Detection of bearing failure in mechanical devices using neural networks
We present a novel time-domain method for the detection of faulty bearings that has direct applicability to monitoring the health of the turbo pumps on the Space Shuttle Main Engine. A feed-forward neural network was trained to detect modelled roller bearing faults on the basis of the periodicity of impact pulse trains. The network's performance was dependent upon the number of pulses in the network's input window and the signal-to-noise ratio of the input signal. To test the model's validity, we fit the model's parameters to an actual vibration signal generated by a faulty roller element bearing and applied the network trained on this model to detect faults in actual vibration data. When this network was tested on the actual vibration data, it correctly identified the vibration signal as a fault condition 76 percent of the time
Statistical physics and stromatolite growth: new perspectives on an ancient dilemma
This paper outlines our recent attempts to model the growth and form of
microbialites from the perspective of the statistical physics of evolving
surfaces. Microbialites arise from the environmental interactions of microbial
communities (microbial mats). The mats evolve over time to form internally
laminated organosedimentary structures (stromatolites). Modern day
stromatolites exist in only a few locations, whereas ancient stromatolitic
microbialites were the only form of life for much of the Earth's history. They
existed in a wide variety of growth forms, ranging from almost perfect cones to
branched columnar structures. The coniform structures are central to the heated
debate on the oldest evidence of life. We proposed a biotic model which
considers the relationship between upward growth of a phototropic or
phototactic biofilm and mineral accretion normal to the surface. These
processes are sufficient to account for the growth and form of many ancient
stromatolities. These include domical stromatolites and coniform structures
with thickened apical zones typical of Conophyton. More angular coniform
structures, similar to the stromatolites claimed as the oldest macroscopic
evidence of life, form when the photic effects dominate over mineral accretion.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. To be published in Proceedings of StatPhys-Taiwan

The effect of developmental vitamin D deficiency in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats on decision-making using a rodent gambling task
Developmental vitamin D (DVD) deficiency is a plausible risk factor for schizophrenia that has been associated with behavioural alterations including disruptions in latent inhibition and response inhibition. The rodent gambling task (rGT) assesses risk-based decision-making, which is a key cognitive deficit observed in schizophrenia patients. The primary aim of this study was to examine risk-based decision-making in DVD-deficient and control rats on the rGT. We also evaluated the performance of female Sprague–Dawley rats on the rGT for the first time. Adult male and female Sprague–Dawley rats from control and vitamin D deficient dams were trained to perform the rGT in standard operant chambers and their performance and choice-preferences were assessed. Female rats were significantly faster to reach rGT training criteria compared with male rats and DVD-deficient rats were faster to reach training criteria than control animals. After reaching stable performance on the rGT DVD-deficient and control rats showed a significant preference for the optimal choice-option in the rGT, but there were no significant effects of sex or diet on these responses. DVD deficiency did not alter the decision-making processes on the rGT because no significant changes in choice-preferences were evident. This is the first study to demonstrate that once established, the performance of females is comparable to male Sprague–Dawley rats on the rGT
Biofilm formation and virulence expression by Streptococcus mutans are altered when grown in dual-species model
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Microbial cell-cell interactions in the oral flora are believed to play an integral role in the development of dental plaque and ultimately, its pathogenicity. The effects of other species of oral bacteria on biofilm formation and virulence gene expression by <it>Streptococcus mutans</it>, the primary etiologic agent of dental caries, were evaluated using a dual-species biofilm model and RealTime-PCR analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>As compared to mono-species biofilms, biofilm formation by <it>S. mutans </it>was significantly decreased when grown with <it>Streptococcus sanguinis</it>, but was modestly increased when co-cultivated with <it>Lactobacillus casei</it>. Co-cultivation with <it>S. mutans </it>significantly enhanced biofilm formation by <it>Streptococcus oralis </it>and <it>L. casei</it>, as compared to the respective mono-species biofilms. RealTime-PCR analysis showed that expression of <it>spaP </it>(for multi-functional adhesin SpaP, a surface-associated protein that <it>S. mutans </it>uses to bind to the tooth surface in the absence of sucrose), <it>gtfB </it>(for glucosyltransferase B that synthesizes α1,6-linked glucan polymers from sucrose and starch carbohydrates) and <it>gbpB </it>(for surface-associated protein GbpB, which binds to the glucan polymers) was decreased significantly when <it>S. mutans </it>were co-cultivated with <it>L. casei</it>. Similar results were also found with expression of <it>spaP </it>and <it>gbpB</it>, but not <it>gtfB</it>, when <it>S. mutans </it>was grown in biofilms with <it>S. oralis</it>. Compared to mono-species biofilms, the expression of <it>luxS </it>in <it>S. mutans </it>co-cultivated with <it>S. oralis </it>or <it>L. casei </it>was also significantly decreased. No significant differences were observed in expression of the selected genes when <it>S. mutans </it>was co-cultivated with <it>S. sanguinis</it>.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that the presence of specific oral bacteria differentially affects biofilm formation and virulence gene expression by <it>S. mutans</it>.</p
Developmentally vitamin D-deficient rats show enhanced prepulse inhibition after acute δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol
Developmental vitamin D (DVD) deficiency has been proposed as a risk factor for schizophrenia. DVD-deficient rats show selective cognitive deficits and novelty-induced hyperlocomotion and enhanced locomotor responses from acute treatment with psychomimetic drugs, such as amphetamine and MK-801. Here we aimed to examine the effect of a drug from a different class of psychomimetic/psychoactive compounds, Δ-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), on tasks of relevance to the cognitive and positive symptoms of schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to investigate whether DVD deficiency modulates the behavioural effects of THC on tests of delay-dependent memory, sensorimotor gating and locomotion. Adult control and DVD-deficient rats were injected with THC (0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.25, 2.5 mg/kg) 15 min before a delay match to sample (DMTS) task using variable delays (0-24 s). A separate group of rats was injected with either 2.5 mg/kg THC or vehicle before tests of either prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response or in the open field. Control and DVD-deficient rats showed a similar dose-dependent impairment in performance on the DMTS. The greatest impairment was observed at 2.5 mg/kg for all delays (0-24 s). DVD-deficient rats showed THC-induced enhancement of PPI, which was not observed in control rats. There was no effect of maternal diet on acoustic startle response or locomotor responses in the open field. This study reports the novel findings that DVD-deficient rats were more sensitive to the acute effects of THC on PPI. It appears that prenatal vitamin D deficiency has long-term effects on sensitivity to the behavioural effects of cannabinoids
Genetic Analysis of the Functions and Interactions of Components of the LevQRST Signal Transduction Complex of Streptococcus mutans
Transcription of the genes for a fructan hydrolase (fruA) and a
fructose/mannose sugar:phosphotransferase permease (levDEFG) in
Streptococcus mutans is activated by a four-component
regulatory system consisting of a histidine kinase (LevS), a response regulator
(LevR) and two carbohydrate-binding proteins (LevQT). The expression of the
fruA and levD operons was at baseline in a
levQ mutant and substantially decreased in a
levT null mutant, with lower expression with the cognate
inducers fructose or mannose, but slightly higher expression in glucose or
galactose. A strain expressing levQ with two point mutations
(E170A/F292S) did not require inducers to activate gene expression and displayed
altered levD expression when growing on various carbohydrates,
including cellobiose. Linker-scanning (LS) mutagenesis was used to generate
three libraries of mutants of levQ, levS and
levT that displayed various levels of altered substrate
specificity and of fruA/levD gene expression. The data support
that LevQ and LevT are intimately involved in the sensing of carbohydrate
signals, and that LevQ appears to be required for the integrity of the signal
transduction complex, apparently by interacting with the sensor kinase LevS
Shocklets and Short Large Amplitude Magnetic Structures (SLAMS) in the high Mach foreshock of Venus
Shocklets and short large-amplitude magnetic structures (SLAMS) are steepened magnetic fluctuations commonly found in Earth's upstream foreshock. Here we present Venus Express observations from the 26th of February 2009 establishing their existence in the steady-state foreshock of Venus, building on a past study which found SLAMS during a substantial disturbance of the induced magnetosphere. The Venusian structures were comparable to those reported near Earth. The 2 Shocklets had magnetic compression ratios of 1.23 and 1.34 with linear polarization in the spacecraft frame. The 3 SLAMS had ratios between 3.22 and 4.03, two of which with elliptical polarization in the spacecraft frame. Statistical analysis suggests SLAMS coincide with unusually high solar wind Alfvén mach-number at Venus (12.5, this event). Thus, while we establish Shocklets and SLAMS can form in the stable Venusian foreshock, they may be rarer than at Earth. We estimate a lower limit of their occurrence rate of ≳14%
Space Weather in the Saturn–Titan System
New evidence based on Cassini magnetic field and plasma data has revealed that the discovery of Titan outside Saturn’s magnetosphere during the T96 flyby on 2013 December 1 was the result of the impact of two consecutive interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) that left the Sun in 2013 early November and interacted with the moon and the planet. We study the dynamic evolution of Saturn´s magnetopause and bow shock, which evidences a magnetospheric compression from late November 28 to December 4 (at least), under prevailing solar wind dynamic pressures of 0.16-0.3 nPa. During this interval, transient disturbances associated with the two ICMEs are observed, allowing for the identification of their magnetic structures. By analyzing the magnetic field direction, and the pressure balance in Titan’s induced magnetosphere, we show that Cassini finds Saturn’s moon embedded in the second ICME after being swept by its interplanetary shock and amid a shower of solar energetic particles that may have caused dramatic changes in the moon’s lower ionosphere. Analyzing a list of Saturn´s bow shock crossings during 2004-2016, we find that the magnetospheric compression needed for Titan to be in the supersonic solar wind can be generally associated with the presence of an ICME or a corotating interaction region. This leads to the conclusion that Titan would rarely face the pristine solar wind, but would rather interact with transient solar structures under extreme space weather conditions.Fil: Burne TobÃas, SofÃa Helga. Identifying chemokines as therapeutic targets in renal disease: Lessons from antagonist studies and knockout mice
Chemokines, in concert with cytokines and adhesion molecules, play multiple roles in local and systemic immune responses. In the kidney, the temporal and spatial expression of chemokines correlates with local renal damage and accumulation of chemokine receptor-bearing leukocytes. Chemokines play important roles in leukocyte trafficking and blocking chemokines can effectively reduce renal leukocyte recruitment and subsequent renal damage. However, recent data indicate that blocking chemokine or chemokine receptor activity in renal disease may also exacerbate renal inflammation under certain conditions. An increasing amount of data indicates additional roles of chemokines in the regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses, which may adversively affect the outcome of interventional studies. This review summarizes available in vivo studies on the blockade of chemokines and chemokine receptors in kidney diseases, with a special focus on the therapeutic potential of anti-chemokine strategies, including potential side effects, in renal disease.
