface wind speed

    Energy spectra of donors in GaAs-Ga_(1-x)Al_(x)As quantum well structures in the effective mass approximation

    We present the results of a study of the energy spectrum of the ground state and the low-lying excited states for shallow donors in quantum well structures consisting of a single slab of GaAs sandwiched between two semi-infinite layers of Ga_(1-x)Al_(x)As. The effect of the position of the impurity atom within central GaAs slab is investigated for different slab thicknesses and alloy compositions. Two limiting cases are presented: one in which the impurity atom is located at the center of the quantum well (on-center impurity), the other in which the impurity atom is located at the edge of the quantum well (on-edge impurity). Both the on-center and the on-edge donor ground state are bound for all values of GaAs slab thicknesses and alloy compositions. The alloy composition x is varied between 0.1 and 0.4. In this composition range, Ga_(1-x)Al_(x)As is direct, and the single-valley effective-mass theory is a valid technique for treating shallow donor states. Calculations are carried out in the case of finite potential barriers determined by realistic conduction-band offsets

    Modern CFD applications for the design of a reacting shear layer facility

    The RPLUS2D code, capable of calculating high speed reacting flows, was adopted to design a compressible shear layer facility. In order to create reacting shear layers at high convective Mach numbers, hot air streams at supersonic speeds, rendered by converging-diverging nozzles, must be provided. A finite rate chemistry model is used to simulate the nozzle flows. Results are compared with one-dimensional solutions at chemical equilibrium. Additionally, a two equation turbulence model with compressibility effects was successfully incorporated with the RPLUS code. The model was applied to simulate a supersonic shear layer. Preliminary results show favorable comparisons with the experimental data

    Microwave emission from dry and wet snow

    A microscopic model was developed to study the microwave emission from snow. In this model, the individual snow particles are considered to be the scattering centers. Mie scattering theory for spherical particles is then used to compute the volume scattering and extinction coefficients of the closely packed scattering spheres, which are assumed not to interact coherently. The results of the computations show significant volume scattering effects in the microwave region which result in low observed emissivities from cold, dry snow. In the case of wet snow, the microwave emissivities are increased considerably, in agreement with earlier experimental observations in which the brightness temperatures have increased significantly at the onset of melting

    Estimating Price Effects in an Almost Ideal Demand Model of Outbound Thai Tourism to East Asia

    This paper analyzes the responsiveness of Thai outbound tourism to East Asian destinations, namely China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and Korea, to changes in effective relative price of tourism, total real total tourism expenditure, and one-off events. The nonlinear and linear Almost Ideal Demand (AID) models are estimated with monthly data to identify the price competitiveness and interdependencies of tourism demand for competing destinations in both long run (static) and short run error correction (dynamic) specifications. The homogeneity and symmetry restricted long run and short run AID models are estimated to calculate elasticities. The income elasticities, and the compensated and uncompensated own-price and cross-price elasticities, provide useful information for public and private tourism agents at the various destinations to maintain and improve price competitiveness. The empirical results show that price competitiveness is important for tourism demand for Japan, Korea and Hong Kong in the long run, and for Hong Kong and Taiwan in the short run. With regard to long run cross-price elasticities, the substitution effect can be found in the following pairs of destinations: China-Korea, Japan-Hong Kong, Taiwan-Hong Kong, Japan-Korea, and Taiwan-Korea. In addition to the substitution effect, the complementary effect can be found in the following pairs of destinations: China-Hong Kong, China-Japan, China-Taiwan, Japan-Taiwan, and Korea-Hong Kong. Contrary to the findings obtained from the long run AID specification, Japan-Korea and Taiwan-Korea are complements in the short run. Furthermore, the real total tourism expenditure elasticities indicate that China’s share of real total tourism expenditure is inelastic in response to a change in real total tourism expenditure, while Korea’s share of real total tourism expenditure is most sensitive to changes in expenditure in the long run.
