The TechniCom Challenge: Low Fidelity Simulation with High Yield Potential

Participants work in teams of two. One member of the team serves as the “communicator”, the other serves as the “surgeon”. The “communicator” is given a picture of the design and instructs the surgeon how to use the materials inside the box trainer to replicate the design. The “communicator” cannot look inside the box trainer nor share with the “surgeon” the picture of the design. Several designs may be incorporated into the exercise. Pairs are given a maximum time of five minutes to complete each design. A debriefing is conducted to discuss the challenges in completing the simulation

Noah\u27s Consonants

The title refers to he of the Ark as distinct from he of the dictionary. Noah\u27s Ark is a honeymoon haven for words because Noah only admits those words in which each consonant has a partner. In practice he\u27s even more picky, refusing entry to any such words with less than 3 different consonants (6 consonants in total). He also turns away hyphenated examples, phrases, coinages, palindromes, tautonyms and pair isograms. Here, we attempt to discover some of those words which have made it past Noah into the Ark

The Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE): A qualitative study exploring the healthcare student’s experience

The paper relates to delivering vocational higher education to prospective building surveyors. Preparing students for the workplace requires inclusion of academic knowledge, workplace skills and practical vocational experience. This is reinforced by feedback from the four stakeholders to surveying education, learner, employer, education provider and professional institution. Successful delivery of learning to distinct vocational groups requires specific pedagogy. The paper analyses a realistic industrial simulation delivered to teach knowledge and skills to undergraduate building surveying students. Initial pedagogy was proposed by CEEBL, Centre for Excellence in Enquiry Based Learning. Work based skills requirements were taken from published work including leading building surveying academics and practitioners like Professor Mike Hoxley and Professor Malcolm Hollis. Data analysis is used to evolve future simulations. These become better suited to delivering appropriate learning, valid assessment and usable vocational skills, against academic, student focused and industrial criteria. An action research approach is utilised by the author to develop specialist pedagogy through analysis of outcome data and stakeholder feedback. Action research is undertaken through an approach using trial, evaluation and development. The paper concludes, simulation can be a valid tool for delivering teaching, learning, assessment and vocational skills training to surveying students and justifies further research

Sexuality and the Aging Adult: The Attitude and Practice of Physicians and Nurse Practitioners

Background: As the population ages, many quality of life issues will generate discussion. One such issue is sexuality of the aging adult. While there is substantial documentation related to the physiology and desires of the aging adult, little is known about medical practitioners\u27 beliefs and practices regarding sexuality. Method: A 14 question survey with a comment section was developed and mailed to 269 physicians and nurse practitioners in Santa Clara County, California. The responses were evaluated using descriptive statistics. The comments received were grouped related to intent or topic. Results: There was no discernible difference between the beliefs and practices of physicians and nurse practitioners. The responses to the questions that concerned beliefs were very homogenous indicating that practitioners believe sexuality is important across the life span and that the natural and physiological changes that occur do cause concern for aging patients. In addition, there was agreement related to treatment options for sexual dysfunction. While most indicated there are adequate treatment options for men, few felt there were for women. The number of practitioners that indicated they include questions related to sexuality as a part of the initial history and physical were substantially more than was described in the literature. Conclusions: This study confirms that practitioners regard sexuality as an important aspect of an aging adult\u27s life. More research is needed about treatment options for women, as well as additional investigation regarding the number of practitioners who actually inquire about sexual concerns during the initial intake of the aged adult
