    Difference of high-light stress sensitivity in the two firs, Abies mariesii and Abies veitchii, in early spring

    Abies veitchii and Abies mariesii are dominant species at the tree-line in Central Japan. Recently, we observed needle death, probably due to photodamage of the photosynthetic apparatus at the tree-limit during March-April. A. veitchii survives winter without any needle death due to photodamage at the tree-line. However, there is no conspicuous damage between the two species because this phenomenon is only observed at the tree-limit. In this study, we examined the difference in winter down-regulation of PS II between A. veitchii and A. mariesii and observed the following results: In March, (1) Fv/Fm of both species was about 0.1, showing the photochemical efficiency being severely inhibited. (2) The de-epoxidation state, expressed as [(A+Z)/(V+A+Z)], was about 0.35 for both species. (3) Chlorophyll (Chl) content of A. veitchii was much less than that of A. mariesii and Pchlide was found only in A. veitchii. In April, (1) Fv/Fm increased and [(A+Z)/(V+A+Z)] decreased for both species. (2) Chl content of A. veitchii increased by four-fold while Pchlide nearly dissappeared. These results indicate the following: During cold periods, most of Chl of A. veitchii may have been converted to Pchlide which is easily re-converted to Chl in spring, an intermediate of Chl biosynthesis. Winter conversion from Chl to Pchlide in A. veitchii may provide effective protection from photodamage of the photosynthetic apparatus. Furthermore, this may explain the higher ability of A. veitchii to prevent photodamage compared to A. mariesii

Subjects were 398 undergraduate students, who were asked to perform a set of questionnaires on dependence tendency and parents-child relationship. The results of this study showed that sex differences, existence of sibling, wether living with parents, and school year affect on their dependence tendency and parents-child relationship

    Noticeable Reverse Shift in the Melting Temperatures of Benzene and Carbon Tetrachloride Confined within the Micropores and Mesopores of Hydrophobic Carbons

    Carbon aerogels contain both mesopores and micropores. In this study, benzene/CCl4 was adsorbed in the pores of carbon aerogels (both mesopores and micropores) and their phase behaviours were examined using differential scanning calorimetry. The bulk solid benzene melted at 278 K and the melting temperatures of benzene confined inside the mesopores and micropores of carbon aerogels were 258 and 293 K, respectively. Although the melting temperature depression of condensates in mesopores is well known, the observed elevation of the melting temperature for micropores is very limited in the strongly interacted system. Similar melting behaviours were observed for the confined CCl4; depression by 45 K in mesopores and elevation by 48 K in micropores showed about two times the change as compared with that of confined benzene.ArticleADSORPTION SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY. 31(2-3):145-151 (2013)journal articl

    Model-Free Idealization: Adaptive Integrated Approach for Idealization of Ion Channel Currents (AI2)

    Single-channel electrophysiological recordings provide insights into transmembrane ion permeation and channel gating mechanisms. The first step in the analysis of the recorded currents involves an "idealization" process, in which noisy raw data are classified into two discrete levels corresponding to the open and closed states of channels. This provides valuable information on the gating kinetics of ion channels. However, the idealization step is often challenging in cases of currents with poor signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and baseline drifts, especially when the gating model of the target channel is not identified. We report herein on a highly robust model-free idealization method for achieving this goal. The algorithm, called AI2 (Adaptive Integrated Approach for the Idealization of Ion Channel Currents), is composed of Kalman filter and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) clustering and functions without user input. AI2 automatically determines the noise reduction setting based on the degree of separation between the open and closed levels. We validated the method on pseudo-channel-current datasets which contain either computed or experimentally recorded noise. The AI2 algorithm was then tested on actual experimental data for biological channels including gramicidin A, a voltage-gated sodium channel, and other unidentified channels.
