The Chaotic Relationship between Oil Return, Gold, Silver and Copper Returns in TURKEY: Non-Linear ARDL and Augmented Non-linear Granger Causality

AbstractThe structure of the relationship between oil prices, gold price, silver price and copper price are not only important for economists but also for policymakers since it contributes to the policy debate on the link between variables and co-movement of the variables. In this paper, the relationship between oil prices and the price of gold and silver was analysed by BDS test, non-linear ARDL approach and two non-linear Granger causality methods for 1973:1 – 2012:11 period in Turkey. This study complements previous empirical papers. However, it differs from the existing literature with simultaneous use of nonlinear ARDL and two non-linear causality model: Hiemstra and Jones (1994) non-linear causality and augmented granger causality developed by this paper. The main findings of this paper are: (a) the gold price level showed positive asymmetric response to changes in the oil price in the short-- and long-run. The gold price probably possesses some market power and it is a means of store of value. Because of the exception of gold, there is a substantial sluggishness in the adaption to changes in demand. In the long run the exception of gold lags and adjustment costs should play a smaller part; b) there is a unique long-term relationship between oil prices and the prices of gold, silver and cooper; and (c) there is a unidirectional Granger causality between oil price and precious metal price

Six miRNA expressions in the saliva of smokers and non-smokers with periodontal disease

BackgroundIt has been stated that microRNA (miRNA) plays an important role in development, homeostasis, and immune functions, and abnormal miRNA expression may cause faster disease progression. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to determine miR-203, miR-142-3p, miR-146a, miR-146b, miR-155, and miR-29b gene expressions in the saliva of smokers and non-smokers with the periodontal disease before and after non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). MethodsA total of 90 individuals, 30 with periodontitis, 30 with gingivitis, and 30 periodontally healthy (control group), were included. These three groups were divided into subgroups as smoking and non-smoking individuals, with 15 people in each group. NSPT was applied to patients with periodontitis and gingivitis. Saliva samples and clinical parameters were obtained at baseline and repeated 6 weeks after NSPT. ResultsSaliva miR-203, miR-142-3p, miR-146a, miR-146b, and miR-155 gene expressions were significantly upregulated in patients with periodontal disease compared to the control group both in smokers and non-smokers, and also these miRNAs' gene expressions were significantly higher in the periodontitis group than in the gingivitis group at baseline (p .05). ConclusionsThese results suggest that salivary miR-146a, miR-146b, miR142-3p, miR-155, and miR-203 gene expressions increased with the progression of periodontal disease, but unchanged after periodontal treatment. Moreover, smoking may contribute to an increase in the levels of salivary miR-142-3p in the periodontal health and disease

Distance laboratory applications ERRL: A study on radio communication in electronic field

In the last decade, the effect of internet usage in education is gradually increased. When we look from academic perspective, the new technologies provided alternatives for students learning. As distance education becomes important everyday, the indispensable elements of teaching and education, laboratories must be reachable via remote connection. Consequently, the education that is going to be given to the students will be more flexible with respect to place and time constraints and students can reach laboratory facilities at any time and anywhere not only in lectures and practical hours. In this study, European Remote Radio Laboratory (ERRL) which is a distance remote Radio Frequency (RF) laboratory designed for electrical-electronics students, is described generally. TİCARİ BANKALARIN AKTİF KARLILIĞINI ETKİLEYEN MAKROEKONOMİK DEĞİŞKENLERİN BELİRLENMESİ

Bu çalışmada Türkiye’deki ticari bankaların aktif karlılığını etkileyen makroekonomik faktörlerin tespiti amaçlanmıştır. Bu çerçevede, 2009-2016 dönemine ait BIST-banka endeksinden seçilen on bir adet bankanın mali verilerinden elde edilen sektör ortalama aktif karlılığı (ROA) ile enflasyon oranı, faiz oranı, ekonomik büyüme oranı, USD kuru gibi makroekonomik değişkenlerin etkileşimleri incelenmiştir. Çalışmada, değişik veri yapılarına uyum sağlayabilme yeteneği ve yapısal esnekliği nedeniyle Çok Değişkenli Uyarlayıcı Regresyon Uzanımları (MARS) yöntemi tercih edilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmada enflasyon oranı ve döviz kurunun ROA üzerinde etkisi olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Buna göre, enflasyon artışı eşik değere kadar ROA’yı arttırırken bu nokta aşıldıktan sonra ROA’yı azaltıcı yönde etki yapmaktadır. Nominal dolar kurunun artışı ise ROA’ya artan oranda katkı sağlarken eşik değer aşıldıktan sonra ROA’ya olan katkısı sabit kalmaktadır
