High-resolution crystal structure of C-Phycocyanin and polarized optical spectra of single crystals
Effect of protein environment and the excitonic coupling on the excited-state properties of the bilinchromophores in C-Phycocyanin
GMRT Observations of the 2006 outburst of the Nova RS Ophiuchi: First detection of emission at radio frequencies < 1.4 GHz
The first low radio frequency (<1.4 GHz) detection of the outburst of the
recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi is presented in this letter. Radio emission was
detected at 0.61 GHz on day 20 with a flux density of ~48 mJy and at 0.325 GHz
on day 38 with a flux density of ~ 44 mJy. This is in contrast with the 1985
outburst when it was not detected at 0.327 GHz even on day 66. The emission at
low radio frequencies is clearly non-thermal and is well-explained by a
synchrotron spectrum of index alpha ~ -0.8 (S propto nu^alpha) suffering
foreground absorption due to the pre-existing, ionized, warm, clumpy red giant
wind. The absence of low frequency radio emission in 1985 and the earlier
turn-on of the radio flux in the current outburst are interpreted as being due
to higher foreground absorption in 1985 compared to that in 2006, suggesting
that the overlying wind densities in 2006 are only ~30% of those in 1985.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure. Accepted for publication in ApJ
Super-Extremal Spinning Black Holes via Accretion
A Kerr black hole with mass and angular momentum satisfies the
extremality inequality . In the presence of matter and/or
gravitational radiation, this bound needs to be reformulated in terms of local
measurements of the mass and the angular momentum directly associated with the
black hole. The isolated and dynamical horizon framework provides such
quasi-local characterization of black hole mass and angular momentum. With this
framework, it is possible in axisymmetry to reformulate the extremality limit
as , with the irreducible mass of the black hole
computed from its apparent horizon area and obtained using approximate
rotational Killing vectors on the apparent horizon. The
condition is also equivalent to requiring a non-negative black hole surface
gravity. We present numerical experiments of an accreting black hole that
temporarily violates this extremality inequality. The initial configuration
consists of a single, rotating black hole surrounded by a thick, shell cloud of
negative energy density. For these numerical experiments, we introduce a new
matter-without-matter evolution method.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of the Expanding Nebular Remnant of the Recurrent Nova RS Ophiuchi (2006)
We report Hubble Space Telescope imaging obtained 155 days after the 2006
outburst of RS Ophiuchi. We detect extended emission in both [O III] and [Ne V]
lines. In both lines, the remnant has a double ring structure. The E-W
orientation and total extent of these structures (580+-50 AU at d=1.6kpc) is
consistent with that expected due to expansion of emitting regions imaged
earlier in the outburst at radio wavelengths. Expansion at high velocity
appears to have been roughly constant in the E-W direction (v_{exp} = 3200+-300
km/s in the plane of the sky), with tentative evidence of deceleration N-S. We
present a bipolar model of the remnant whose inclination is consistent with
that of the central binary. The true expansion velocities of the polar
components are then v = 5600+-1100 km/s. We suggest that the bipolar morphology
of the remnant results from interaction of the outburst ejecta with a
circumstellar medium that is significantly denser in the equatorial regions of
the binary than at the poles. This is also consistent with observations of
shock evolution in the X-ray and the possible presence of dust in the infrared.
Furthermore, it is in line with models of the shaping of planetary nebulae with
close binary central systems, and also with recent observations relating to the
progenitors of Type Ia supernovae, for which recurrent novae are a proposed
candidate. Our observations also reveal more extended structures to the S and E
of the remnant whose possible origin is briefly discussed.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
ZZE-Configuration of chromophore ß-153 in C-phycocyanin from Mastigocladus laminosus
The photochemistry of C-phycocyanin has been studied after denaturation in the dark. It shows
an irreversible reaction which has characteristics of a Ζ,Ζ,Ε- to Z,Z,Z-isomerization of dihydrobilins.
Its amplitude depends on the reaction conditions, with a maximum corresponding to 15%
conversion of one of the three PC chromophores. This chromophore is suggested to be ß-153, for
which recent X-ray data T. Schirmer, W. Bode, and R. Huber, J. Mol. Biol., submitted, show
ring D being highly twisted out of the plane of the other rings. During unfolding, there is thus a
probability of falling into the photochemically labile Z,Z,^-configuration
Optimal placement of a limited number of observations for period searches
Robotic telescopes present the opportunity for the sparse temporal placement
of observations when period searching. We address the best way to place a
limited number of observations to cover the dynamic range of frequencies
required by an observer. We show that an observation distribution geometrically
spaced in time can minimise aliasing effects arising from sparse sampling,
substantially improving signal detection quality. The base of the geometric
series is however a critical factor in the overall success of this strategy.
Further, we show that for such an optimal distribution observations may be
reordered, as long as the distribution of spacings is preserved, with almost no
loss of quality. This implies that optimal observing strategies can retain
significant flexibility in the face of scheduling constraints, by providing
scope for on-the-fly adaptation. Finally, we present optimal geometric
samplings for a wide range of common observing scenarios, with an emphasis on
practical application by the observer at the telescope. Such a sampling
represents the best practical empirical solution to the undersampling problem
that we are aware of. The technique has applications to robotic telescope and
satellite observing strategies, where target acquisition overheads mean that a
greater total target exposure time (and hence signal-to-noise) can often in
practice be achieved by limiting the number of observations.Comment: 8 pages with 16 figure
Scaling of magnetic monopoles in the pure compact QED
In the pure U(1) lattice gauge theory with the Villain action we find that
the monopole mass in the Coulomb phase and the monopole condensate in the
confinement phase scale according to simple power laws. This holds outside the
coupling region in which on finite toroidal lattices the metastability
phenomena occur. A natural explanation of the observed accuracy of the scaling
behaviour would be the second order of the phase transition between both phases
