    Effect of Multiple Alloying Elements on the Glass-Forming Ability, Thermal Stability, and Crystallization Behavior of Zr-Based Alloys

    Effect of multiple alloying elements on the glass-forming ability, thermal stability, and crystallization behavior of Zr-based glass-forming alloys were studied in the present work. We investigated the effect of complete or partial substitution of Ti and Ni with similar early and late transition metals, respectively, on the glass-forming ability and crystallization behavior of the Zr50Ti10Cu20Ni10Al10 alloy. Poor correlation was observed between different parameters indicating the glass-forming ability and the critical size of the obtained glassy samples. Importance of the width of the crystallization interval is emphasized. The kinetics of primary crystallization, i.e., the rate of nucleation and rate of growth of the nuclei of primary crystals is very different from that of the eutectic alloys. Thus, it is difficult to estimate the glass-forming ability only on the basis of the empirical parameters not taking into account the crystallization behavior and the crystallization interval

    Investigation on the effects of milling atmosphere on synthesis of barium ferrite/magnetite nanocomposite

    In this research, barium ferrite /magnetite nanocomposites synthesized via a mechano-chemical route. Graphite was used in order to reduce hematite content of barium ferrite to magnetite to produce a magnetic nanocomposite. The effects of processing conditions on the powder characteristics were investigated by XRD, VSM, and HRTEM techniques. XRD results revealed that milling under air and argon atmospheres resulted in the appearance of Fe3O4 peaks beside BaFe12O19 peaks after 15 and 20 hrs milling, respectively. The intensity of Fe3O4 peaks in the XRD patterns increased by increasing the milling time. VSM studies revealed that saturation magnetization of the 40-hrs milled samples under air and argon atmospheres was 31.25 and 36.42 emu/g, respectively. This difference might be due to more Fe3O4 content in the latter sample. By annealing of the 40-hrs milled sample in air, saturation magnetization increased to 139.12 emu/g.Nanostructured MaterialsApplied Science

    Microstructures and Stabilization Mechanisms of Nanocrystalline Iron-Chromium Alloys with Hafnium Addition

    The low thermal stability of nanocrystalline metals severely limits their applications at high temperatures. In this study, we investigate the nanocrystalline stabilization mechanisms for Fe-14Cr alloys with 1, 2, and 4 at. pct Hf addition at 1173 K (900 °C). Microstructural characterizations using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy reveal high density of HfO2 nanoparticles with sizes of ~4 nm dispersed throughout the ferritic matrix. This indicates that kinetic stabilization by HfO2 nanoparticle pinning is primarily responsible for the observed high thermal stability. In addition, some Hf and Cr segregation on grain boundaries is observed in the Fe-14Cr-4Hf, suggesting the existence of thermodynamic stabilization at high Hf content. Second-phase precipitations such as hafnium carbide, M23C6, and Fe-Cr-Hf intermetallic phase are also found in the Fe-14Cr-4Hf, but their large sizes and inter-spacing suggest that their contribution to stabilization is minimal

    Crude extracts of fruits, herbs, vegetables, cereals and other plant materials rich in phenolics and antioxidant activity are of prime interest to the food industry because of their ability to retard oxidative degradation of lipids and hence improve the quality and nutritional value of functional food. Concomitantly, the importance of antioxidant constituents of plant materials in the maintenance of health and protection from coronary heart disease and cancer is also raising interest among scientists, food manufacturers and consumers as part of the current trend towards the use of herbal medicine. In addition, the use of complementary alternative medicine (CAM) by patients suffering from chronic disorders, such as cancers, heart, stroke and immune disorders has been well documented. CAMs are either used on their own (alternative treatments) or in addition to conventional medicine (complementary treatments).
