Structure and Phase Transitions of Alkyl Chains on Mica
We use molecular dynamics as a tool to understand the structure and phase
transitions [Osman et. al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2000, 104, 4433; 2002, 106, 653] in
alkylammonium micas. The consistent force field 91 is extended for accurate
simulation of mica and related minerals. We investigate mica sheets with 12
octadecyltrimethylammonium (C18) ions or 12 dioctadecyldimethylammonium (2C18)
ions, respectively, as single and layered structures at different temperatures
with periodicity in the xy plane by NVT dynamics. The alkylammonium ions reside
preferably above the cavities in the mica surface with an aluminum-rich
boundary. The nitrogen atoms are 380 to 390 pm distant to the superficial
silicon-aluminum plane. With increasing temperature, rearrangements of C18 ions
on the mica surface are found, while 2C18 ions remain tethered due to geometric
restraints. We present basal-plane spacings in the duplicate structures, tilt
angles of the alkyl chains, and gauche-trans ratios to analyze the chain
conformation. Also, the individual phase transitions of the two systems on
heating are explained. Where experimental data are available, the agreement is
very good. We propose a geometric parameter lamba for the saturation of the
surface with alkyl chains, which determines the preferred self-assembly
pattern, i.e., islands, intermediate, or continuous. Lambda also determines the
tilt angles in continuous layers on mica or other surfaces. The thermal

Development of an Organic Table Grape Production and Market in Switzerland
In Switzerland there is an increasing consumer demand for residue-free, organic table
grapes. The organic cultivation of table grapes, however, is very delicate in humid climates
and experience to advice organic growers is still lacking. The goal of our project that has
started in 2004 is to develop and establish a cultivation system for organic table grapes
under Swiss climatic and economic conditions with a high yield security and fulfilling the
high quality demands of the market. Preliminary results: Interesting cultivars to produce
are e.g. Fanny, Lilla, Palatina. However they are disease susceptible and must be
produced under a rain roof. Better suited cultivars still need to be found. Consumer
acceptance for organic table grapes produced in Switzerland is very positive. However
changes towards new cultivars and lower production costs are necessary. Spray programs
to achieve sufficient disease protection and no spray blotch seem to be realizable, mainly
for production under rain roof
The relationship between international humanitarian law and human rights law from the perspective of a human rights treaty body
The debate about the simultaneous applicability of international humanitarian law and human rights law also affects human rights treaty bodies. The article first considers the difficulty for a human rights body in determining whether international humanitarian law is applicable; second, it examines the problems in practice in applying the lex specialis doctrine and the question of derogation in this particular context. The author finally outlines the impact of the debate as to the extent of extraterritorial applicability of human rights law
Separation of quadrupolar and magnetic contributions to spin-lattice relaxation in the case of a single isotope
We present a NMR pulse double-irradiation method which allows one to separate
magnetic from quadrupolar contributions in the spin-lattice relaxation. The
pulse sequence fully saturates one transition while another is observed. In the
presence of a Delta m = 2 quadrupolar contribution, the intensity of the
observed line is altered compared to a standard spin-echo experiment. We
calculated analytically this intensity change for spins I=1, 3/2, 5/2, thus
providing a quantitative analysis of the experimental results. Since the pulse
sequence we used takes care of the absorbed radio-frequency power, no problems
due to heating arise. The method is especially suited when only one NMR
sensitive isotope is available. Different cross-checks were performed to prove
the reliability of the obtained results. The applicability of this method is
demonstrated by a study of the plane oxygen 17O (I = 5/2) in the
high-temperature superconductor YBa_2Cu_4O_8: the 17O spin-lattice relaxation
rate consists of magnetic as well as quadrupolar contributions.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Social Cultural Factors Influencing Appointment of Headteachers in Primary Schools in Eldoret East Sub-County, Kenya
Headteachers’ position is at the critical point of which all the mechanism of Education system: planning, delivery and management rest. The purpose of the study was to investigate social cultural factors influencing appointment of headteachers in primary schools in Eldoret East Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County. The target population comprised of 275 respondents who were: head teachers, deputy head teachers, members of appointment committee in the Sub-County Education office noted as the DEO, DQASO, QASOS, AEOS, DSO, DHRO and KNUT Executive official. The study used questionnaires and interview schedules as tools of data collection. Findings of the research showed that males dominate headship positions in primary schools in the sub county where even the constitutional threshold of 30% has not been attained. It was found out that female leadership is devalued the study area. Respondents indicated that stereotypes associated with social cultural factors had significant influence on the appointment of heads of schools in Eldoret East Sub County. Women teachers not given equal chances to apply for headship position due to cultural beliefs that the society has towards them. There is need for selection panels not to focus on socio-cultural issues that may affect women ascendancy to school leadership. The selection panels need to forego socio-cultural factors that may affect women teachers’ promotion to school headship. Keywords: social, cultural, factors, appointment and head teacher
Simulating evolutionary responses of an introgressed insect resistance trait for ecological effect assessment of transgene flow: a model for supporting informed decisionmaking in environmental risk assessment
Predicting outcomes of transgene flow from arable crops requires a system perspective that considers ecological and evolutionary processes within a landscape context. In Europe, the arable weed Raphanus raphanistrum is a potential hybridization partner of oilseed rape, and the two species are ecologically linked through the common herbivores Meligethes spp. Observations in Switzerland show that high densities of Meligethes beetles maintained by oilseed rape crops can lead to considerable damage on R. raphanistrum. We asked how increased insect resistance in R. raphanistrum – as might be acquired through introgression from transgenic oilseed rape – would affect seed production under natural herbivore pressure. In simulation experiments, plants protected against Meligethes beetles produced about twice as many seeds as unprotected plants. All stages in the development of reproductive structures from buds to pods were negatively affected by the herbivore, with the transition from buds to flowers being the most vulnerable. We conclude that resistance to Meligethes beetles could confer a considerable selective advantage upon R. raphanistrum in regions where oilseed rape is widely grown
