Stress, alcohol and infection during early development: a brief review of common outcomes and mechanisms.

Although stress is an adaptive physiological response to deal with adverse conditions, its occurrence during the early stages of life, such as infancy or adolescence, can induce adaptations in multiple physiological systems, including the reproductive axis, the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal (HPA) axis, the limbic cortex and the immune system. These early changes have consequences in adult life, as seen in the physiological and behavioural responses to stress. This review highlights the impact of several stress challenges incurred at various stages of development (perinatal, juvenile, adolescent periods) and how the developmental timing of early‐life stress confers unique physiological adaptations that may persist across the lifespan. In doing so, we emphasise how intrinsic sex differences in the stress response might contribute to sex‐specific vulnerabilities, the molecular processes underlying stress in the adult, and potential therapeutic interventions to mitigate the effects of early stage stress, including the novel molecular mechanism of SUMOylation as a possible key target of HPA regulation during early‐life stress.Fil: Surkin, Pablo Nicolas.

Observations Rents that take an ever larger chunk out of the household budget In the Brussels Capital Region a majority (54%) of renters spend from 41% to 65% (for the poorest) of their household budget on housing, while one-fourth (of the overall budget) is commonly seen as the admissible limit. And the situation is growing worse, seeing that 30% of Brussels’ poorest residents (three last deciles) now have access to a mere 4% of the rental market (i.e. costing only 25% of the household inco..

Participation of TRPV1 in the activity of the GnRH system in male rats

    Get PDF
GnRH neuron activity is under the influence of multiple stimuli, including those coming from the endocannabinoid and the immune systems. Since it has been previously suggested that some of the main elements controlling the GnRH pulse generator possess the TRPV1 receptor, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the participation of the hypothalamic TRPV1, through its pharmacological blockade, in the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis in male rats under basal or acute inflammatory conditions. Our hypothesis was based on the idea that the hypothalamic TRPV1 participates in the synthesis of the main neuromodulatory signals controlling GnRH, and therefore the reproductive axis. Our results showed that the hypothalamic TRPV1 blockade induced pro-inflammatory effects by increasing Tnfα and Il-1β mRNA Hypothalamic levels, and inhibited the reproductive axis by affecting Gnrh, Kiss1 and Rfrp3 mRNA levels and decreasing plasma levels of luteinizing hormone and testosterone under basal conditions, without significant additive effects in rats exposed to systemic LPS. Altogether, these results suggest that the hypothalamic TRPV1 receptor participates in the regulation of the GnRH system, probably by modulating immune-dependent mechanisms.Fil: Surkin, Pablo Nicolas. A case of bilateral submandibular gland mucoceles in a 16-month-old child

    Get PDF
Mucoceles are common benign cystic lesions of the oral cavity that develop following extravasation or retention of mucous material from the major or minor salivary glands. Mucoceles are usually located in the lower lip (60 to 70% of cases), and the floor of the mouth is only involved in 6 to 15% of cases. Submandibular gland mucocele is extremely rare but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of swelling at the submandibular triangle in young children. We present the rare case of a 16-month-old child who was diagnosed with bilateral submandibular gland mucocele, presenting as serial swellings in both submandibular regions. We removed the cystic mass with the submandibular and sublingual glands to prevent recurrence
