    The Development of Science Domain Based Learning Media Tool Which is Integrated with Local Wisdom to Improve Science Process Skill and Scientific Attitude

    This research was conducted to : (1) improve the science domain based learning media which is integrated with appropriate local potention for Science learning material “Object Change Around Us” for students grade VII of Junior High School, (2) know the effectiveness of science based learning media which is integrated with developed local potention to improve science process skill and scientific attitude of students grade VII of Junior High School. This research was a research and development which adapt 4D Thiagarajan model which include four steps, they were: (1) define, (2) design, (3) develop, and (4) disseminate and Borg & Gall development model which was done into 7 steps, they were: (1) research and information collecting, (2) planning, (3) developing preliminarry form of product, (4) preliminary field testing, (5) main product revision, (6) main field testing, and (7) operational product revision. The research result showed thet the science domain based learning media which was integrated with developed local potention were: (1) appropriate to be used for science learning material “Object Change around us” for students grade VII of JHS, (2) effective to improve science process skill and scientific attitude of students grade VII of JHS

    Correlation Between Serum Albumin Level and Degree of Esophageal Varices in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis

    Background: It has not been clear about how often the patient should have esophago- gastroduodenoscopy (EGD) screening for esophageal varices (EV) detection and there is only some data that demonstrates the correlation between the degree of EV and non-endoscopic variables. It is assumed that the presence of EV detected though examination of serum albumin level may trim down the unnecessary endoscopy. This study was aimed to recognize the correlation between albumin level and the degree of EV in patients with liver cirrhosis. Method: A retrospective analysis was performed for 61 patients with liver cirrhosis who had EGD at Sanglah hospital between January and December 2008. Spearman test was used to analyze the correlation between albumin level and the degree of EV. Results: There were 61 patients of 45 (73.8%) male and 16 (26.2%) female. The range age of patients was 13–77 years (average 49.98 ± 1.62 years). Serum albumin level ranged between 1.10-3.60 mg/dL, the average value was 2.21 ± 0.451 mg/dL. We also found 8 (13.1%) patients without EV, 14 (23.0%) patients with EV grade I, 21 (34.4%) patients with grade II and 18 (29.5%) patients with grade III. A negative correlation was found between serum albumin level and the degree of EV (r = - 0.587; p = 0.000, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Serum albumin level can predict the presence and the degree of EV in patients with liver cirrhosis

    Age and Alarm Symptoms Predict Upper Gastrointestinal Malignancy Among Patients with Dyspepsia

    Background: Upper gastrointestinal (UGI) Malignancy is one of the major causes of cancer related death. Endoscopy in dyspeptic patients above 45 years, or those with alarm symptoms may detect this condition. There were only limited data in Indonesia about age and alarm symptoms to predict UGI Malignancy. This study was aimed to determine the prevalence of UGI Malignancy among dyspepsia patients and to develop a simple clinical prediction model.Method: A cross-sectional study to 390 patients with dyspepsia underwent endoscopy in Endoscopy Unit of Sanglah Hospital Denpasar between July 2012 and June 2013 was conducted. Demography and alarm symptoms were documented. Chi-square and logistic regression test analysis were conducted to analyze variables associated with UGI Malignancy.Results: Twenty (5.13%) of 390 patients with dyspepsia had UGI Malignancy. Of the 20 patients, 65% were gastric cancer and 30% were esophageal cancer. The mean age was 59 ± 12 years. Variables associated with UGI Malignancy were weight loss (OR = 8.2), dysphagia (OR = 6.2), age > 45 years old (OR = 5.6), gastrointestinal bleeding (OR = 5.5), persistent vomiting (OR = 5.4), and anemia (OR = 4.9). Using a simplified rule of age >45 years and the presence of any alarm symptom, sensitivity was 85% and specificity was 67.57%.Conclusions: UGI Malignancy was found in 5.13% of patients with dyspepsia who underwent endoscopy. Simple clinical prediction model states that age above 45 years and alarm symptoms may be used as a screening tool to predict UGI Malignancy

    Constructing Balinese Analogy and Proverb Based on Biological Phenomena: the Initiative of Balinese Biodiversity Documentation

    The nature is real teacher for a person who wish to develop their intelligence. Intelli­gence is a natural quality of live. The universe intelligence are hidden everywhere, and if we have eyes to see, we can see it everywhere. We can learn from animals on how they sleep, they live and their interaction each others. Most people in every traditional culture learn based on their beliefs rather than their reason (Suryadarma, 2012). There are many different ways to look the uniqueness of biodiversity and the interrelationship between humans and their social and biophysical surroundings. People in the past; i.e. hunting and gathering communities were heavily depended on their immediate natural resources to meet most of their basic needs. Therefore, they closely interacted with their environment and thereby, gained a sound knowledge and understand­ing the uniqueness of each species and its underlying ecological processes. Many events in daily life is interesting, in the sense that many phenomena and objects can be directly ob­served. The richness of biological pehenomena in the ecosystems can be directly observed. Some phenomena had recorded as a proverbs, analogy and song. Balinese use the uniqueness of biodiversity resources and ecological phenomena in their daily life to find analogy, proverb and song to reflect their life. Yesudian (1989) declared; that man is the culminating point of the creation but in the man alone are animal, human and divine qualities alive and active together. Which aspects of our nature are to manifest? To manifest the humanity is the purpose of our earthly life (Suryadarma, 2010). This is the rea­son why the Balinese use proverbs, analogy, and song as part of learning process. Learning is processes of our escalation where it processes e.g. it can be analogized with the process of transformation on butterfly life cycle Tsunami is a large ocean waves that washes everything in the shallow water of a shore­line where globalization can be analogized with tsunami process in which the world increas­ingly their activities. Globalization is the fact where the people have been two ways in look­ing at it impact on their life activities. It is the reason why each person use different ways looking of proverbs, analogy in our cultural activities. How develop its in deferent level and different site into better science for better life? How to explore and develop it as sources of biodiversity documentation information because these activities will be developed the fra­grance of ecological wisdom and enter in every one heart

    The Effect of Science Learning Integrated with Local Potential of Wood Carving and Pottery Towards the Junior High School Students' Critical Thinking Skills

    This study aims to analyze the influence of science learning integrated with the local potential of wood carving and pottery to the critical thinking skill of class VIII SMP students. This research is a quasi-experimental research (quasi-experiment). The research design uses pretest-posttest control group design. The population in this study is the students of class VIII MTs Negeri Piyungan, while the sample is the students of class VIII A and VIII B MTs Negeri Piyungan. The technique of collecting data in this research is in the form of test. The data collection instrument is a critical thinking skill descriptive test. The data were analyzed using ANOVA test. The results of this study indicate that the learning of science integrated with the local potency of wood carving and pottery have an effect on critical thinking skill of class VIII SMP student. This effect is indicated by a significance of 0.008 (significance &lt;0.05).</p
