    Critical discourses in the culture-public relations relationship

    In this essay, we problematise some of the foundations of the culture-public relations relationship and then consider what insights and challenges may be gleaned for the discipline, research, and education. We employ the concept of discourse as a heuristic to aid insight into how culture and public relations intertwine in a dynamic, socially constructed process of meaning making. In identifying two prevalent discourses which inform thinking and writing about culture, we note how these highlight the complexity of the public relations-culture interaction, an aspect often under-estimated in research. We offer some final, tentative ideas concerning both the teaching of public relations and the doing of public relations research

    Keck Spectroscopy of Two Young Globular Clusters in the Merger Remnant NGC 3921

    Low-resolution UV-to-visual spectra of two candidate globular clusters in the merger remnant NGC 3921 are presented. These two clusters of apparent magnitude V = 22.2 (Mv = -12.5) lie at projected distances of ~5 kpc from the center and move with halo-type radial velocities relative to the local galaxy background. Their spectra show strong Balmer absorption lines indicative of main-sequence turnoffs dominated by A-type stars. Comparisons with model-cluster spectra computed by Bruzual & Charlot and others yield cluster ages in the range of 200-530 Myr, and metallicities about solar to within a factor of three. Given their small half-light radii (Reff < 5 pc) and ages corresponding to ~100 core- crossing times, these clusters are gravitationally bound and, hence, indeed young globulars. Assuming that they had Chabrier-type initial mass functions, their estimated current masses are 2.3(+-0.1)x10^6 Msun and 1.5(+-0.1)x10^6 Msun, respectively, or roughly half the mass of omegaCen. Since NGC 3921 itself shows many signs of being a 0.7(+-0.3) Gyr old protoelliptical, these two young globulars of roughly solar metallicity and their many counterparts observed with the Hubble Space Telescope provide supporting evidence that, in the process of forming elliptical-like remnants, major mergers of gas-rich disks can also increase the number of metal-rich globular clusters.     Final surgical interventions in primary total knee arthroplasty infections : a retrospective

    Poster presented at the 2017 Health Sciences Research Day which was organized and sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Medicine Research Council and held on November 9, 2017.Conclusions: Two stage revision is largely regard as the gold standard for treatment of chronic PJI in primary TKA. Follow-up for these patients who continue to be at risk for infection related failure over an extended period of time frequently did not return to the institution where their infection management was started. Our retrospective study identified that subset (23.8%) of those undergoing two-stage intervention and who had returned for follow-up were never reimplanted. Only half of those reimplanted retain those components over a 31 month follow up from the time of their initial intervention. These results give a more guarded prognosis for the outcome of patients with prosthetic joint replacement than what has been traditionally reported in the literature. The more challenging prognosis may be impacted by host comorbidities, antibiotic susceptibility of infecting organisms, timing to surgical treatment, or other factors

    Linewidths in bound state resonances for helium scattering from Si(111)-(1x1)H

    Helium-3 spin-echo measurements of resonant scattering from the Si(111)–(1 × 1)H surface, in the energy range 4–14 meV, are presented. The measurements have high energy resolution yet they reveal bound state resonance features with uniformly broad linewidths. We show that exact quantum mechanical calculations of the elastic scattering, using the existing potential for the helium/Si(111)–(1 × 1)H interaction, cannot reproduce the linewidths seen in the experiment. Further calculations rule out inelastic and other mechanisms that might give rise to losses from the elastic scattering channels. We show that corrugation in the attractive part of the atom–surface potential is the most likely origin of the experimental lineshapes

    NGC 770: A Counter-Rotating Core in a Low-Luminosity Elliptical Galaxy

    We present evidence for a counter-rotating core in the low-luminosity (M_B = -18.2) elliptical galaxy NGC 770 based on internal stellar kinematic data. This counter-rotating core is unusual as NGC 770 is not the primary galaxy in the region and it lies in an environment with evidence of on-going tidal interactions. We discovered the counter-rotating core via single-slit Keck/ESI echelle spectroscopy; subsequent integral field spectroscopy was obtained with the Gemini/GMOS IFU. The counter-rotating region has a peak rotation velocity of 21 km/s as compared to the main galaxy's rotation speed of greater than 45 km/s in the opposite direction. The counter-rotating region extends to a radius of 4'' (0.6 kpc), slightly smaller than the half-light radius of the galaxy which is 5.3'' (0.8 kpc) and is confined to a disk whose scale height is less than 0.8'' (0.1 kpc). We compute an age and metallicity of the inner counter-rotating region of 3 +/- 0.5 Gyr and [Fe/H] = 0.2 +/- 0.2 dex, based on Lick absorption-line indices. The lack of other large galaxies in this region limits possible scenarios for the formation of the counter-rotating core. We discuss several scenarios and favor one in which NGC 770 accreted a small gas-rich dwarf galaxy during a very minor merging event. If this scenario is correct, it represents one of the few known examples of merging between two dwarf-sized galaxies.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures. Accepted to AJ.     The results of electron spin resonance investigations of bulk Cd1-xMnx ΀ e and of molecular beam epitaxy grown CdTe/CdMnTe single 2 ”m thick layer and multi quantum well with Mn concentrations of about x = 0.10 are compared. The Mn 2+ electron spin resonance spectrum of the MQW CdTe/CdMnTe shows severalfeatures different from those observed in the CdMnTe bulk sample.The Mn2+ resonance shows a small anisotropy of position and widthwith the anisotropy axis normal to the heterointerface. Tle temperature dependence of the width of the electron spin resonance line is also different from that observed for the bulk and for the thick single layer

Simultaneously, the Fertilizer Recommendation System leverages soil quality data and environmental factors to provide personalized fertilizer recommendations, optimizing nutrient application. An essential element of this system is a robust soil testing module, recognizing the critical importance of assessing soil quality. Soil fertility evaluation, guided by soil pH measurements, enables precise crop predictions. The proposed system utilizes Machine Learning classification algorithms to predict suitable crops based on essential soil parameters—Phosphorus, Potassium, and Nitrogen levels. It also offers tailored fertilizer recommendations to enhance soil fertility. By implementing these interconnected solutions, this research aims to significantly improve crop yields while reducing crop damage.     The idea of rejection originated by Aristotle. The notion of rejection was introduced into formal logic by Ɓukasiewicz [20]. He applied it to complete syntactic characterization of deductive systems using an axiomatic method of rejection of propositions [22, 23]. The paper gives not only genesis, but also development and generalization of the notion of rejection. It also emphasizes the methodological approach to biaspectual axiomatic method of characterization of deductive systems as acceptance (asserted) systems and rejection (refutation) systems, introduced by Ɓukasiewicz and developed by his student SƂupecki, the pioneers of the method, which becomes relevant in modern approaches to logic

    An ellipsoidal mirror for focusing neutral atomic and molecular beams

    Manipulation of atomic and molecular beams is essential to atom optics applications including atom lasers, atom lithography, atom interferometry and neutral atom microscopy. The manipulation of charge-neutral beams of limited polarizability, spin or excitation states remains problematic, but may be overcome by the development of novel diffractive or reflective optical elements. In this paper, we present the first experimental demonstration of atom focusing using an ellipsoidal mirror. The ellipsoidal mirror enables stigmatic off-axis focusing for the first time and we demonstrate focusing of a beam of neutral, ground-state helium atoms down to an approximately circular spot, (26.8±0.5) ÎŒm×(31.4±0.8) ÎŒm in size. The spot area is two orders of magnitude smaller than previous reflective focusing of atomic beams and is a critical milestone towards the construction of a high-intensity scanning helium microscope
