Topical Application of Chrysanthemum indicum L. Attenuates the Development of Atopic Dermatitis-Like Skin Lesions by Suppressing Serum IgE Levels, IFN-γ, and IL-4 in Nc/Nga Mice
Chrysanthemum indicum L. (CIL) is widely used as an anti-inflammatory agent in Asia and our preliminary study revealed that CIL reduced interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13 in 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-treated HaCaT cells, a human keratinocyte cell line. We investigated the atopic dermatitis (AD) effect of topically applied CIL in mice with AD-like symptoms. After topical application of 1,3-butylen glycol (control), CIL-Low (5%), CIL-High (30%), or 0.1% hydrocortisone (HC) on the AD-like skin lesions in DNCB-treated NC/Nga mice for 5 weeks, the ear thickness, mast cell infiltration, and serum immunoglobulin E (IgE), IgG1, IL-4 and interferon (IFN)-γ were measured. The gene expressions of IL-4, IL-13, and IFN-γ in the dorsal skin were assayed. CIL treatment dosedependently reduced severity of clinical symptoms of dorsal skin, ear thickness, and the number of mast cells and eosinophils. CIL-High significantly decreased serum IgE, IgG1, IL-4, and IFN-γ levels and reduced mRNA levels of IFN-γ, IL-4, and IL-13 in dorsal skin lesion. The improvement by CIL-High was similar to HC, but without its adverse effects such as skin atrophy maceration, and secondary infection. In conclusion, CIL may be an effective alternative substance for the management of AD

A Data-Driven Approach to Identify the Predictors of Perceived Health Status Among Chinese and Korean Americans.
Asian Americans are the countrys fastest-growing racial group, and several studies have focused on the health outcomes of Asian Americans, including perceived health status. Perceived health status provides a summarized view of the health of populations for diverse domains, such as the psychological, social, and behavioral aspects. Given its multifaceted nature, perceived health status should be carefully approached when examining any variables influence because it results from interactions among many variables. A data-driven approach using machine learning provides an effective way to discover new insights when there are complex interactions among multiple variables. To date, there are not many studies available that use machine learning to examine the effects of diverse variables on the perceived health status of Chinese and Korean Americans. This study aims to develop and evaluate three prediction models using logistic regression, random forest, and support vector machines to find the predictors of perceived health status among Chinese and Korean Americans from survey data. The prediction models identified specific predictors of perceived health status. These predictors can be utilized when planning for effective interventions for the better health outcomes of Chinese and Korean Americans
Bayesian Approach to Linear Bayesian Networks
This study proposes the first Bayesian approach for learning high-dimensional
linear Bayesian networks. The proposed approach iteratively estimates each
element of the topological ordering from backward and its parent using the
inverse of a partial covariance matrix. The proposed method successfully
recovers the underlying structure when Bayesian regularization for the inverse
covariance matrix with unequal shrinkage is applied. Specifically, it shows
that the number of samples and are sufficient for the proposed algorithm to learn linear Bayesian
networks with sub-Gaussian and 4m-th bounded-moment error distributions,
respectively, where is the number of nodes and is the maximum degree
of the moralized graph. The theoretical findings are supported by extensive
simulation studies including real data analysis. Furthermore the proposed
method is demonstrated to outperform state-of-the-art frequentist approaches,
such as the BHLSM, LISTEN, and TD algorithms in synthetic data
Evaluation of tropospheric ozone reanalyses with independent ozonesonde observations in East Asia
The modern reanalysis datasets provide not only meteorological variables, but also atmospheric chemical compositions such as tropospheric ozone and aerosol concentration. However, the quality of chemical compositions has been rarely assessed especially over East Asia. To better understand the characteristics of reanalysis datasets on regional scale, the present study evaluates tropospheric ozone derived from seven reanalyses against five independent ozonesonde observations in East Asia. The reanalysis datasets are the ECMWF Reanalysis 5th (ERA5), Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate reanalysis (MACCRA), Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service reanalysis (CAMSRA), as well as the NCEP Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR), NASA Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA2), Japanese 55-year Reanalysis (JRA-55), and updated Tropospheric Chemistry Reanalysis (TCR-2). It turns out that MACCRA, CAMSRA, and TCR-2, which incorporate chemical transport model, depict most reasonable spatio-temporal variability of tropospheric ozone in East Asia. The MACC exhibits a better quality with relatively small mean biases of 6.4 +/- 1.3% in tropospheric column ozone than biases of 7.8 +/- 2.7% and 7.8 +/- 2.8% for CAMSRA and TCR-2. The CAMSRA further shows a significant monthly correlation with the observation of up to 0.7 at 850 hPa. Among the seven reanalyses, MACC, CAMSRA, and TCR-2 are suitable for local tropospheric ozone study on seasonal to inter-annual time scales. However, none of the seven reanalysis datasets reproduce the observed trend of tropospheric ozone. This result suggests that even the latest datasets are inadequate for the long-term ozone change study
Prunus mume
We investigated the antiobesity and hypoglycemic properties of Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc (PMA; Japanese apricot) and Lithospermum erythrorhizon Sieb. et Zucc (LES; gromwell) extracts in ovariectomized (OVX) rats that impaired energy and glucose homeostasis. OVX rats consumed either 5% dextrose, 5% PMA extract, 5% LES extract, or 2.5% PMA+2.5% LES extract in the high fat diet. After 8 weeks of treatment, PMA+LES prevented weight gain and visceral fat accumulation in OVX rats by lowering daily food intake and increasing energy expenditure and fat oxidation. PMA+LES prevented the attenuation of leptin and insulin signaling by increasing the expression of leptin receptor in the hypothalamus in OVX rats. PMA+LES significantly reversed the decrease of energy expenditure in OVX rats by increasing expression of UCP-1 in the brown adipose tissues and UCP-2 and UCP-3 in the quadriceps muscles. PMA+LES also increased CPT-1 expression and decreased FAS, ACC, and SREBP-1c in the liver and quadriceps muscles to result in reducing triglyceride accumulation. PMA+LES improved insulin sensitivity in OVX rats. In conclusion, PMA+LES synergistically prevented the impairment of energy, lipid, and glucose metabolism by OVX through potentiating hypothalamic leptin and insulin signaling. PMA+LES may be a useful intervention for alleviating the symptoms of menopause in women
Controlling Ferromagnetic Easy Axis in a Layered MoS2 Single Crystal
We report the effective methods to induce weak ferromagnetism in pristine MoS2 persisting up to room temperature with the improved transport property, which would lead to new spintronics devices. The hydrogenation of MoS2 by heating at 300 degrees C for 1 h leads to the easy axis out of plane, while the irradiation of proton with a dose of 1 x 10(13) P/cm(2) leads to the easy axis in plane. The theoretical modeling supports such magnetic easy axes.open16
