THE IMPACT OF DEFENCE INTEGRATORS AND STANDARDS ON VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL INNOVATION IN THE DEFENCE INDUSTRY

    No full text
This paper analyses the extent and character of product innovation in defence technologies where there are strong network effects, but where there is not a generally accepted system of open standards. Specifically, we examine the implications for innovation from the development of network-centric defence agencies accompanied by the creation of system integrators in the defence industry. The results show that although these developments are expected to have a number of positive impacts, such as enhanced security and gate-keeping of the relevant technologies, they are also likely to have an adverse effect on the available variety of new defence products.Defence industry, Innovation, Integrators, Network, Standards,

Entry, Growth and Patenting in Industrial Clusters: A Study of the Aerospace Industry in the UK

    Get PDF
This paper studies how firm performance is influenced by the strength of the industrial cluster (or industrial district) in which it is located. The paper presents estimates of firm-level employment and patent growth models for a range of '5-digit' aerospace industries in the UK. In these models, employment in the firm's own sector and employment in other sectors is taken as a measure of the strength of the cluster. Strong positive clustering effects are found in many sectors, but nevertheless some clustering effects are negative. Entry into clusters of this industry is also examined and some sectors are found to attract new entry while others are only attracted.Industrial Clusters, Firm Performance, Innovation, Entry, Aerospace,

    Strategic Process And Product Innovation

    No full text
The study analyzes the timing of process and product innovations. A dynamic product differentiation model illustrates strategic interaction in a duopoly. Firms use asymmetric equilibrium strategies for the adoption of innovations, i.e. innovations are adopted sequentially. The priority of process innovation over product innovation depends on the relative magnitude of the two innovations. Empirical evidence from the semiconductor industry illustrates asymmetric adoption patterns for innovations.Product and process innovation, game theory, semiconductor industry J.E.L. classification: L19, 031,
