No Open Cluster in the Ruprecht 93 Region
UBVI CCD photometry has been obtained for the Ruprecht 93 (Ru 93) region. We
were unable to confirm the existence of an intermediate-age open cluster in Ru
93 from the spatial distribution of blue stars. On the other hand, we found two
young star groups in the observed field: the nearer one (Ru 93 group) comprises
the field young stars in the Sgr-Car arm at d ~ 2.1 kpc, while the farther one
(WR 37 group) is the young stars around WR 37 at d ~ 4.8 kpc. We have derived
an abnormal extinction law (Rv = 3.5) in the Ruprecht 93 region.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, JKAS 2010, in press (Aug issue
UBVI CCD Photometry of the Open Cluster NGC 4609 and Hogg 15
UBVI CCD photometry is obtained for the open clusters NGC 4609 and Hogg 15 in
Crux. For NGC 4609, CCD data are presented for the first time. From new
photometry we derive the reddening, distance modulus and age of each cluster -
NGC 4609 : E(B-V) = 0.37 +/- 0.03, V_0 - M_V = 10.60 +/- 0.08, log tau = 7.7
+/- 0.1; Hogg 15 : E(B-V) = 1.13 +/- 0.11, V_0 - M_V = 12.50 +/- 0.15, log tau
<= 6.6. The young age of Hogg 15 strongly implies that WR 47 is a member of the
cluster. We have also determined the mass function of these clusters and have
obtained a normal slope (Gamma = -1.2 +/- 0.3) for NGC 4609 and a somewhat

On using gait to enhance frontal face extraction
Visual surveillance finds increasing deployment formonitoring urban environments. Operators need to be able to determine identity from surveillance images and often use face recognition for this purpose. In surveillance environments, it is necessary to handle pose variation of the human head, low frame rate, and low resolution input images. We describe the first use of gait to enable face acquisition and recognition, by analysis of 3-D head motion and gait trajectory, with super-resolution analysis. We use region- and distance-based refinement of head pose estimation. We develop a direct mapping to relate the 2-D image with a 3-D model. In gait trajectory analysis, we model the looming effect so as to obtain the correct face region. Based on head position and the gait trajectory, we can reconstruct high-quality frontal face images which are demonstrated to be suitable for face recognition. The contributions of this research include the construction of a 3-D model for pose estimation from planar imagery and the first use of gait information to enhance the face extraction process allowing for deployment in surveillance scenario

An exploratory study on the links between individual upcycling, product attachment and product longevity
Product attachment, the emotional bond experienced with a product, is an emerging concept for sustainable production and consumption. The logic behind it is that when people are attached to any product, they are more likely to handle the product with care and to postpone its replacement or disposal. Some types of product have been studied regarding product attachment in past research but the focus has been on the perspectives of professional designers and manufacturers rather than on consumers’ ‘everyday creativity’ activities such as ‘individual upcycling’. Individual upcycling, creation out of used materials resulting in a higher quality or value product than the compositional elements, is particularly relevant to product attachment. This is because upcycling, as a creative, participatory user activity, may offer the experiences of self-expression, group affiliation, special memories and pleasure, all of which are possible product attachment determinants
