    Cardboard Genocide : board game design as a tool in Holocaust Education

    The paper is a report from a board game design workshop organized by a team of memory scholars, game scholars and Holocaust educators from Jagiellonian University in Kraków for a group of middle school students (age 15-16) from Radecznica, a small village in eastern Poland. The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness and facilitate reflection on local Holocaust histories through board game design. To that end, a two-day design event was organized and conducted, to help the students develop personal bonds with the local Holocaust history. Due to the workshop’s success, we believe the board game design proved to be an effective tool in the Holocaust education. The workshop results are discussed with regard to the Holocaust absence from game culture and considered in the context of the ongoing struggle to detaboo the involvement of ethnic Poles in the destruction of Jewish communities in Poland during the Second World War

    Photosystem II Functionality in Barley Responds Dynamically to Changes in Leaf Manganese Status

    A catalytic manganese (Mn) cluster is required for the oxidation of water in the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II (PSII) in plants. Despite this essential role of Mn in generating the electrons driving photosynthesis, limited information is available on how Mn deficiency affects PSII functionality. We have here used parameters derived from measurements of fluorescence induction kinetics (OJIP transients), non-photochemical quenching and PSII subunit composition to investigate how latent Mn deficiency changes the photochemistry in two barley genotypes differing in Mn efficiency. Mn deficiency caused dramatic reductions in the quantum yield of PSII and led to the appearance of two new inflection points, the K step and the D dip, in the OJIP fluorescence transients, indicating severe damage to the OEC. In addition, Mn deficiency decreased the ability to induce non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) in the light, rendering the plants incapable of dissipating excess energy in a controlled way. Thus, the Mn deficient plants became severely affected in their ability to recover from high light-induced photoinhibition, especially under strong Mn deficiency. Interestingly, the Mn-efficient genotype was able to maintain a higher non-photochemical quenching than the Mn-inefficient genotype when exposed to mild Mn deficiency. However, during severe Mn deficiency, there were no differences between the two genotypes, suggesting a general loss of the ability to disassemble and repair PSII. The pronounced defects of PSII activity were supported by a dramatic decrease in the abundance of the OEC protein subunits, PsbP and PsbQ in response to Mn deficiency for both genotypes. We conclude that regulation of photosynthetic performance by means of maintaining and inducing NPQ mechanisms contribute to genotypic differences in the Mn efficiency of barley genotypes growing under conditions with mild Mn deficiency

    Artykuł jest analizą nowego eksponatu w Aptece pod Orłem – oddziale Muzeum Historycznego Miasta Krakowa. Apteka znajduje się w Podgórzu, dzielnicy, na terenie której w czasie II wojny światowej znajdowało się getto żydowskie. Właściciel Apteki – Tadeusz Pankiewicz, był jedynym Polakiem, któremu pozwolono żyć w getcie podczas Holokaustu. Był świadkiem wydarzeń, a także starał się pomagać ludziom zmuszonym do życia w getcie. Apteka była miejscem spotkań, w którym mieszkańcy getta mogli zapomnieć o codziennych smutkach i traumie Holokaustu. Artykuł podzielony jest na trzy części. Pierwsza z nich to krótka historia dzielnicy. Druga odnosi się do innych miejsc dziedzictwa żydowskiego, które zostały odnowione w Podgórzu w ostatnim czasie, takich jak: Plac Bohaterów Getta, dawna Fabryka Schindlera oraz obóz Płaszów. Trzecia część to analiza nowego eksponatu w pomieszczeniach Apteki.The article is an analysis of the new exhibit in the Eagle Pharmacy – branch of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków. The Pharmacy is situated in Podgórze, district were was located Jewish getto during 2nd World War. The owner of the Pharmacy – Tadeusz Pankiewicz, was the only Pole who was allowed to live in ghetto while the Holocaust. He was the witness of the events and also he tried to help the people who were forced to live in the ghetto. The Pharmacy was a place of the meetings, where the inhabitants of the ghetto could forget about the everyday sorrows and trauma of the Holocaust. The article is divided into three parts. The first one is a short history of the district. The second refers to the other sites of Jewish heritage which were renovated in Podgórze lately such as: Ghetto Heroes’ Square, former Schindler’s Factory and camp Płaszów. The third part is analysis of the new exhibit in the rooms of the Pharmacy

    Artykuł ma na celu analizowanie przemian wizerunku Ireny Sendlerowej – Sprawiedliwej wśród Narodów Świata, działaczki Rady Pomocy Żydom „Żegota”. W pracy uwypuklone zostały dwa oblicza Sendlerowej: matczyne, takie, jakie zachowały w pamięci uratowane przez nią dzieci oraz heroiczne – wykreowane w przestrzeni publicznej po roku 2000. W artykule jej postać ukazana została na tle przemian w postrzeganiu relacji polsko-żydowskich w Polsce.The article aims to analyze the transformation of the image of Irena Sendlerowa - Righteous Among the Nations, activist of the Council for Help Jews „Żegota”. Two faces of Sendler were highlighted in the work - motherly, such as those saved by her saved children, and heroic - created in public space after 2000. In the article her character was shown against the background of changes in the perception of Polish-Jewish relations in Poland

    Remembrance Days in European Union – between oblivion, national manifestations and an European narrative?

    The tragic events of World War II play an important role in the collective memory of all European nations. Since 1945, many initiatives devoted to the coming-to-terms with the traumatic past have been launched. One of the challenges for actors involved in the creation of historical and educational policies is to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive. In the last years, a significant number of initiatives have been organized on the occasion of anniversaries. The paper presents an analysis of 3 different initiatives connected to the official ceremonies of three international remembrance days in Poland, Germany and France. These are the Holocaust Remembrance Day, the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the European Day of Remembrance for the Righteous. The selected countries represent different historical experiences of war and circumstances, in which the process of collective memory took place. The need for reconciliation between France and Germany was one of the basic reasons for European integration. The reconciliation process between Poland and Germany started much later and Poland joined EU just in 2004. These factors have had an important impact on the creation of the memory culture in those countries. The paper gives an indication on who is involved in commemoration activities and which factors are decisive for the question of whether at all and how the selected anniversaries are celebrated in the three chosen countries. It shows, in how far national goals regarding historical policy are still prevailing and in which places and occasions a more universal and international narrative has been developed.Tragiczne wydarzenia II wojny światowej odgrywają ważną rolę w zbiorowej pamięci wszystkich narodów Europy. Od 1945 r. powstało wiele inicjatyw poświęconych pogodzeniu się z traumatyczną przeszłością. Jednym z wyzwań dla aktorów zaangażowanych w tworzenie polityki historycznej i edukacyjnej jest podtrzymywanie żywej pamięci o Holokauście. W ostatnich latach z okazji rocznic zorganizowano wiele inicjatyw. Artykuł przedstawia analizę 3 różnych wydarzeń związanych z oficjalnymi obchodami trzech międzynarodowych dni pamięci w Polsce, Niemczech i Francji. Są to Dzień Pamięci o Holokauście, Międzynarodowy Dzień Pamięci o Holokauście oraz Europejski Dzień Pamięci o Sprawiedliwych. Wybrane kraje reprezentują różne doświadczenia historyczne wojny i okoliczności, w jakich przebiegał proces pamięci zbiorowej. Potrzeba pojednania między Francją a Niemcami była jedną z podstawowych przyczyn integracji europejskiej. Proces pojednania między Polską a Niemcami rozpoczął się znacznie później, a Polska weszła do UE dopiero w 2004 roku. Czynniki te miały istotny wpływ na tworzenie się kultury pamięci w tych krajach. Artykuł zwraca uwagę na to, kto jest zaangażowany w działania upamiętniające i jakie czynniki decydują o tym, czy w ogóle i w jaki sposób obchodzone są wybrane rocznice w trzech wymienionych krajach. Pokazuje, w jakim stopniu nadal przeważają narodowe cele polityki historycznej oraz w jakich miejscach i okolicznościach wykształciła się bardziej uniwersalna i międzynarodowa narracja
