A Comparative Study of Applying Active-Set and Interior Point Methods in MPC for Controlling Nonlinear pH Process

    Get PDF
A comparative study of Model Predictive Control (MPC) using active-set method and interior point methods is proposed as a control technique for highly non-linear pH process. The process is a strong acid-strong base system. A strong acid of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and a strong base of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) with the presence of buffer solution sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) are used in a neutralization process flowing into reactor. The non-linear pH neutralization model governed in this process is presented by multi-linear models. Performance of both controllers is studied by evaluating its ability of set-point tracking and disturbance-rejection. Besides, the optimization time is compared between these two methods; both MPC shows the similar performance with no overshoot, offset, and oscillation. However, the conventional active-set method gives a shorter control action time for small scale optimization problem compared to MPC using IPM method for pH control

Model predictive control of pH neutralization processes: a review

    Get PDF
The paper provides a review of the different approaches of Model Predictive Control (MPC) to deal with the nonlinearities and transient behavior associated with pH and its control. Firstly a description of the pH system and what makes it difficult to control is presented, followed by the general description of the structure of MPC. The different applications of MPC vary mostly in the way the model is described and how the optimization is carried out to obtain the desired control action. The different modeling techniques applied to the MPC, which is used to describe the behavior of the pH are ranging from simple linear models, multiple linear models like piecewise linear descriptions and fuzzy models, to nonlinear descriptions like Wiener models and the use of artificial neural networks. The models and their respective ways of application are reviewed. Finally, the areas where more research is needed are addressed

CFD analysis chlorine gas dispersion in indoor storage: temperatures with wind velocities effect studies

    Get PDF
Most of the industrial chemical products encounter natural environmental risk in the process. The indoor release of hazardous dense gases is especial topic for discussion nowadays because the clouds of heavier gases have a tendency to stay near the ground level, causing fatal and injuries the people. In this article a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT was employed in order to model the accidental indoor dispersion of chlorine from a small undetected leak in an indoor industrial space. The results of simulation represented that the chlorine gas spread would behave like liquid and flows on the floor, also the concentration of chlorine increased to above the ground level slowly. The effects of various temperatures and wind velocities on dispersion of heavier gas will help to better identify the potential risks. In this paper, the effects of the environmental situations with the release and spread of chlorine in the indoor space were meticulously examined

The objective of this study is to determine the influence of hedonic shopping motivations comprising adventure shopping, gratification, role shopping, value shopping, social shopping, and idea shopping gender towards consumers’ buying decision. The respondents of this study are consumers at Hardy’s Mall Singaraja. Purposive sampling method was employed in choosing the qualified respondents who fit certain criteria namely the consumers have visited the mall and shopped more than twice and were at least graduated from senior or vocational high-school. The number of sample involved in this study is 360 respondents. The data were obtained from respondents’ responses on the questionnaires. SPSS’ dummy regression was employed to test the hypotheses. The findings demonstrate that: (1) the adventure shopping motivation positively and significantly influences buying decision, (2) the gratification shopping motivation positively but not significantly influences buying decision, (3) the role shopping motivation positively and significantly influences buying decision, (4) value shopping motivation positively and significantly influences buying decision, (5) social shopping motivation positively and significantly influences buying decision, (6) idea shopping motivation positively and significantly influences buying decision, and (7) gender significantly affects buying decision. In addition, this study indicates that value shopping motivation has prevailing influence on buying decision and that female consumers tend to be more dominant than males to shop at Hardy’s Mall Singaraja. Keywords: Hedonic shopping motivations, gender, buying decision
